Goodyear’s moss-filled tire, called Oxygene, was a concept unveiled in 2018—not a confirmed retail tire or a proven way to clean city air. The design proposed using moss in the sidewall to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but Goodyear’s headline environmental figures described a hypothetical city-scale scenario, not measured performance.
What was Goodyear’s Oxygene tire?
Goodyear introduced Oxygene on March 6, 2018, at the Geneva International Motor Show as a concept for future urban mobility. Its defining feature was living moss growing inside an open section of the tire sidewall. Goodyear proposed that the tread and open structure would collect moisture from the road and circulate it toward the moss. The moss would then use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis and release oxygen. Goodyear’s announcement describes the intended design, not evidence of a tire deployed in city traffic.
How was the concept supposed to work?

The idea was to make the tire’s sidewall a living surface. Goodyear said an open structure and tread would absorb and circulate moisture, supporting moss growth. The moss was intended to take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis. The announcement does not provide independent measurements establishing how much the proposed tire could accomplish in real-world use.
Other proposed features
Oxygene combined the moss concept with several other experimental features. Goodyear described a non-pneumatic structure made using 3D-printed rubber powder from recycled tires, embedded electronics powered by energy from photosynthesis, a sidewall light strip intended to signal maneuvers, and LiFi connectivity for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure data exchange. These were proposed concept features, not confirmed capabilities of a consumer tire.

What did Goodyear’s environmental estimate mean?
Goodyear estimated that Oxygene tires in a city similar in size to greater Paris could generate nearly 3,000 tons of oxygen and absorb more than 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, assuming about 2.5 million vehicles. Those figures came from Goodyear’s 2018 hypothetical scenario; they were not measured results from a city deployment or an independent lifecycle analysis.
The announcement does not establish that Oxygene would offset vehicle emissions at a meaningful scale, improve air quality in field use, or deliver a net environmental benefit over a conventional tire. It also does not provide independent validation or a lifecycle comparison. The figures should therefore be read as the company’s projection for a proposed concept, not a verified environmental outcome.

Can you buy Goodyear’s moss-filled tire?
The reviewed official sources do not confirm that Oxygene is currently available for purchase. Goodyear presented it as a concept in 2018; its later sustainability announcements cover other tire demonstrations and goals, not an Oxygene production launch.

Goodyear’s January 2023 announcement described a 90% sustainable-material demonstration tire and said it had passed applicable regulatory and internal testing. It also discussed plans for a tire with up to 70% sustainable material in 2023. Neither was identified as Oxygene. The 2023 announcement concerns a separate demonstration tire.

On its current commitments page, Goodyear reports that in 2025 it demonstrated in a laboratory the ability to produce a tire made with 95% sustainable materials. The page also lists a goal for a 100% sustainable-material and maintenance-free tire by 2030. These are company-wide updates, distinct from the moss-filled concept; neither establishes that Oxygene entered production.

What should drivers take away?
- Oxygene was a 2018 Goodyear concept featuring moss in the tire sidewall.
