The 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is best chosen by powertrain first, then by the equipment your local market actually bundles. Mercedes-Benz’s 29 January 2026 update covers V8 and six-cylinder petrol engines, six-cylinder diesels and plug-in hybrids, plus rear-axle steering, suspension, driver assistance, sound, rear-seat and bespoke-design options. The company says online configuration and ordering opened on 30 January 2026. Because the published range is global rather than a country-specific price list, the badge names, standard equipment, option packages and prices must be confirmed in your market’s configurator before you place an order.
What is new about the 2026 S-Class?
Mercedes-Benz says more than 50 per cent of the updated car—around 2,700 components—has been newly developed, updated or refined. That figure is a manufacturer description, not an independent teardown or test result, but it signals that this is more than a cosmetic package. The update retains the S-Class role as a large luxury saloon while giving buyers several distinct propulsion choices and a broad set of comfort and technology decisions.

The official announcement is intentionally market-neutral. It states that “The availability of the equipment, functions, features and services shown depends on the respective vehicle model, the individual configuration and the respective market”. Treat every engine badge and option listed below as an example from the global description, not as a promise that your country offers it. Model year, body length, emissions certification, taxation and local packaging can all change the final specification.

An S-Class badge identifies a powertrain and output position within the range; it is not a universal trim level in the way a fixed “Sport” or “Luxury” grade might be. Mercedes-Benz can bundle equipment differently between countries, and a long-wheelbase version may have a different menu from a standard-length car. Start with the exact model shown by your local configurator, then read the standard-equipment list for that model before comparing options.
#1 Best Overall
| Powertrain family | Named examples in Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 description | What matters when choosing | Availability qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| V8 petrol | S 580 4MATIC | Choose when smooth, effortless petrol performance is the priority and local fuel, tax and emissions rules make sense for you. | The badge is an example from the global press material; confirm sale in your country and desired body length. |
| Six-cylinder petrol | S 450 4MATIC; S 500 4MATIC | A petrol alternative to the V8 with different output and equipment positioning; compare the exact local specification rather than relying on the number alone. | Market and configuration dependent. |
| Six-cylinder diesel | S 350 d 4MATIC; S 450 d 4MATIC | Worth investigating for high-mileage use or buyers who prefer diesel characteristics, subject to local restrictions and fuel availability. | Market and configuration dependent. |
| Plug-in hybrid | S 580 e; S 450 e | Consider if regular charging can cover part of your routine driving and electric operation is valuable enough to justify the added charging and configuration decisions. | Electric range and equipment vary by homologation and configuration; check the exact local version. |
Several of these examples are also described in long versions. Do not assume that a long-wheelbase body, a particular engine or a specific equipment package can be combined in every market; the configurator is the authority for combinations available where you live.
Which S-Class engine should you choose?
Petrol: V8 or six-cylinder
The S 580 4MATIC is the named V8 example. The S 450 4MATIC and S 500 4MATIC are named six-cylinder petrol examples. Mercedes-Benz’s 29 January 2026 announcement does not establish local horsepower, torque, fuel-consumption, acceleration or pricing figures, so those numbers should not be inferred from the badge. Compare the official specification sheets for your country if performance or running cost is decisive.
- Choose a petrol model when: your driving pattern and local regulations favour petrol, you want the simplest decision without charging, and the available model gives the equipment you need.
- Compare the exact 450, 500 and 580 equipment lists: a higher badge may include or require different technology, wheels, interior or body-length choices in one country but not another.
- Check taxation and emissions rules: these can materially change the purchase and annual cost of a large petrol car and differ by jurisdiction.
Diesel: S 350 d or S 450 d
The S 350 d 4MATIC and S 450 d 4MATIC are the named six-cylinder diesel examples. Diesel can suit buyers who cover substantial motorway distances, but the right decision depends on the diesel models actually certified and sold in your market. Check local access rules for urban low-emission zones, expected resale treatment and the fuel network on your regular routes.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Diesel is a use-case decision: estimate your annual distance and the proportion of long, steady journeys rather than assuming that a diesel always costs less.
- Ask for the full local specification: the published global announcement does not provide a universal fuel-economy figure, service schedule or price comparison.
- Verify body and drivetrain combinations: the 4MATIC designation appears in the named examples, but the exact catalogue for your country controls what can be ordered.
Plug-in hybrid: S 450 e or S 580 e
Mercedes-Benz describes S 450 e and S 580 e plug-in hybrids and quotes an electric range of around 100 km. That is a manufacturer-published, source-specific figure; the certified value for your market, wheel and tyre configuration, temperature and test cycle may differ. Use the homologated number shown for the exact car you are ordering.
- Choose a plug-in hybrid if you can charge routinely: home, workplace or dependable public charging makes the electric capability useful; without regular charging, you carry the complexity without using its main advantage.
- Map your normal trips: compare the certified electric range with your daily distance, allowing for weather, speed, heating or air-conditioning and battery reserve.
- Confirm charging details locally: the announcement does not state a universal battery size, charging time, connector specification or included cable. Obtain those figures from the country-specific technical sheet.
- Check luggage and seating requirements: do not assume that every interior, rear-seat or long-wheelbase option is packaged identically with every hybrid version.
Why “trim level” is not a single global answer
Mercedes-Benz’s global article names engines and highlights equipment, but it does not publish one worldwide trim matrix with prices. In practice, a local S-Class configurator may present a base vehicle followed by packages, individual options, model-specific grades or long-body derivatives. Another market may include the same feature as standard on a particular badge. That is why an online list copied from another country can be misleading.
Use this order when reading your local specification:
- Select country and model year. Set the market, currency and model year before looking at equipment. If the site asks for standard or long body, choose the body you actually need.
- Choose the engine and drivetrain. Record the exact badge, fuel type, 4MATIC status and body length.
- Open the standard-equipment list. Separate included items from options and from features available only through a package.
- Price packages before individual items. A package can change the cost and may be required for a later option; the configurator’s dependency notes matter.
- Save the build sheet. Keep the dated PDF or order summary so the quoted equipment is clear when the retailer prepares the contract.
Chassis and steering options
AIRMATIC and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL
Mercedes-Benz describes AIRMATIC suspension and lists E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL as an optional system. The announcement does not establish a single standard-versus-option rule for every country or engine. Confirm whether AIRMATIC is included on your selected car and what E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL adds in that market.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When comparing them, focus on how and where you drive. If the S-Class will cover motorways and city streets with frequent passengers, ask for a demonstration over the surfaces you use. If you rarely carry rear passengers or drive on poor roads, the cost and complexity of an advanced suspension option may be less valuable than a comfort feature you will use every day.
Rear-axle steering
The 2026 description states that 4.5-degree rear-axle steering is standard in the described range, with up to 10 degrees available as an option. This is another figure that must be checked against your local model and wheelbase. Rear steering can be particularly relevant to a large saloon in tight garages and urban streets, so include your parking space in the test drive rather than judging the option from a brochure alone.
Driver assistance and technology
The press material highlights MB.DRIVE assistance features, but it does not define one universal package or list every function included with every badge. Ask the retailer for the exact functions, operating conditions and legal limitations in your country. Assistance systems are aids, not substitutes for an attentive driver, and names or capabilities can change with software, regulation and configuration.
- Request the local standard-equipment and options sheet for MB.DRIVE features.
- Check whether a function is included, subscription-based, package-dependent or unavailable on the chosen engine.
- Ask which functions operate only on approved roads or under specific markings and weather conditions.
- During a demonstration, test the interface, warning style and steering-wheel controls; comfort matters as much as the feature count.
Audio, cabin comfort and rear-seat equipment
Sound systems
Optional Burmester 3D surround and high-end 4D surround sound systems are highlighted. The global announcement does not state wattage, speaker count, package price or standard fitment. Listen to both systems in a vehicle with the same body length and cabin, because interior configuration can affect the experience. If rear passengers are your priority, make sure the demonstration includes their seating position rather than only the front seats.
Rear-seat and thermal comfort
The updated S-Class offers rear-seat equipment, thermal-comfort features and air-quality equipment as areas for configuration. Exact functions and bundling depend on the local car. Build a rear-passenger brief before selecting options:
Rank #3
- Brand New: Unopened
- Exquisitely Detailed
- 1:18 Scale
- Officially Licensed
- How often will an adult use the rear seats, and on which side?
- Do you need reclining, heating, ventilation or other comfort functions, and are they available on the selected wheelbase?
- Will the driver or a chauffeur control the settings, and are the controls intuitive for the passenger?
- Is air-quality equipment valuable for your climate and traffic conditions, or would a simpler specification meet the need?
Do not assume that a visually similar interior includes the same thermal or air-quality functions. Have the retailer identify each item by its local option name and code on the order sheet.
MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure: bespoke choices
Mercedes-Benz says MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure offers more than 150 exterior colours and over 400 interior colours, alongside consultation and details such as door sills, steering-wheel variants and emblem packages. The company describes pre-approved choices and individually evaluated requests. These are manufacturer-published counts, not a guarantee that every combination is orderable in every market.
How to decide whether bespoke specification is worthwhile
- Start with a durable base: select the engine, body and comfort equipment before colour, trim and emblem details.
- Ask about lead time: individually evaluated requests may require approval and can affect production timing.
- Confirm the exact sample: view paint, leather and trim under daylight and interior lighting; digital configurators cannot reproduce every finish perfectly.
- Consider resale: an unusual combination can be highly desirable to one buyer and difficult for another. Choose personal details knowingly rather than assuming they increase value.
- Get every bespoke item written into the contract: retain the approved description, colour name and any evaluation reference.
A practical S-Class ordering process
- Define the mission. Write down annual mileage, typical trip length, passenger count, charging access, garage dimensions and the countries or cities where the car will be used.
- Shortlist powertrains. Compare one petrol, one diesel (if sold locally) and one plug-in hybrid that fit your use case. For hybrids, measure your daily route against the certified electric range.
- Choose body length and seating priority. Confirm whether the named engine and rear-seat equipment are available together in standard and long versions.
- Build the local car. Use the official country configurator or an authorised retailer’s current system, not a foreign brochure. Record included equipment, package dependencies and option prices.
- Test the complete specification. Drive the selected powertrain and suspension; sit in every seat you will use; test the steering radius in a realistic parking space; listen to the chosen audio system.
- Audit running requirements. For a plug-in hybrid, confirm charging access and cable details. For diesel, check local access rules. For any model, ask for service intervals, warranty terms and roadside assistance applicable to your market.
- Review the order summary. Verify engine badge, drivetrain, body length, paint, upholstery, wheels, suspension, rear steering, assistance, audio, rear-seat and bespoke options before signing.
- Save the dated confirmation. Mercedes-Benz says online configuration and ordering began on 30 January 2026; availability and delivery timing still depend on market, production and the individual build.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a global badge list is your local range
The named S 580 4MATIC, S 450 4MATIC, S 500 4MATIC, S 350 d 4MATIC, S 450 d 4MATIC, S 580 e and S 450 e examples come from a global description. A country may omit a badge, offer it only in a long version or package it differently. Use the local configurator as the final authority.

Treating the electric-range figure as a guarantee
“Around 100 km” is the manufacturer’s description for the plug-in hybrid electric range. It is not a promise of real-world distance in every season or configuration. Compare the certified local figure and plan a charging routine before selecting an S 450 e or S 580 e.
Buying options by name alone
A feature name does not tell you whether it is standard, optional, package-only or unavailable on your car. Request the option code and a written description. This is especially important for E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, rear-axle steering, MB.DRIVE functions, sound systems and rear-seat equipment.
Choosing a bespoke finish before checking compatibility
MANUFAKTUR’s large colour catalogue does not mean every exterior, interior, wheel and emblem combination is approved. Confirm compatibility and approval before paying a deposit, and establish how a special request affects lead time or cancellation terms.
Ignoring the people in the back
If the S-Class is a chauffeur or family car, a rear-seat comfort decision may matter more than a marginal engine upgrade. Sit in the rear, test the controls and verify the exact thermal, air-quality and seating functions on the order sheet.
Which specification fits your use?
Mostly urban driving with reliable charging
Begin with the locally available S 450 e or S 580 e. Confirm the certified electric range, charging equipment and rear-seat or luggage configuration, then decide whether your normal trips can be completed with regular charging. If charging is occasional, compare a petrol alternative instead of assuming the hybrid will deliver its intended benefit.
Long-distance motorway work
Compare the six-cylinder diesel examples, where available, with the six-cylinder petrol cars on your market. Concentrate on local fuel cost, access rules, annual mileage and the comfort equipment you will use for long hours. Do not select solely from the badge hierarchy because the global material does not provide a universal price or efficiency ranking.
Maximum petrol performance and specification freedom
Investigate the S 580 4MATIC where it is sold, then verify which suspension, rear-steering, audio, rear-seat and MANUFAKTUR choices can be combined. A higher engine badge does not automatically include every luxury option.
Rear-passenger comfort first
Start with the long version if offered locally, then specify rear-seat, thermal-comfort and air-quality equipment. Compare the available sound systems from the rear seat and confirm that the selected powertrain and body length support the required package.
Final pre-order checklist
- Correct country, model year and currency selected.
- Engine, fuel type, 4MATIC status and body length recorded.
- Certified plug-in-hybrid electric range checked for the exact configuration, if applicable.
- Standard equipment separated from packages and individual options.
- AIRMATIC and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL status confirmed.
- Rear-axle steering specification confirmed: 4.5 degrees described as standard in the cited range, up to 10 degrees optional, subject to local fitment.
- MB.DRIVE functions and legal operating limits explained by the retailer.
- Burmester 3D or 4D system identified by exact local option name.
- Rear-seat, thermal-comfort and air-quality features tested and written into the order.
- MANUFAKTUR colours and individually evaluated requests approved in writing.
- Charging, fuel, service, warranty and delivery terms documented.
The right 2026 S-Class is not determined by a universal “best trim”. Choose the powertrain that matches your driving and regulations, then spend the option budget on the controls, suspension, rear-seat comfort and cabin details you will use. Mercedes-Benz’s own market qualification makes the final local build sheet—not a global badge list—the document to trust.
