The Mercedes-Benz W124 began as a sedan presented in Seville on November 26, 1984, and reached the market in 1985. It became the foundation of a much broader 124 model series: wagons, coupes, cabriolets, long-wheelbase sedans and specialist chassis joined it. Mercedes-Benz’s histories point to the series’ aerodynamic development, multi-link rear suspension, broad engine range and long-running factory parts support as key parts of its legacy.

What does “W124” mean?

Strictly, W 124 identifies the sedan. The wider 124 series included several body styles with their own internal designations. In everyday conversation, “W124” is often used for the family as a whole, but the distinction matters when discussing a particular car or checking parts fitment.

Designation Body style
W 124 Sedan
S 124 Estate or T-model
C 124 Coupe
A 124 Cabriolet
V 124 Long-wheelbase sedan

Mercedes-Benz also built chassis forms for specialist bodies, including ambulances and hearses. Sedans and wagons served as taxis, while coupes and cabriolets offered a sportier luxury format. The Mercedes-Benz Classic parts catalog lists W 124, S 124, C 124, A 124 and V 124 as separate series paths; check the catalog when identifying a specific vehicle or component.

How the 124 series developed

From sedan to multi-body range

Mercedes-Benz presented the sedan in Seville, Spain, on November 26, 1984; sedans entered the market in 1985. The estate, coupe, long-wheelbase sedan and cabriolet followed, extending the platform across different kinds of luxury-car use.

The E-Class name and the end of production

In June 1993, Mercedes-Benz adopted the E-Class name for the 124 series as part of a broader change in model nomenclature. For example, the 500 E became the E 500. Several end dates appear in Mercedes-Benz histories because they refer to different milestones: sedan production ended at Sindelfingen in 1995, parts-kit production was phased out in 1996, and Mercedes-Benz Media describes the broader series as ending in 1997.

What distinguished the engineering?

Aerodynamics, weight and development

Mercedes-Benz says the design brief sought a lighter, more aerodynamic and safer successor to the preceding model. Its U.S. Classic Center history reports that ten 1:5 clay models were created in 1977, with a drag-coefficient target of Cd = 0.32; the final design was settled in 1981 after seven full-scale clay models. Crash testing began in 1982, and around 60 vehicles were used for extensive road testing across climate zones. These are manufacturer-reported development details.

At the 1984 introduction, Mercedes-Benz says journalists praised the car’s efficiency and drag-coefficient figures of 0.29 to 0.30, depending on engine and equipment. Those reported figures describe the production car configurations discussed at launch, not the earlier design target. Mercedes-Benz Classic also highlights high-strength sheet steel and other weight-reducing materials, deformation zones, and passenger-compartment resistance in side-impact and rollover scenarios.

Suspension, emissions and four-wheel drive

The series introduced a multi-link rear suspension, a technical feature emphasized in Mercedes-Benz’s histories. From autumn 1986, gasoline models had feedback-controlled three-way catalytic converters as standard, according to the manufacturer’s U.S. history. Six-cylinder models could be equipped with automatically engaging 4MATIC from 1985, and turbocharging expanded the diesel range with the 300 D Turbo in 1987.

A broad engine range

The sedan range at launch covered several fuel and engine configurations. Mercedes-Benz USA lists the diesel 200 D, 250 D and 300 D; the carbureted Mercedes-Benz 200; and the gasoline-injection 200 E, 230 E, 260 E and 300 E. Later additions included high-performance models: Mercedes-Benz Media identifies the 500 E, introduced in 1990, as a 240 kW (326 PS) V8, followed by the E 60 AMG in 1993. Exact specifications and availability varied by market and model year.

How many 124-series cars were built?

Mercedes-Benz USA reports 2,213,167 sedans built over eleven years and 2,737,860 vehicles for the entire 124 series. These are manufacturer production figures; the larger total includes the series’ body-style breadth, not just sedans.

What should I know before buying a Mercedes W124?

Start by identifying the actual body style, model year and drivetrain rather than relying on “W124” alone. The 1993 naming change is another reason to confirm the car’s exact model designation. When comparing examples, consider how the intended use fits the body style and engine, whether the car is rear-wheel drive or equipped with 4MATIC, and whether parts for that particular configuration can be sourced.

  • Body style: sedan, estate/T-model, coupe, cabriolet or long-wheelbase sedan.
  • Engine and fuel type: the series covered both diesel and gasoline engines, with different offerings over time and across markets.
  • Drivetrain: rear-wheel drive or, on eligible six-cylinder models, 4MATIC.
  • Year and designation: distinguish the 1993 E-Class nomenclature phase from earlier naming.
  • Parts fitment: verify the exact model, engine, transmission, body and part number before ordering.

Mercedes-Benz’s histories establish the series’ engineering and model breadth, but they do not provide a present-day reliability ranking, used-car price guide, common-fault checklist or repair-cost estimate. They should not be used as a substitute for evaluating an individual car.

Checking replacement parts

Mercedes-Benz Classic’s 124-series catalog lets owners search by part name or number and select a model, engine and transmission. Categories include brakes, electrics and lighting, transmission, clutch and gearshift, heating and cooling, chassis and axles, interior, body and engine. The catalog also warns that some components are no longer reissued and suggests considering reconditioning or open-market sourcing in those cases. Confirm current availability and exact fitment before relying on a listing.

In a November 21, 2024 release, Mercedes-Benz Media said more than 5,800 parts were then available for the 124 generation, including more than 1,000 used exclusively by the series. It described reproductions made to manufacturer specifications and noted a focus on safety- and driving-relevant parts. Those counts are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of present inventory.

Documenting a car’s factory data

Mercedes-Benz’s Classic Birth document records original factory vehicle data and is described as an authenticity document for classic vehicles from 1986 to 2010. That stated eligibility window includes many W124 production years, but it does not establish eligibility for vehicles outside that period. See the Classic Birth document information for details.

Finding a marque community

Mercedes-Benz Media identifies W 124-Club Deutschland e.V. as a contact point for owners and enthusiasts, with events, technical information across variants and workshops. The manufacturer describes it as a recognized marque club, not as an official parts seller. Its 2024 release also cites around 80 recognized clubs and more than 120,000 members across the Mercedes-Benz brand network; those figures are brand-wide, not counts for the W124 club alone.
