For a used buyer in India, the practical risk is buying a particular car with neglected electronics, incomplete maintenance, accident damage, worn suspension, or unclear warranty status. Inspect the exact model year, trim, engine, transmission and VIN rather than treating every Hector listing as identical.
Cars24’s used-car guide identifies owner-reported electronics concerns and recommends testing the infotainment and connected functions, but it provides no incidence rate. That makes a careful inspection and documentary checks more useful than a generic list of alleged “common failures.”

What “common problems” means for a used Hector
The available evidence supports a buyer checklist, not a model-wide reliability ranking. Electronics are specifically flagged in a used-car guide, while checks for tyres, suspension, clutch, steering, air-conditioning, rattles and accident damage are sensible used-car inspections rather than proof of Hector-specific defects. An abnormal symptom should trigger a professional diagnosis; it is not, by itself, a confirmed fault.

Condition varies substantially with year, trim, mileage, fuel type, transmission, climate, driving route and maintenance history. A low-mileage car with poor repairs can be riskier than a higher-mileage example with complete invoices and regular servicing.

Inspect these systems before paying a deposit
Infotainment and connected electronics
With the engine running, operate the touchscreen through several menus and confirm that it responds consistently. Pair a phone, place a call, play audio, test voice commands and check navigation where fitted. Select reverse and verify that the camera image appears promptly and remains clear. Test every parking sensor individually by approaching an obstacle slowly in a safe area.
Check mobile-connected features and over-the-air functions where the particular year and trim support them. A restart, frozen screen, intermittent camera or sensor that works only after repeated attempts should be recorded and diagnosed before purchase. Do not assume a replacement screen will cure a communication, wiring or control-module fault.
Only versions equipped with driver-assistance systems should be tested for those functions. Confirm that warning lights disappear after start-up and that the vehicle’s menus identify the installed equipment; trim names alone are not a reliable guide across all years.
Service history and repeated repairs
Ask for a complete service history, preferably with invoices from an MG workshop or other documented specialist. Look for repeated descriptions such as the same warning light, camera failure, battery replacement, clutch work or suspension noise. An isolated repair is not automatically a reason to reject a car, but recurring work without a clear permanent fix deserves a specialist inspection.

Compare recorded mileage with tyre age, pedal and steering-wheel wear, seat condition and dated invoices. These clues can corroborate an odometer reading, but none proves mileage by itself. Missing periods, handwritten entries without invoices or a seller who will not allow records to be checked are material risks.
Tyres, wheels and suspension
Inspect all four tyres for uneven inner-edge wear, scalloping, cracks, mismatched brands or substantially different tread depths. Uneven wear can indicate alignment, worn bushes, bent components or incorrect inflation. Check the spare wheel or repair kit and the presence of the jack and towing equipment.
Look for fluid leakage around dampers and listen for clunks, squeaks or knocks over a rough but safe road. The car should settle after a bump rather than continue oscillating. A tyre or damper is a service item, but evidence of bent suspension or multiple worn joints can indicate earlier impact damage and a larger repair bill.
Body, chassis and underbody
View the car in daylight and compare panel gaps, paint texture and colour between adjacent panels. Inspect door shuts, boot-floor seams and areas around the headlights for overspray or disturbed fasteners. On a lift, examine the subframes, floor, jacking points, engine area and undertrays for bends, cracks, fresh welds or heavy impact marks.

Obtain available insurance and registration records and ask the seller to identify every repaired panel. A clean exterior does not rule out structural or underbody damage. Have an experienced mechanic perform an independent inspection even when the test drive feels normal.
Drivability, comfort and controls
Start the car from cold if possible. Listen for unusual rattles, vibration or exhaust noise, and check that warning lamps extinguish after the normal self-test. During the drive, assess straight-line tracking, steering-centre feel, braking, gear selection and clutch engagement on manual versions.
Operate the air-conditioning in every mode and fan speed. Check that temperature changes, demisting and rear vents work as intended. Test windows, locks, mirrors, wipers, lights, horn and any powered seats or tailgate fitted to the trim. A vibration under acceleration, judder on clutch take-up, hard gear selection or persistent rattle warrants a written diagnosis rather than a promise that it is “normal.”
A step-by-step inspection sequence
- Verify identity. Photograph the VIN and registration details, then match them with the service book, invoices, insurance records and the seller’s ownership documents.
- Check the cold car. Inspect fluid levels and leaks before starting. Note warning lights during ignition and confirm that they clear after the engine starts.
- Run every electronic function. Test the screen, camera, parking sensors, phone connection, navigation, voice controls and supported connected services. Record any delay, reboot or intermittent operation.
- Inspect tyres and suspension. Measure or visually compare tread, look for uneven wear and leaks, then drive over controlled uneven surfaces while listening for noises.
- Drive both urban and open-road sections. Use stop-go traffic, a moderate-speed straight road and a safe incline. Check clutch, transmission, steering, braking, cooling and air-conditioning under varied loads.
- Lift the vehicle. Ask the mechanic to inspect the underbody, engine area, suspension mounting points, oil or coolant leaks and signs of impact or poor repairs.
- Scan and document. If a technician has suitable equipment, record diagnostic codes and freeze-frame information before clearing anything. Obtain a written estimate for every unresolved issue.
- Resolve discrepancies before payment. Make the sale conditional on a satisfactory inspection, clear title, verified mileage evidence and written agreement about repairs or price adjustments.
Model-year, engine and transmission differences
Equipment and powertrains are not uniform across Hector listings. The original 2019 range included petrol, petrol-hybrid and diesel choices. MG’s January 2023 Next-Gen announcement listed a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with manual or CVT transmission and a 2.0-litre diesel with a manual transmission. Confirm the exact specification from the VIN and registration documents, not from a listing headline.

Warranty and roadside-assistance checks
Do not infer current coverage from the age of the model or a seller’s statement. MG’s 2019 MG Shield launch announcement described five years of unlimited-kilometre warranty for private owners and five years of roadside assistance. MG’s January 2023 Next-Gen announcement also described a five-year warranty and roadside-assistance package. These are historical launch terms, not proof that a specific used vehicle remains covered or that coverage transfers automatically.
Ask an MG dealer to verify the VIN, in-service date, ownership history, warranty claims and any remaining roadside assistance. Request the result in writing and check exclusions, transfer conditions and whether scheduled servicing was required. A warranty document without a matching VIN or dates should not be treated as evidence of entitlement.

MG’s statement dated June 24, 2023, about a Hector diesel thermal incident in Jammu said its technical report found “a severe external impact to the engine area which led to the thermal incident.” That is the manufacturer’s account of one event, not an independent rate of failure.

Neither statement establishes a recurring thermal defect, a recall or a model-wide incident frequency. During a used-car inspection, pay particular attention to underbody and engine-area impact, repaired wiring, heat damage and the quality of any previous repair. Verify any recall or service campaign by VIN with an MG dealer and the relevant Indian authority; the absence of a result in a search is not proof that no campaign exists.
Using an OBD scanner without overtrusting it
A basic OBD-II reader can be a supplementary check for stored emissions-related codes, but compatibility and module coverage vary by Hector year and configuration. A generic reader may not access body, airbag, driver-assistance, transmission or manufacturer-specific data. Do not let a seller clear codes immediately before your inspection; recently erased data can make a clean scan less informative.
Use a qualified technician with equipment appropriate to the vehicle. Treat a code as a clue requiring diagnosis, not as a parts order or a guarantee that no fault exists when no code appears.
How to compare two Hector listings

There is no evidence-supported “best” used Hector variant for every buyer. A well-documented car with verified condition can be a better purchase than a newer listing with gaps, unresolved warning lights or unclear accident history.
Costs, negotiation and walk-away conditions
MG published an estimate of about Rs. 30,000 for five-year maintenance around 2021. That was a historical, manufacturer-published estimate, not a current quote and not a guarantee of total ownership cost. Tyres, accident repairs, batteries, clutch work, suspension parts, insurance, fuel and unexpected electronic repairs can materially change the budget.
Obtain itemised estimates from an independent workshop before negotiating. Deduct the full cost of overdue servicing or safety repairs rather than accepting a vague promise to fix them later. Walk away, or make the transaction conditional on specialist clearance, when the seller refuses a lift inspection, VIN verification or a meaningful test drive; when structural or engine-area impact is suspected; when mileage or ownership documents conflict; or when warning lights, overheating signs or repeated electronic failures remain unexplained.
The safest answer to “what are the common problems?” is therefore vehicle-specific: test the electronics, inspect the chassis and suspension, verify records and coverage, identify the exact powertrain, and pay for an independent diagnosis before committing.
