What the SLS AMG GT Final Edition is
Mercedes-Benz announced the SLS AMG GT Final Edition on 27 November 2013 as a limited series of 350 cars, offered as both Coupé and Roadster. The manufacturer’s launch announcement described a 6.3-litre AMG V8 producing 435 kW and highlighted carbon-fibre body details and specially developed optional Cup tyres. Those are manufacturer launch claims and should be treated as the starting specification, not as proof that every surviving car still has its original equipment.

Mercedes-Benz Japan separately announced an allocation of 25 cars for Japan. That is a market allocation, not a revision of the worldwide 350-car total. A Japanese-market car, an imported car and a car sold elsewhere can have different documents, equipment markings and recall procedures, so establish the market in which the car was originally delivered.

How to verify a genuine Final Edition
Start with the VIN and factory records
Ask for a clear photograph of the 17-character VIN and compare it with the VIN on the chassis, registration documents, title, maintenance booklet and every major invoice. Request original build or specification documentation, delivery paperwork and any market-specific certificate supplied with the car. The seller should permit a Mercedes-Benz representative or qualified specialist to confirm the VIN and available service or campaign history.

Reconcile the car’s identity before discussing cosmetic details. A Final Edition claim that cannot be supported by VIN-linked documentation remains unproven, even if the car has the expected paint, carbon-fibre parts, badges or wheels.
Check the equipment against the original specification
- Compare the physical car with the factory specification and build documentation.
- Identify whether the car is a Coupé or Roadster and check that body-specific components are present and correctly fitted.
- Record carbon-fibre panels and trim, wheels, seats, brakes, tyres and electronic options rather than assuming they are standard on every car.
- Look for non-factory exhaust, suspension, software, wheel, body or interior changes. Modifications are not automatically disqualifying, but they affect originality, inspection scope, insurance and future parts decisions.
Use provenance as a chain, not a single document
Build a timeline from delivery to the present: country and date of first registration, each owner, mileage at every transfer, storage periods, accident or insurance events, imported or exported dates, and major repairs. A clean-looking car with an unexplained mileage or ownership gap deserves the same scrutiny as a visibly modified car.
What service history an SLS AMG should have
Request the complete document set
- Maintenance booklet, with every entry legible and dated.
- Original or itemised invoices showing mileage, work performed, parts and fluids where available.
- Inspection reports, roadworthiness tests and emissions records applicable to the car’s market.
- Records of major repairs or replacement components, including transmission, brakes, suspension, cooling, electrical and bodywork.
- Evidence of software updates, campaign work and diagnostic findings.
- Ownership, title, registration, import and storage records.
The booklet is useful evidence, but a fresh stamp does not repair a missing period in the chronology. Match each invoice to the mileage and date on surrounding documents, and ask who performed the work. Dealer maintenance, a recognised independent AMG specialist and competent general servicing have different evidentiary weight; the important point is that the work is identifiable and technically credible.

Build a date-and-mileage chronology

Understand the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance
The 2015 SLS GT operator’s manual tells owners to observe the maintenance booklet and states that safety-related work, service and maintenance, repairs, modifications and electronic work should be performed at an authorised Mercedes-Benz Center. The manual is a model-year reference, not a substitute for the individual car’s booklet or a current dealer record. A buyer may also use an independent qualified specialist with relevant SLS experience; ask that shop to document its qualifications and diagnostic capability.
Commission an independent pre-purchase inspection
Arrange the inspection before committing to the purchase or making a non-refundable deposit. Give the inspector the VIN and all available records in advance. Request photographs, measured results, a written list of immediate and near-term work, and current estimates from the inspecting shop. A generic performance-car inspection is not enough: the workshop should be comfortable with Mercedes-AMG systems, the SLS’s transmission and its electronic diagnostics.
Identity, provenance and originality
- Confirm VIN consistency at every accessible location and in the diagnostic system.
- Verify Final Edition documentation and original specification.
- Check title, registration, import and accident history.
- Inspect for non-factory wiring, fasteners, body panels, paint thickness variations and evidence of structural repair.
- List modifications and determine whether original parts are included.
Body, doors and underside
Inspect the car in daylight and on a lift. Look for paint mismatch, uneven panel gaps, corrosion, scrapes, impact marks, fluid residue and repairs to the underbody. Autocar’s used-car guidance specifically recommends checking beneath the car and the lower edges of the gullwing doors for damage. Confirm that doors open, close, latch and seal correctly without abnormal resistance. On a Roadster, inspect the roof fabric or panels, seals, latches, hinges and hydraulic or electric operation through a complete cycle.

Engine, cooling and diagnostics
- Insist on a genuinely cold start where possible; record starting behaviour, noises, smoke, warning messages and idle quality.
- Inspect for oil, coolant and other leaks, damaged hoses, evidence of overheating and poor previous repairs.
- Scan all relevant control modules for stored and pending fault codes, not just the engine computer.
- Test battery condition, charging voltage, cooling fans, lights and other electrical systems.
- Compare diagnostic findings with the service chronology and ask for explanations of recurring or recently cleared faults.
These are inspection requests, not claims that every SLS has a particular engine or electrical defect. The report should separate observed faults from normal wear and from items that could not be tested.
Transmission and road test
Review transmission service records and software-update documentation. Have the specialist assess operation when cold and fully warm, including take-off, low-speed manoeuvres, manual and automatic modes, full-throttle shifts where safe, reverse selection and parking. Autocar reported that the earlier SLS gearbox was criticised for slow shifts and that a software update was offered in 2013. Confirm whether that update applies to the individual VIN and whether it was completed; do not assume every car needs it or that an update cures every shift concern.
Tyres, brakes, suspension and wheels
- Record each tyre’s brand, model, size, production date, tread depth, wear pattern, damage and load or speed rating.
- Check wheel straightness, cracks, kerb damage, corrosion and correct fitment.
- Measure brake-disc and pad condition and inspect calipers, hoses and heat damage.
- Establish whether the car has steel or carbon-ceramic brakes and verify that replacement parts are priced for that exact system.
- Inspect dampers, bushes, joints, steering components and ride-height or alignment evidence.
Autocar notes that tyres may wear quickly and that carbon-ceramic replacements can be particularly expensive. Treat those comments as reasons to measure the car in front of you, not as a universal failure forecast.

Equipment and cabin functions
Operate both doors, locks, windows, mirrors, seats, seat heating or ventilation where fitted, climate control, infotainment, instruments, parking aids, cameras and every warning-light function. Confirm that keys, manuals, tools, luggage pieces and charging or maintenance accessories promised in the sale are present. A missing trim part or electronic module can be expensive or difficult to source even when the car drives well.
Recall and campaign checks must use the individual VIN
For a US-market car, NHTSA provides searches by VIN, licence plate or year, make and model and states that safety recalls do not expire. Mercedes-Benz USA’s recall portal requests a 17-digit VIN and does not provide recall information for non-US vehicles. Use the authority and Mercedes-Benz market portal applicable to the car’s country of delivery, especially for an imported SLS.
- Copy the VIN directly from the car and documents; do not rely on a typed seller advertisement.
- Run the VIN through the relevant national recall authority and manufacturer portal.
- Save or print the result with the search date.
- Ask a Mercedes-Benz dealer or qualified specialist to confirm whether campaigns are open, completed or not applicable.
- Put any outstanding campaign work in writing before purchase and establish who will pay for it.
A model-year or internet search cannot establish an individual car’s open-campaign status. Recall completion is separate from routine maintenance and from repairs recommended by an inspection.

Ownership costs: use historical figures as reference points, not a quote
The published figures available for this model come from Autocar’s historical UK used-car guide, published around 2020. It reported approximately £500 for an A service, up to £1,000 for a more comprehensive B service, about £250 per tyre and at least £8,000 for a carbon-ceramic caliper-and-disc replacement set. The same guide said to change engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles. These are UK estimates from that period, not current prices for the US, Europe or another market, and they should not be converted into a present-day annual average.

Build a car-specific budget
Ask the inspecting shop for three totals: work needed immediately for safe and reliable use, work reasonably expected within the next 12 months, and longer-term condition-based exposure. Add routine servicing, tyres, brake wear, insurance, taxes, storage, transport, import work and unexpected repairs as separate lines. A documented car with fresh tyres and strong brakes can be financially safer than a cheaper example with a gap in records, worn carbon-ceramic hardware or deferred bodywork.
No verified published dataset establishes an average annual SLS GT Final Edition ownership cost or a model-wide component failure rate. Do not use an invented average to justify a purchase price or an insurance budget.

Do not use historical asking prices as a present valuation. The useful comparison is the cost and risk of each verified car after current inspection estimates.
A practical buying sequence
- Request the VIN and document pack. Obtain the maintenance booklet, invoices, build or specification records, title and registration history before travelling.
- Screen the chronology. Mark every date and mileage, identify gaps and ask targeted questions about repairs, storage and ownership changes.
- Verify Final Edition status. Have a Mercedes-Benz representative or qualified specialist reconcile the VIN, market documentation and original equipment.
- Run recall checks. Use the authority and manufacturer portal for the relevant country and retain dated results.
- Book an independent inspection. Choose an SLS/AMG-capable workshop, provide records in advance and require photographs and written estimates.
- Test the car correctly. Arrange a cold start, full diagnostic scan, lift inspection and road test when cold and warm; include a full Roadster roof cycle where applicable.
- Price the findings. Separate immediate safety work, near-term maintenance, consumables and optional cosmetic items. Obtain current local quotes.
- Negotiate or walk away. Negotiate from documented work and costs. If identity, mileage, structural history or major mechanical condition cannot be established, the correct decision may be not to buy.
- Record the handover. Put the VIN, keys, manuals, original parts, open campaigns and agreed repairs in the purchase paperwork.
Red flags that deserve a pause
- VIN discrepancies, blurred identification plates or a seller who will not permit a VIN check.
- A Final Edition claim supported only by badges, carbon trim, paint or an online listing.
- A booklet full of stamps but no invoices, mileage evidence or explanation of who did the work.
- Recent “service” immediately before sale with no itemised scope or diagnostic report.
- Unexplained mileage, ownership or storage gaps.
- Freshly cleared warning lights, a battery disconnected before inspection or refusal of a cold start.
- Transmission behaviour that changes materially between cold and warm operation.
- Tyres of mixed specification, significant wear or unknown age.
- Carbon-ceramic brakes whose remaining life is asserted but not measured or documented.
- Roadster roof operation that is not demonstrated fully.
- Pressure to waive an independent inspection or to pay before records are supplied.
Bottom-line buying standard
Buy the SLS AMG GT Final Edition whose identity is VIN-supported, specification is documented, service chronology is coherent and inspection findings are financially understood. The 350-car series and its 435 kW launch specification make provenance important, but rarity does not remove ordinary used-car risks. A complete paper trail, VIN-specific recall result and independent SLS-capable inspection are more valuable than a fresh stamp, attractive carbon trim or a low asking price. Set the budget from current local estimates for the actual tyres, brakes, transmission, body and equipment on the car you are considering.
