The company bases the estimate on an 11-square-metre (about 118-square-foot) solar surface, roughly the body area of a mid-size SUV.
What is Mercedes-Benz solar paint?
Mercedes-Benz is researching photovoltaic modules that could be applied across an electric vehicle’s bodywork as a very thin coating. The company describes the material as adaptable to different substrates and says it could generate energy while the vehicle is parked or driving. That energy could be used to drive the vehicle or fed directly to its high-voltage battery.
Mercedes-Benz reports that its research modules are 5 micrometres thick, weigh 50 grams per square metre and have solar-cell efficiency of 20%. The company also says they contain no silicon or rare earths and could be recycled. These are Mercedes-Benz’s descriptions of its research technology, not independently verified specifications for a consumer product.
What does the 7,456-mile figure mean?
The figure is the approximate conversion of Mercedes-Benz’s estimate of up to 12,000 kilometres of energy yield per year from an 11-square-metre surface under ideal conditions. The company’s US Vision Iconic release expresses a similar estimate as approximately 7,450 miles per year from 118 square feet. The small difference is rounding; neither number is a promise of additional miles on one charge.

Actual output would depend on how much sunlight reaches the vehicle, the sun’s intensity and where the vehicle is used. Mercedes-Benz states: “The yield depends on levels of shade, the intensity of the sun and geographical location.” A parked car in a garage or consistently shaded space would not receive the same exposure as one in direct sun.
The 12,000-kilometre and 7,450-mile figures are manufacturer estimates for an idealized solar area, not measured results from a production car. Mercedes-Benz’s reviewed official materials do not provide an independent test protocol or peer-reviewed validation for the estimate. Nor do they establish a universal range gain: usable driving distance would depend on the vehicle and on how much energy the surface actually collects.

How Mercedes-Benz’s local examples should be read
The company’s research page offers illustrative location-based scenarios, not customer results. It assumes an average daily driving distance of 52 kilometres in Stuttgart and estimates that solar energy could cover around 62% of that distance. For Los Angeles, it describes a possible average energy surplus. These examples reflect Mercedes-Benz’s assumptions for those locations; they are not forecasts that apply to every driver in either city.
Is the solar coating available on a Mercedes?
No production vehicle, consumer product, price or commercialization date is announced in the reviewed Mercedes-Benz materials. The company describes the body-applied modules as research and says it is working toward applying them across exterior surfaces of different shapes and angles. The 7,456-mile estimate therefore should not be treated as a feature buyers can currently order.

How this differs from the VISION EQXX solar roof
Mercedes-Benz has also described a separate solar-roof demonstration on the VISION EQXX. That vehicle used 117 roof-mounted solar cells to power a 12-volt system for auxiliary consumers such as navigation. The company said that reducing the load on the high-voltage system could add about 25 kilometres (16 miles) on a long journey under ideal conditions. This was a distinct vehicle and system, not a test of the proposed body coating or proof of its estimated annual yield.
