The Mercedes-Benz F 400 Carving was a research car shown at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show. Its signature feature was active camber control: in a corner, the outer wheels could tilt by up to 20 degrees, working with specially designed asymmetric tires to increase grip. DaimlerChrysler also used the car to demonstrate steer-by-wire, active suspension and fiber-optic lighting. Its headline performance figures were manufacturer claims, not independent test results established by the available sources.
What was the Mercedes-Benz F 400 Carving?
DaimlerChrysler presented the F 400 Carving at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001 as a research vehicle and rolling laboratory for chassis technology. The show’s archive likewise lists it as a study model on the Mercedes-Benz stand. It was a technology demonstrator, not a production model established by these sources. DaimlerChrysler’s 2001 annual report and the Tokyo Motor Show archive document its presentation and research role.
How did its wheels tilt in corners?
The car’s central experiment was active camber control. Camber is the inward or outward angle of a wheel when viewed from the front. In a turn, the F 400 could increase the camber angle of the outer wheels by as much as 20 degrees, according to DaimlerChrysler’s 2001 material. The aim was to keep the tire better oriented to the road under cornering forces.
The tire was designed around that movement. Its asymmetric tread had an inner area intended to provide high grip when the wheel was tilted in a corner, and an outer area intended to offer a more conventional contact surface for straight-line driving. The system was therefore a coordinated wheel-and-tire design, not simply an ordinary tire mounted at an unusual angle. DaimlerChrysler said the arrangement could transmit 30% greater lateral guiding forces than a conventional chassis with fixed camber and standard tires. The company’s F 400 Carving press material describes the claimed comparison.

What performance did Mercedes-Benz claim?
DaimlerChrysler’s figures describe its own claims from 2001; the available sources do not establish them as independent test findings. The comparison is meaningful only with the stated baseline or condition attached.
| Claim | What DaimlerChrysler said it referred to |
|---|---|
| Up to 20 degrees of wheel tilt | Maximum camber increase for the outer wheels in cornering, as described in the company’s 2001 material. |
| Up to 1.28 g maximum lateral acceleration | Maximum lateral acceleration attributed to the F 400 by DaimlerChrysler in 2001; a test protocol is not stated in the cited annual-report source. |
| About 25% higher lateral acceleration | The company’s comparison with contemporary sports cars in its 2001 material; named comparison cars and a test protocol are not stated there. |
| 30% greater lateral guiding forces | Claimed against a conventional chassis with fixed camber and standard tires. |
| More than five metres shorter emergency stopping distance | Claimed for emergency braking from 100 km/h; the cited press material does not establish an independent test or specify a comparison vehicle. |
The annual report also connected the car’s safety potential to ESP, Active Body Control and Sensotronic Brake Control. Those technologies broadened the demonstrator’s scope, but the published figures should not be read as a general production-car advantage or as a controlled comparison with a named rival concept.

What other technology did the F 400 demonstrate?
Electronic steering
The steering system did not rely on conventional mechanical steering technology. DaimlerChrysler’s 2001 annual report says, “The F 400 Carving is also equipped with a pioneering steering system that does not require conventional mechanical steering technology.” In the company’s description, sensors registered the driver’s steering input, microcomputers processed it, and an electrically driven steering gear carried out the command. The annual report and the press material describe the system.
Active suspension
An active hydropneumatic system adjusted both suspension and shock absorbers to suit road and driving conditions. This complemented the camber experiment by allowing the car’s chassis behavior to be actively managed rather than fixed.

Fiber-optic and cornering lights
Xenon lamps beneath the hood sent light to the headlamps through fiber-optic guides. Additional lamps mounted at the sides illuminated bends, addressing visibility as the vehicle turned.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did the F 400’s technology reach production?
The cited material establishes the F 400 as a research vehicle and describes its experimental systems; it does not establish that a particular F 400 feature directly entered a production model. DaimlerChrysler said the engineers drew on work from earlier concepts, including the F 200 Imagination and F 300 Life-Jet, particularly in safety and handling. That indicates continuity in the company’s research program, not proof of a direct production-car lineage.
