Mercedes says the enclosed layout could keep brake-wear particles from escaping, resist corrosion and allow lighter, more aerodynamic wheels. The company’s announcement, published November 22, 2024, describes research—not a production feature or a confirmed launch.
What is Mercedes’ In-Drive Brake?
In a conventional car, mechanical brakes act at the wheels. Mercedes’ concept relocates the mechanical brake into the closed electric motor-transmission unit at the front or rear axle. The company says the brake takes up little installation space. Because the unit is enclosed, Mercedes says brake-wear particles would not escape outside it. Mercedes-Benz’s November 22, 2024 announcement presents the system as a response to how electric vehicles brake: they can recover energy through regenerative braking, while still requiring mechanical braking in some circumstances.
How could it reduce brake dust?
Friction between brake components can create wear particles. Mercedes’ proposed approach is to enclose the mechanical brake within the motor-transmission unit, so particles produced by brake wear remain inside rather than escaping around the wheel. The announcement describes this as an intended benefit, but does not report a measured reduction, dust-emission rate or independent test result. It therefore supports the design rationale, not a quantified claim about how much dust the brake would eliminate.
What other benefits does Mercedes claim?
Mercedes describes the concept as having little brake wear, being resistant to rust and requiring near-zero maintenance. It also says braking should remain consistent under heavy load. The company suggests that moving the brake could permit a lighter wheel-and-tire combination, reducing unsprung mass, and closed wheel designs without openings for brake cooling. These are company-described research benefits or potential design outcomes; the announcement does not provide comparative durability, maintenance, performance or aerodynamic data.

- This acid-free wheel, tire, and brake cleaner is safe for all wheel types and finishes, including, steel, aluminum, chrome, paint, powder coat, and more. This cleaner is harsh on removing brake dust, iron, and road fallout, but easy on your rims.
- Restore your tires and wheels to a factory-fresh color. Just spray it on, let it clean, and agitate with a soft bristle brush on the face, barrel, tire, and brake parts to break up stubborn contaminants. Just spray with water afterward and clean with a microfiber towel.
- Can be used straight from the bottle or diluted in a foam sprayer. This product can be diluted in any foam sprayer to create a generous foram that easily lifts first, brake dust, and road contaminants from the wheel and tire.
- Leaves a protective coating that helps repel any future tarnishing, staging, or grime buildup. In addition, you can easily and safely apply wheel and tire sealants to extend the life of your clean and shiny wheels.
Is the In-Drive Brake in production?
Mercedes described the In-Drive Brake as research in its November 22, 2024 announcement. That announcement does not state a production model, launch date, price, supplier or customer availability. It also does not establish that the technology has since reached production. Treat it as a research concept unless Mercedes confirms a later rollout for a specific vehicle and market.
How it differs from Mercedes’ one-box EV brakes
The In-Drive Brake changes the location of a mechanical brake. A one-box brake system instead manages braking functions in a vehicle, including the coordination of regenerative and friction braking. Mercedes has described one-box systems for the electric GLC and GLB; those are separate from the In-Drive research concept.

| System | What Mercedes describes | Recuperation claim | Status and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-Drive Brake | Mechanical brake integrated into the closed electric motor-transmission unit at either axle; intended to contain brake-wear particles. | No In-Drive recuperation figure stated in the announcement. | Research described by Mercedes on November 22, 2024; no production model or availability stated. Source |
| Electric GLC one-box brake | Combines the brake booster, master cylinder and ESP control, coordinating regenerative and friction braking. Mercedes says the vehicle can brake electrically to a standstill. | Mercedes claims up to approximately 300 kW for the electric GLC. It also reports hydraulic braking is unnecessary in more than 99 percent of cases during sufficiently strong deceleration in the D- setting. | Model-specific system description; the 300 kW and 99 percent claims are Mercedes’ claims for the electric GLC, not the In-Drive Brake. Source |
| Electric GLB one-box by-wire brake | Mercedes says most braking uses recuperation and the vehicle can brake electrically to a standstill; hydraulic braking serves as a fallback if the system faults. | Mercedes claims up to 200 kW for the electric GLB. | Model-specific system description; the 200 kW figure is not an In-Drive Brake specification. The GLC and GLB figures apply to their respective model systems and should not be combined or generalized to all Mercedes EVs. Mercedes’ descriptions also do not establish that In-Drive is installed in either model. Availability and specifications for the production systems may vary by model year and market.
