How to check it
- Read the VIN, build information and engine designation from the car and its paperwork.
- Ask the seller whether the engine harness was replaced and request an invoice showing the date, supplier or part number, and the engine application.
- Have a Mercedes-Benz specialist inspect the visible harness covering and connectors. Brittle insulation, exposed conductors or repairs that are not documented warrant further diagnosis.
- Price the car on the basis of a confirmed inspection and written estimate, not on an internet assumption that every 1993–1995 car has the same condition.
A replacement engine wiring harness is the directly relevant repair part when inspection confirms an affected original harness. Verify VIN, engine, market and part-number fitment with the seller or specialist; a generic harness listing is not proof of compatibility.
Air-conditioning evaporator leaks on pre-1996 cars
The club guide reports that air-conditioning evaporators in pre-1996 cars may leak. Reaching the evaporator requires disassembly of the entire dashboard, so a cooling-system complaint deserves attention before you buy rather than after the first hot-weather drive.
Test the system methodically
- Start the car with the climate control set to maximum cooling and the blower at several speeds.
- Confirm that the compressor engages as expected and that the vents produce consistently cold air after the system has stabilized.
- Change temperature, vent distribution and recirculation settings. A system that cools briefly, cycles abnormally or cannot hold a charge needs diagnosis.
- Ask for records of refrigerant service, leak testing and any dashboard work. A refrigerant top-up without a documented leak repair does not establish that the evaporator is sound.
Weak cooling does not prove an evaporator leak: other components can cause similar symptoms. Have a qualified technician test the system and identify the leak location. Do not represent dashboard removal as a confirmed requirement for a particular car until that diagnosis is made.

Checks to perform at the car

What to observe
- Run the glass from fully closed to fully open and back without stopping.
- Watch for tilting, slow travel, bouncing, glass that drops into the door, or a motor that runs after movement stops.
- Listen for clicking, grinding or repeated attempts to move the glass.

It also calls out a W140-specific configuration: V12 models use a tandem power-steering pump that supplies both steering assistance and self-levelling suspension. Do not generalize that arrangement to every engine or assume that every W140 has self-levelling equipment.

- With the engine running, turn the steering through its range while stationary only briefly, watching for abnormal noise, heavy assistance or fluid seepage.
- Inspect the pump, hoses, reservoir and surrounding components for fresh or accumulated fluid.

Engine mounts and vibration at idle
The buyer’s guide recommends inspecting the fluid-filled engine mounts and says collapsed mounts can cause idle vibration. Sit in the car with the engine fully warmed, observe vibration in Park or Neutral and, where safe, in Drive with the brake applied. Compare the sensation with the engine speed and listen for misfire or accessory noise.
Vibration alone does not prove a collapsed mount. A rough idle, ignition fault, driveline issue or exhaust contact can feel similar. Ask the inspector to identify the source before treating mounts as the repair.
