Choose the SLS AMG GT Final Edition if you want the 350-car farewell series, a choice of Coupé or Roadster, and a less track-biased specification. Choose the SLS AMG Black Series if your priority is the most aggressively engineered, highest-output version of these two and you specifically want a Coupé. Neither is automatically the better purchase. On a used SLS, condition, documented maintenance, originality, provenance, exact equipment and the price of the individual car matter more than the badge on the boot lid.

Mercedes-Benz Brazil quotes 591 PS for the Final Edition and 631 PS for the Black Series; Mercedes-Benz USA quotes a different 622-hp figure for U.S.-market Black Series cars. What the GT Final Edition represents
A genuine SLS send-off
The GT Final Edition was announced as a 350-car series, after which SLS production would end. That gives every authentic example a clear place in the model’s history: it is not merely a high-option GT, but the factory’s farewell to the SLS line. The 350-car figure covers both body styles, so it does not mean 350 Coupés plus another 350 Roadsters.

Mercedes-Benz’s Brazilian release describes the Final Edition as using the 6.3-liter V8 with 435 kW, or 591 PS. It also identifies specially developed Cup tires and exterior parts including a carbon-look hood, front splitter and fixed rear wing. Ceramic high-performance brakes appear in the release as optional AMG equipment, not universal standard equipment. Confirm the actual brake specification on the car you are considering rather than assuming that every Final Edition has the same hardware.
The Roadster changes the buying proposition
The Final Edition is the only one of these two choices documented in the cited material as being offered in both Coupé and Roadster form. That matters if your SLS will be used for touring, weekend routes or open-air driving. A Roadster is not simply a lower-priced alternative to a Coupé: its roof mechanism, weather seals, interior condition and use history become additional inspection points, and its specification should be judged on its own terms.
What the edition does not prove
Final Edition status does not by itself prove that a car is perfectly original, low-mileage or mechanically superior. The limited-series identity is valuable only when the VIN, factory records and equipment support it. A car with an incomplete history or non-original parts can be a weaker purchase than a well-documented, carefully maintained example of the other variant.

What makes the Black Series different
More than an engine tune
Mercedes-Benz Brazil’s announcement positions the Black Series as a GT3-inspired, track-focused SLS Coupé. It quotes 464 kW (631 PS) and 635 Nm from the 6.3-liter V8, with a claimed 0–100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds and a 317 km/h maximum speed. It also lists a 1,625 kg curb weight. Those are manufacturer figures for the Brazilian-market announcement, not an independent test result.
The same release describes a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, revised AMG RIDE CONTROL, an adjustable spring setup, wider tracks, carbon-fibre components and ceramic brakes as standard. Together, those changes indicate a more comprehensive performance brief than simply adding power. They affect how the car is set up, how it uses tires and brakes, and how carefully a prospective owner must check for track-related wear.

Do not mix regional power figures
Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2020 Black Series retrospective gives a different U.S.-market output of 622 hp and 468 lb-ft. It also says fewer than 200 SLS AMG Black Series cars were imported into the United States. That import count is not a global production number, and the U.S. power figures should not be silently substituted for the Brazilian release’s 631 PS and 635 Nm. When comparing two listings, record the market, units and source shown for each car.

Output is only one part of the experience
On the published numbers, the Black Series has the higher cited output: 631 PS versus 591 PS for the Final Edition. The Black Series release also provides acceleration and top-speed claims, while the cited Final Edition page does not provide directly comparable figures. That means you can state the Black Series’ published performance numbers, but you cannot fairly infer a measured acceleration gap from the available Final Edition material.
For everyday driving, the more important distinction may be calibration. Revised suspension, wider tracks and lightweight parts point toward sharper responses and greater commitment at high speed. The Final Edition’s road-oriented appeal comes from its combination of rarity, body-style choice and dramatic but less extreme specification. A buyer who will rarely use a circuit may value the latter balance more than an extra power figure.
Brake specification must be verified car by car
The equipment descriptions create an important inspection trap. The Final Edition announcement lists ceramic high-performance brakes among optional AMG equipment, whereas the Black Series announcement describes ceramic brakes as standard. Ask for the build sheet or factory specification and inspect the discs, calipers and pad condition. Do not price a Final Edition as though ceramic brakes are guaranteed, and do not assume that an advertised Black Series has escaped expensive consumable wear simply because the hardware was standard.

Track use has consequences
A Black Series may have been bought precisely for the work its chassis was designed to do. Look for evidence of repeated circuit use: uneven or accelerated tire wear, damaged wheels, brake heat checking, underbody contact, altered alignment settings and non-factory suspension or cooling changes. None of those signs automatically disqualifies a car, but each should be reflected in a specialist’s inspection and a written estimate of remedial work.
Rarity, provenance and what can actually be established
Final Edition: a stated 350-car series
The 350-example figure is the clearest production fact in this comparison and applies across Final Edition Coupé and Roadster models. Ask the seller to show how the car’s VIN, documentation and equipment identify it as one of those cars. A limited-edition plaque or a distinctive body part is not, on its own, proof of factory provenance.
Black Series: a U.S. import statistic, not a world total
The available U.S. retrospective says fewer than 200 Black Series cars were imported into the United States. That tells you about U.S. availability; it does not establish how many were built worldwide or how many exist in another country. For an imported car, verify its original market, subsequent registrations, title history and any conversion work.
Provenance should be specific
Useful provenance is a chain of documents, not a broad claim that the car is “rare.” Request the original sales paperwork where available, service invoices, ownership history, import documents, accident and title records, and evidence of factory options. Match the VIN across every record. If a seller cannot explain a gap, a repaint, a replacement panel or a change in wheels and suspension, treat that uncertainty as a valuation issue.
What current market evidence says about price
Final Edition auction data is informative but thin
DriveIndex reports eight verified Final Edition auction sales, with a reported median of $404,500 and a range of $297,000 to $803,000. Its page says the latest included sale was August 15, 2026. That is a small aggregator sample, not an appraisal. The wide spread shows why a headline median cannot predict the value of a particular car: mileage, body style, originality, region, documentation, equipment and sale conditions can all move the result substantially.

No matched Black Series range is established here
The available material does not provide a comparable current Black Series auction sample. Therefore, it would be misleading to claim that one variant is definitively worth more, depreciates less or offers a particular investment return. Use contemporaneous sales of cars with the same body style, market, mileage and specification when negotiating, rather than applying the Final Edition median to a Black Series or vice versa.
How to use a sale comparison properly
- Match the variant. Compare Final Edition with Final Edition and Black Series with Black Series before considering broader SLS results.
- Match the body style. A Coupé result is not a clean benchmark for a Roadster.
- Match condition and mileage. Documented service, originality and wear can matter more than a small difference in odometer reading.
- Match the market. Record whether the car was sold in the United States, Brazil, Europe or another market, and keep currency and tax treatment clear.
- Adjust for equipment. Confirm brakes, wheels, tires, carbon components and any factory options on the actual VIN.
Inspection checklist before you make an offer
1. Establish exactly what the car is
- Record the full VIN and ask for a factory build sheet or equivalent specification record.
- Confirm whether it is a Final Edition Coupé, Final Edition Roadster or Black Series Coupé.
- Verify the original market and check that the title, import and registration records agree.
- Photograph identifying labels, option codes, wheels, brakes and body panels before purchase.
2. Audit the maintenance file
- Ask for dated invoices rather than a verbal statement that servicing is “up to date.”
- Look for continuity in mileage, fluids, filters, ignition service and transmission work.
- Check whether tires, brake components, suspension parts and batteries were replaced with suitable parts and when.
- Identify long storage periods and ask how the car was recommissioned afterward.
3. Check for accident, paint and modification history
- Obtain accident and title-history reports for every market in which the car was registered.
- Use a paint-depth and body-alignment inspection to identify repaired or replaced panels.
- Check carbon-look or carbon-fibre pieces for cracks, repairs and mismatched finishes.
- List every non-factory modification, including exhaust, engine software, wheels, suspension, alignment and interior changes.
4. Inspect the mechanical systems cold and hot
- Start the engine cold and document warning lights, noises, smoke and idle quality.
- Test the dual-clutch transmission through all modes and note engagement, hesitation or warning messages.
- Inspect the AMG RIDE CONTROL system, springs, dampers, bushings and adjustable hardware for leaks or damage.
- Measure brake-disc condition and inspect calipers, pads and lines; ceramic components can be expensive to replace.
- Check cooling, air conditioning, electrical functions, active roof equipment on a Roadster, seals and drainage paths.
5. Commission an independent specialist
Have a marque specialist inspect the exact car and provide a written report with photographs and an estimate for immediate, near-term and deferred work. The inspection should be independent of the seller. Use that report to revise the offer or walk away; do not treat a clean-looking engine bay or a low claimed mileage as a substitute for a documented examination.

Choose the Final Edition when these priorities lead
- You want the SLS farewell series and can document its 350-car provenance.
- You want a Roadster option for open-air touring.
- You prefer a dramatic grand-tourer specification without making track capability the central requirement.
- You have found a better-maintained, more original Final Edition than the Black Series cars available to you.
Choose the Black Series when these priorities lead
- You want the higher cited output and the published 3.6-second, 317 km/h performance claims from the Brazilian-market announcement.
- You value revised suspension, wider tracks, lightweight components and a track-oriented setup.
- You specifically want a Coupé and accept the possibility of greater tire, brake and chassis wear.
- You have verified the car’s history and are prepared to maintain its performance hardware properly.
Choose neither particular car when the example is wrong
A neglected limited edition is not a bargain because it carries a rare badge. If one candidate has missing records, questionable originality, unresolved warning lights or a price that ignores required work, continue searching. A sound, properly documented example of the variant that better fits your use is usually the smarter purchase than a superficially cheaper car with an uncertain past.
A practical decision framework for two actual listings
When you have two cars in front of you, score the vehicles rather than arguing from model reputation. Use a written sheet with these categories:

Give condition and documentation the power to overturn a model-level preference. If the Final Edition is the emotional choice but the Black Series has substantially stronger records and a more accurate specification, the Black Series may be the safer purchase. If the Black Series has track wear and the Final Edition is a documented, original Roadster that you will actually tour in, the Final Edition may deliver more of what you want even with less output.
Ownership and investment caveats
Rarity and auction interest do not guarantee appreciation. No comparable evidence here establishes insurance, maintenance, storage or parts costs for either variant, and there is no verified basis for promising a return on investment. Budget separately for routine servicing, tires, brakes, battery and storage, then keep a reserve for specialist repairs. A purchase that only works if the car rises in value is exposed to risks that the available sales data cannot quantify.
Also distinguish purchase price from the cost of making a car correct. A low-priced example may need tires, brake work, suspension attention, paint correction, electronics repair or documentation recovery. Add those estimates to the transaction price before comparing it with a more expensive car that needs little immediate work.

The SLS AMG GT Final Edition is the more convincing choice for a collector-driver who wants the factory farewell story, the possibility of a Roadster and a specification that can serve road use as well as display. The SLS AMG Black Series is the one to buy when the central objective is the most track-focused engineering and highest cited output of the pair, and when a Coupé-only car suits your plans.
Make the final decision on the individual VIN, not the brochure. Verify the edition, inspect the chassis and brakes, read the maintenance file, compare only genuinely similar sales and obtain a written specialist report. That process matters more than declaring one SLS universally superior.
