Ask about fees before you go. Your local solid-waste agency can point you to available options, including municipal tire-collection events.
Where can you take old tires?
Household options vary by location. Common routes include retailer take-back, a local tire recycler, and municipal collection events. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends checking local rules and confirming acceptance before transporting tires; its recycling guidance and used-tire guide are useful starting points.
- Tire retailer: Call first to ask whether it accepts tires not purchased there, which tire types it takes, and whether it has a quantity limit or fee.
- Local tire recycler: Confirm the facility accepts your tire size and type, whether it takes tires mounted on rims, and what charges or appointment requirements apply.
- Municipal collection event: Check with your city or county solid-waste agency for event dates, residency rules, accepted quantities, and drop-off instructions.
Do not assume a nearby landfill accepts whole tires. Landfill rules differ: some facilities have special restrictions, require tires to be shredded or cut first, or charge additional handling fees. Check with the state or local agency and the receiving facility rather than relying on a general rule.
What should you ask before making the trip?
Acceptance, limits, and charges are local, so get the details from the facility or event organizer. Ask:

What if the tires are still on rims?
Tell the receiving facility before you arrive. Some recyclers will not accept rimmed tires. EPA notes that separating a tire from a rim may require specialized equipment; do not try to remove a rim with a saw or torch, which can ignite the tire and create a serious hazard. The rim may be recyclable as scrap metal, but check with the facility about its process.
Why shouldn’t you leave tires outside or abandon them?
EPA warns that piles of tires can provide habitat for pests such as rodents and can catch fire. Store unwanted tires only as needed while arranging an accepted drop-off, and do not dump them on private or public land.

What happens to tires after collection?
Used tires can be processed for a range of potential uses, including road-gravel replacement, traffic-safety barricades, roof shingles, running tracks, artificial turf, landfill covers, and civil-engineering projects. These are possible downstream uses, not a guarantee that a particular local program accepts every tire or turns it into a specific product.
One processed material is tire crumb rubber, made by reducing scrap tires into particle sizes suited to different applications and removing 99 percent or more of the steel and fabric, according to EPA’s scrap-tire markets information. This describes industrial processing; it is not a reason to cut up or otherwise process tires at home.

Why do tire-disposal rules vary by state?
Scrap-tire management is primarily handled at the state level, so requirements and approved routes differ by location. EPA reported in 2025 that 48 states have laws or regulations specifically addressing scrap-tire management. Check your state or local solid-waste agency for rules that apply where you live.
In a March 20, 2026 announcement about a proposed rule, EPA said approximately 48 million abandoned scrap tires remained in at least 23 states and Tribal lands. The announcement does not give a survey date for that estimate, and the proposal’s status after its May 22, 2026 comment deadline is not established here. The figure should not be read as a current, newly surveyed inventory or as evidence that the proposal became final.
