MG Astor Shine is the cheaper way into the Astor’s naturally aspirated 1.5-litre manual package, while Select adds the equipment most buyers notice every day. In the compared manual specifications, both use the same 1498 cc VTi-TECH petrol engine, five-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. Select costs more for features such as a panoramic sunroof, six airbags, tyre-pressure monitoring, a digital instrument cluster, connected functions and wireless smartphone integration. The right choice depends on whether those additions justify a premium that varies by source, city and model year.

That makes this a trim-value decision rather than a performance upgrade. If you want quicker acceleration, stronger output or a different drivetrain, moving from Shine to Select will not provide that in the compared manual versions.

The official JSW MG Motor India price PDF accessed on 13 October 2026 lists a different set of ex-showroom prices:

On that official list, Select 5MT is ₹1.10 lakh above Shine 5MT, but the CarWale and V3Cars snapshots show ₹1.06 lakh and ₹1.30 lakh gaps respectively. Before paying a booking amount, ask the dealer for the current ex-showroom price for your city, then calculate registration, insurance, tax, accessories and any finance charges separately. An on-road quote can differ substantially from every figure in the tables.
How does Select perform compared with Shine?
For the compared manuals, performance hardware is shared. The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder VTi-TECH petrol engine is quoted at 108 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 144 Nm at 4,400 rpm in both trims. Both use a five-speed manual transmission, front-wheel drive and E20-compatible fuel. Select therefore does not buy you extra power, torque or a different driven axle.

What the identical numbers mean in daily driving
- Acceleration: There is no published output difference to support an expectation that Select will accelerate faster than Shine. Tyre choice, passenger load, air-conditioning use, road gradient and driving technique will influence the experience more than the trim badge.
- Gear selection: Both manual variants require the same kind of driver involvement. Choose based on whether you enjoy operating a clutch and gear lever, not on a presumed Select-specific calibration.
- Highway use: The specifications establish the engine and transmission, but no independent acceleration, overtaking or fuel-economy test is supplied here. Do not treat a higher price as evidence of better highway performance.
- Fuel: E20 compatibility is listed for both. Actual consumption depends on traffic, speed, load, tyre pressure, climate and maintenance; neither trim has a documented efficiency advantage in the available comparison.
When the Select CVT matters
Select is also listed with an eight-speed CVT in the official price snapshot, and V3Cars lists Select CVT at ₹13.98 lakh ex-showroom in its 2024 snapshot, compared with ₹12.98 lakh for Select manual. V3Cars describes that as a ₹1.00 lakh premium over the manual Select. A CVT can suit buyers who spend much of their time in stop-and-go traffic and prefer two-pedal driving, but the supplied material does not provide independent refinement, acceleration or economy testing. The electronic parking brake, auto hold and wireless charging are associated with the CVT specification in the comparison material; confirm that equipment on the exact car you are ordering.
What extra equipment does Select add?
The main reason to move from Shine to Select is its additional safety, convenience and cabin technology. Equipment can change with a model-year update, so use this list as a comparison of the cited specifications and verify the dealer’s build sheet.

Wireless phone integration removes the need to plug in for compatible functions, but it can increase battery use and may not work identically with every handset. During a test drive, pair your own phone, place it in the charging area if fitted, make a call and check that navigation audio and steering controls behave as expected. Connected features are useful only when you intend to use the app functions and accept their data, account and network requirements.
What do Shine and Select have in common?
Shine is not a different mechanical package. In the compared manual specifications, it retains the same 1.5-litre output, manual gearbox, front-wheel-drive layout and E20 compatibility as Select. That shared foundation explains why Shine can be the rational choice for a buyer who values core transport over visible trim upgrades.

Choose Shine when these conditions fit
- Your priority is the lowest purchase price among the two compared manual trims.
- You are satisfied with the shared 1.5-litre, 108 bhp manual powertrain and do not need a CVT.
- You would rather spend the premium on registration, insurance, tyres, maintenance or fuel than on a sunroof and connected functions.

If most of the list would remain unused, Shine preserves the same quoted engine and manual performance while leaving more money for ownership costs.
V3Cars called Select “the feature-rich variant to buy w/ the manual transmission” in its 2024 recommendation table and rated it its top recommendation among the Astor automatics in that analysis. That is an editorial value judgement, not an independent road-test result, so use it as context rather than proof that every buyer should choose Select.

The official price snapshot lists Select 5MT at ₹12,69,800 and Select 8CVT at ₹13,89,800 ex-showroom; V3Cars’ 2024 snapshot lists ₹12.98 lakh and ₹13.98 lakh respectively. Both sources show the automatic costing more, but the exact premium differs by date and pricing source.

Take a traffic-heavy route in both transmissions if possible. A short showroom loop cannot answer whether you prefer the clutch action, engine response or low-speed behavior over long ownership. Also ask whether the quoted CVT car is physically available; a brochure listing does not guarantee inventory in every city.
Buying checklist for an Astor Shine or Select
- Confirm the identity of the car. Write down the model year, variant, transmission, fuel type and manufacturing month on the quotation.
