A 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti sold in Paris in 2016 for €32,075,200, while a 2025 article listed Cristiano Ronaldo’s Bugatti La Voiture Noire at £12 million. Those figures describe different kinds of evidence, not a confirmed contest between cars owned by the two footballers.
What Ferrari is behind the £25m claim?
The car is a 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti, chassis 0674. The Football Group’s July 12, 2025 article described it as a £25 million Ferrari and said Messi was “thought to be” its buyer. That wording signals speculation; it does not establish that he owns the car or paid that amount. The Football Group’s report
The transaction itself took place at Artcurial’s Retromobile auction in Paris on February 5, 2016. Sports Car Digest reported a sale price of €32,075,200 ($35,711,359) and described the buyer as an international collector in the room, without naming that person. Sports Car Digest’s auction account
Contemporary AS.com coverage said the buyer was anonymous and that Messi could have been the buyer, attributing the possibility to Proto Organization. That is a report of a possibility, not confirmation. AS.com’s report

Is Messi confirmed as the Ferrari’s owner?
No. The reviewed auction account identifies an unnamed international collector, and the contemporary speculation does not verify that the collector was Messi. No official statement from Messi, Ferrari, Bugatti, or the auctioneer confirming his ownership was identified in the cited coverage. The sound conclusion is that Messi has been linked to the Ferrari in reports, but his ownership is unconfirmed.
How does Ronaldo’s Bugatti compare?
The Football Group’s 2025 article names Ronaldo’s Bugatti La Voiture Noire and puts its price at £12 million. Treat that as the publication’s reported figure, not an independently verified current appraisal. It is not directly comparable to the Ferrari’s documented 2016 auction result: one is a reported estimate attached to a celebrity-car story, while the other is a reported completed sale. Other lists illustrate how quickly the comparison changes when the model, date, currency, or valuation method changes:
| Report | Vehicle or collection | Reported figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sports Car Digest, 2016 | 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti | €32,075,200 ($35,711,359) | Reported auction sale price |
| The Football Group, July 2025 | Ronaldo’s Bugatti La Voiture Noire | £12 million | Publication’s reported price; not a verified current appraisal |
| GOAL, April 2022 | Ronaldo’s Bugatti Centodieci, Chiron and Veyron | $9.9 million, $2.15 million and $1.7 million, respectively | Secondary report of prices for three different cars |
| RTL.hu, February 2026 | Ronaldo’s Bugatti Centodieci | £8.5 million | List estimate; differs from other rankings |
| Carscoops, August 2026 | Three Bugattis shown in a garage post; Centodieci described as a ten-unit model | $10 million for the Centodieci; $35–40 million estimated for ten visible cars | Secondary report and collection estimate, not an audited valuation |

Why “most expensive footballers’ car” lists disagree
A list can rank a confirmed auction sale, an estimated market value, a reported purchase price, or a rumored ownership claim as though they were equivalent. They are not. Currency conversions, the date of a valuation, and whether the comparison covers one car or an entire collection also affect the result.
- Ownership: distinguish a car documented as owned by a player from one merely linked to them.
- Price basis: a completed sale is different from an estimate or a figure repeated in a celebrity-car list.
- Date and currency: a historical sale and a later estimate should not be presented as simultaneous market values.
- Scope: a single-car ranking cannot be compared with an estimate for several vehicles.
On the evidence cited here, the Ferrari’s 2016 sale price is the clearest transaction figure. Whether Messi bought it remains unconfirmed, and the reports about Ronaldo’s Bugattis use differing prices and valuation approaches.
