A Mercedes-Benz VLE prototype photographed with a conventional grille, two rear-quarter filler flaps and what appears to be an exhaust muffler has prompted speculation that the luxury minivan could use a hybrid powertrain. That is Carscoops’ interpretation of the spy-photo clues—not a Mercedes-Benz confirmation. The company has described the VLE as all-electric, and the pictured vehicle’s engine and production status remain unconfirmed.
Why the VLE prototype is being described as a hybrid
In its October 7, 2026 report, Carscoops points to three visible details: a large conventional grille opening, a flap on each rear quarter, and a component beneath the rear floor that appears to be an exhaust muffler. The outlet suggests one flap could be for fuel and the other for charging, which would fit a plug-in hybrid interpretation.
Those clues are not proof of the vehicle’s powertrain. The photos do not establish what is behind the grille, what each flap is for, or whether the apparent muffler is part of a production-intent exhaust system. The report says Mercedes-Benz had not identified an engine for the photographed prototype.
Is the Mercedes VLE a hybrid?
Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed a hybrid VLE in the cited material. Its July 2025 announcement described the VLE as all-electric and said it was planned to reach roads in 2026. The October 2026 spy-photo report raises the possibility of another powertrain, but does not establish that Mercedes will sell one.

Carscoops speculates that the 1.5-liter four-cylinder used in the CLA could be a candidate engine. That is the outlet’s suggestion, not a confirmed VLE specification. Likewise, its comparison cites 272 hp for the electric VLE 300 and 409 hp for the electric VLE 400; those are figures for the electric models as reported by Carscoops, not for the pictured prototype.
What Mercedes has announced about the electric VLE
Mercedes-Benz Group said in July 2025 that the all-electric VLE was planned for a 2026 arrival, would offer up to eight seats, and was intended to cover configurations from family and leisure use to VIP shuttle service. The company positioned it as combining limousine-like driving behavior with the space and flexibility of an MPV. Its March 10, 2026 world-premiere announcement again described an all-electric vehicle designed around ride comfort, driving dynamics, space and flexibility.

In a June 19, 2026 U.S. release, Mercedes-Benz said the electric VLE would offer more than 700 km of WLTP range and could add up to 355 km of WLTP range in 15 minutes. The company also cited 800-volt technology, AIRMATIC air suspension and rear-axle steering. These are manufacturer-published claims about the electric VLE; they do not describe the spy-shot vehicle or establish hybrid range, charging time or performance.

- Powertrain: Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed that the prototype is a hybrid or named an engine for it.
- Production plans: The spy photos and Carscoops’ interpretation do not establish whether a hybrid VLE will reach production.
- Specifications and availability: No confirmed hybrid output, fuel consumption, electric-only range, seating configuration, launch timing or regional availability is provided in the cited material.
If Mercedes-Benz confirms another VLE powertrain, a meaningful comparison with the electric model will depend on confirmed specifications and markets—not on visual clues or an assumed CLA engine. Until then, the reported prototype is a reason to watch for an announcement, not evidence of a production hybrid.
