The “big updates coming” headline dates to a March 31, 2024 Car and Driver report. Since then, Mercedes-Benz has announced a substantially revised S-Class and a separate, updated 2027 EQS. The original report’s product-cycle dates remain forecasts attributed in part to an anonymous source—not official Mercedes-Benz commitments.
What the 2024 report forecast
Car and Driver reported that the S-Class was expected to receive updates in 2026 and 2029, with production projected to end in 2033. It also discussed changes to the EQS and a planned replacement. The product-cycle details were reporting about expected plans, not a schedule Mercedes-Benz had officially committed to. Read the March 31, 2024 report.
The article also relayed one anonymous source’s view that customers saw the EQS as closer to a stretched E-Class than a proper S-Class. That is one source’s characterization, not a verified measure of customer opinion or an official Mercedes-Benz position.
What Mercedes announced for the S-Class
In a May 13, 2026 release, Mercedes-Benz USA described the new S-Class as the most extensive update within a single generation of the model series. The company said more than 50 percent of the car—approximately 2,700 components—had been newly developed, updated, or refined. That figure is Mercedes-Benz’s account of the update’s scope, not an independently audited count. See Mercedes-Benz USA’s S-Class announcement.

Cabin, software and lighting
Mercedes-Benz lists its MB.OS operating system, an MBUX Superscreen and fourth-generation MBUX among the changes. The release also describes revised DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps. These are part of a broad revision to the luxury sedan, rather than evidence that the S-Class and EQS have become one model.
Powertrains and chassis
The manufacturer also announced updated electrified powertrains and changes to the suspension and rear-axle steering. On the S 580e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid, Mercedes-Benz states combined output of up to 576 hp. Optional 10-degree rear-axle steering can reduce the turning circle to 35.4 feet, according to the company; neither specification applies to every S-Class configuration.

Other listed features include heated front seatbelts. Mercedes-Benz’s release describes the package of changes, but the cited announcement does not establish that every feature or configuration will be offered identically in every market.
What is changing on the 2027 EQS
Mercedes-Benz USA announced a distinct update for the 2027 EQS, expected at U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2026. Its focus is the battery-electric car’s electrical and propulsion systems. The announcement identifies an 800-volt electrical architecture, in-house electric drive units, a two-speed transmission on the rear axle’s main drive unit, and a larger battery with optimized cell chemistry. Battery, charging and range figures
Mercedes-Benz specifies a 122-kWh usable battery for the EQS 450+, EQS 500 4MATIC and EQS 580 4MATIC in the announcement. It also gives a maximum DC fast-charging capacity of up to 350 kW. These are manufacturer figures for the named update and trims; the release does not make them universal specifications for every EQS configuration or market.
Mercedes-Benz states that the updated EQS can add up to 320 km of WLTP range in as little as 10 minutes, and gives the EQS 450+ a maximum WLTP range of up to 925 km. WLTP is the test cycle attached to those figures: they are not EPA estimates and should not be directly compared with range figures measured under a different cycle.

Optional steer-by-wire
Mercedes-Benz says steer-by-wire will be an optional production feature on the updated EQS, with conventional electromechanical steering remaining available. The company says the system uses redundant signal paths. Mercedes-Benz Media reports more than one million test kilometres across test benches, test tracks and public-road vehicle validation; that describes the manufacturer’s validation program, not independent verification. The two announcements address different cars and different priorities. The S-Class update spans multiple electrified powertrains and luxury-sedan systems; the EQS update concentrates on battery-electric hardware and related technology. The available manufacturer announcements do not establish a like-for-like performance comparison or a winner.

How to read the original headline now
The 2024 headline captured a forecast, not a completed announcement. The later Mercedes-Benz releases establish that a major S-Class update was announced and that the 2027 EQS is planned with substantial electric-drive changes. They do not, by themselves, confirm the original report’s projected S-Class update dates for 2029 or production end in 2033, nor do they validate the anonymous source’s assessment of EQS customer perception.
