Its lavish cabin—complete with a retractable cinema screen and a large surround-sound system—previews the premium end of Mercedes-Benz’s future van direction. Calling that “van life” is a joke about a passenger van built like a private lounge, not a promise of practical life on the road.
What is the Mercedes-Benz Vision V?
Mercedes-Benz presented the Vision V at Auto Shanghai 2025 as a show car and a preview of the top end of its future MPV range. The company described the concept as a chauffeur-driven “Private Lounge,” emphasizing passenger space, exclusivity and digital entertainment rather than camping or self-sufficient travel. The Vision V therefore signals a design direction; it is not evidence of a production van or a model currently available to buy.
Mercedes-Benz said its modular van architecture was intended to usher in a new era starting in 2026. That was a company roadmap statement made in 2025, not confirmation that a Vision V production vehicle—or every planned vehicle on the architecture—launched on that timetable. Mercedes-Benz Media Newsroom’s Vision V announcement and its Auto Shanghai 2025 overview describe the concept and the roadmap.
What is inside the “Private Lounge”?
Mercedes-Benz’s April 2025 description lists three headline entertainment features: a retractable 65-inch cinema display, a surround-sound system with 42 speakers, and seven projectors. These are manufacturer-described features of a show car, not independently tested production specifications.

New Atlas’s April 24, 2025 account also describes a partition separating the cockpit from the rear passenger space, switchable-tint glazing, reclining seats, a fold-out chess table, and a minibar/display cabinet. It reports Mercedes-Benz’s claim of 450 red light louvres at the rear. Those cabin and lighting details are reported by the article; the official Mercedes-Benz pages cited here confirm the screen, speaker and projector figures, but do not independently establish the other details.
Why the “van life” description misses the point
The phrase is deliberately playful: the Vision V takes the van body style and turns its passenger compartment into a chauffeur-driven lounge. The concept’s partition, reclining seating and entertainment equipment suggest private travel for rear-seat passengers, not a camper layout designed for sleeping, cooking or everyday recreation. No camper conversion or practical camping features are established by the cited descriptions.

That distinction also explains the gap between the show car and a usable production van. The Vision V demonstrates an ambitious luxury interior, but the cited announcements do not establish its final passenger configuration, powertrain, production specifications, price or availability. It is best read as a statement about the top end of Mercedes-Benz’s future MPV ambitions, not as a finished vehicle shoppers can assess against a camper or current van.

So, is this what van travelers are looking for? The available descriptions cannot answer that as a question about travelers’ preferences: they offer no consumer survey, and the Vision V is aimed at a different idea of van travel in the first place—a secluded, entertainment-rich ride for chauffeured passengers.
