Choose the S560 if V8 power and quicker acceleration define the S-Class experience you want. Choose the S450 if the V6 already provides enough performance and its slightly better published fuel economy matters more. In either case, a well-documented, correctly equipped car with a clean inspection is a better buy than a neglected example wearing the preferred badge.

What separates the S450 from the S560?
The central difference is the engine. The 2018 S450 uses a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo, while the S560 uses a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo. Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. specifications give the S450 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, versus 463 horsepower and 516 lb-ft for the S560. That is a 101-hp and 147-lb-ft advantage for the V8, before considering equipment or drivetrain.

How much quicker is the S560 in normal driving?
The S560’s advantage is not merely a specification-sheet number. An extra 147 lb-ft of published torque gives the V8 more reserve for freeway merges, passing and steep grades, while the shorter claimed 0–60-mph times make the car feel more effortless when you use the throttle. The S450’s 5.0-second RWD estimate and 4.8-second 4MATIC estimate are still rapid for a full-size luxury sedan, so the V6 is not a slow or inadequate version.
Think of the choice as character rather than basic capability. The S450 delivers the quiet, smooth and substantial S-Class experience with performance that exceeds ordinary traffic demands. The S560 adds stronger, more immediate thrust and a V8 sound and response that some buyers consider the main reason to choose this generation. If you rarely accelerate hard, the practical difference may be small; if effortless power is part of the appeal, the S560’s margin is obvious.

The S560’s extra output also changes how much throttle you need when the car is loaded with passengers or luggage. That does not make it more suitable for every buyer: the heavier V8 car weighs 4,731 pounds in rear-drive form and 4,850 pounds with 4MATIC, compared with 4,553 and 4,685 pounds for the corresponding S450 versions. The figures describe the cars on paper, not a promise that every used example will feel identical after years of tire wear or maintenance.
Fuel economy: the S450 has a modest edge
Mercedes-Benz’s 2018 published estimates favor the S450 in both drivetrain configurations. The difference is one mpg in the city, highway and combined figures shown below. These are model-year estimates, not a guarantee of what a particular used car will achieve.

The estimates come from Mercedes-Benz’s 2017 guide for the 2018 model year; see the official guide. Your fuel cost will depend on annual mileage, fuel prices, traffic, weather, tire condition, driving style and whether the car remains in its original specification. The published one-mpg difference is useful for comparing the trims, but it is not a verified lifetime ownership-cost difference.
Do not use the table to predict a precise fuel bill for a particular listing. A car with underinflated tires, incorrect wheel-and-tire fitment, a dragging brake or neglected maintenance can perform differently from its original test configuration. Compare the EPA-style figures consistently, then use your own driving pattern to judge whether the S450’s small advantage is worth prioritizing over the S560’s power.
RWD or 4MATIC: decide for your roads
Both the S450 and S560 could be ordered with rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Select the actual drivetrain according to climate, tires, roads and personal preference rather than assuming a trim always includes one system.
When RWD makes sense
- You live where snow and ice are uncommon and can fit appropriate summer or all-season tires.
- You prefer the lower listed curb weight of the rear-drive configuration.
- You want to avoid paying for hardware you will not use.
- You want to compare cars with the simpler drivetrain configuration, while still recognizing that both versions have substantial electronic and suspension systems.
When 4MATIC makes sense
- You regularly drive on snow, ice, steep wet roads or gravel where additional traction is useful.
- You want the quicker manufacturer estimate shown for each 4MATIC version, recognizing that real-world results depend on tires and conditions.
- You are buying a car already configured for your region and do not want to compromise seasonal usability.
All-wheel drive cannot overcome worn tires, poor alignment or unsafe speed. Inspect the tires, confirm matching sizes and brands where required, and check the drivetrain in the VIN/build information. A seller may describe a car as “fully loaded” without clearly identifying 4MATIC, so verify the equipment code and inspect the vehicle identification label and records.

Equipment and model-year context
Trim badges do not tell the whole equipment story. Mercedes-Benz’s 2019 S-Class Sedan Quick Reference Guide highlights Nappa leather and 19-inch wheels as S560 standard-equipment items. The same guide lists shared S-Class features including dual 12.3-inch displays, 64-color ambient lighting, smartphone integration and a Lane Tracking package. Packages, production changes, market differences and previous owners can alter what is actually installed.
Use the 2019 S-Class Sedan Quick Reference Guide as a reference, then verify the candidate’s VIN build sheet, window sticker or dealer records. Inspect the seats, wheel finish, displays, cameras, driver-assistance sensors and interior trim in person. A car advertised as an S560 may have optional equipment missing from another S560, while a heavily optioned S450 can have many of the same comfort features.
The 2019 lineup also included a separate S560e plug-in hybrid. It is not the gasoline S560 described in the engine, fuel-economy or acceleration tables here. Confirm the powertrain from the VIN and under-hood inspection before applying any specification. The same caution applies to listings that mix sedan information with coupe, cabriolet, Maybach or AMG descriptions.
Equipment verification is especially important when two cars have similar asking prices. Check whether the advertised driver-assistance functions are present, whether both screens work without dead pixels or intermittent warnings, and whether the wheels and tires match the factory configuration. A missing option is not automatically a defect, but an undisclosed mismatch can affect what the car is worth to you.
Size, suspension and cabin practicality
Engine choice does not create a meaningful difference in exterior dimensions for these sedans. The 2018 guide lists the same length, wheelbase, height and width for the S450 and S560. Mercedes-Benz’s 2020 technical page lists the S560 sedan at 206.9 inches long with a 124.6-inch wheelbase and a 16.3-cubic-foot trunk. It also describes independent multi-link suspension with air springs front and rear.
Those dimensions explain the S-Class’s priorities: a large rear cabin, long-distance comfort and a substantial road footprint. They also matter when inspecting a used car. Check the underside for curb or lift damage, measure tire wear across each axle and confirm that the air suspension raises and lowers evenly without warning messages or a corner sitting low after the car has been parked.

If you are undecided, drive comparable examples back to back on the same route. Pay attention to throttle response at ordinary speeds, transmission smoothness, brake feel, road noise and the condition of the seats and controls. A short drive cannot establish reliability, but it can reveal whether the S450 already satisfies you or whether the S560’s reserve is central to the ownership experience.
How to buy either trim safely
1. Decode the 17-character VIN
Confirm model year, sedan body style, engine, drivetrain and factory equipment from the specific vehicle identification number. Do not rely on a seller’s title, online listing or a replacement badge. A VIN build report can reveal whether an advertised S560 is actually an S560e, whether it has 4MATIC and which options were fitted.

2. Check open recalls before negotiating
Enter the vehicle’s 17-character VIN in Mercedes-Benz USA’s recall lookup. Mercedes-Benz identifies its VIN tool as the most complete and current source for applicable U.S. recall information. Ask the seller or dealer to document the campaign number and completion date, and verify that the repair is closed rather than merely scheduled.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing, Safety Recall Report 18V-407, lists specific 2018 S450 and S560 vehicles and production applicability. That filing is a reason to perform a VIN check; it does not mean every 2018 car of either trim is affected.
3. Demand service records, not assurances
Request invoices, maintenance printouts and dates and mileage for major work. Look for consistent oil services, brake and tire replacement, suspension repairs, cooling-system work and repairs to electronic or driver-assistance systems. Gaps do not automatically disqualify a car, but they should change the price and increase the inspection burden.
The 2018 S-Class operator manual recommends oil changes at a qualified specialist workshop and specifies different oil approvals and fill capacities by configuration. Use the 2018 S-Class Sedan Operator’s Manual for the applicable requirements rather than guessing from engine size. Record the mileage and date of the last service, and ask which oil specification was used.
4. Arrange a Mercedes-Benz specialist inspection
Have an independent specialist scan every control module, inspect the air suspension, check for fluid leaks, evaluate brakes and tires, test the battery and charging system, and road-test the car from cold start through highway speed. Ask for a written report with photographs and estimated repair priorities.

Tell the inspector which features the listing promises so they can verify them. A scan should not replace a physical inspection: electronic faults, worn tires, leaking struts, uneven ride height and prior body repairs can all affect the purchase even when no warning light is illuminated. If the seller refuses an independent inspection, treat that as a serious buying risk rather than assuming the car is sound.
5. Test every expensive feature
- Start the car cold and watch for warning messages, rough running or unusual smoke.
- Operate both 12.3-inch displays, navigation, smartphone integration, cameras and parking sensors.
- Test seat adjustments, heating, ventilation, memory functions, ambient lighting and rear controls.
- Cycle the air suspension and listen for compressor or strut noises.
- Check adaptive cruise, lane assistance and blind-spot warnings on a safe road; do not treat a missing feature as a fault if the VIN shows it was not installed.
- Inspect wheels for bends and the body for paint mismatch, corrosion, flood evidence and uneven panel gaps.
- Look beneath the car for fluid residue and inspect the engine bay for damaged covers, non-factory wiring or signs of poor repairs.
6. Compare the complete cars
When an S450 and S560 are close in age and mileage, compare their documented maintenance, accident and title history, tire age, warning lights, inspection findings and option content. A cheaper car that immediately needs air-suspension, tire, brake and electronic repairs can cost more than a better-maintained example with the preferred engine.
Put the results in writing before making an offer: purchase price, known defects, open campaigns, tires, brakes, next scheduled service and any option you consider essential. This prevents the V8 badge from overshadowing a large maintenance backlog and prevents a lower-priced S450 from being judged only on its engine.
Reliability and ownership cost: what cannot be claimed
There is no verified like-for-like reliability rate, failure-rate study or repair-cost comparison for used S450 versus S560 sedans in the cited material. It is therefore not accurate to say that the V6 is inherently reliable, that the V8 is inherently troublesome, or that either trim is cheap to own.

Real expenses vary with age, mileage, prior repairs, climate, storage, maintenance quality, local labor rates, parts prices and the specific equipment fitted. The two engines also share many vehicle systems, including complex electronics, air suspension and driver-assistance hardware. A trim-level stereotype cannot replace a pre-purchase inspection and records review.
The safest answer to “Which is cheaper to own?” is that the individual car determines the near-term bill. A documented S560 with recent tires, brakes and suspension work may be a better financial decision than an S450 with deferred maintenance. Conversely, if both cars are equally sound, the S450’s published one-mpg advantage may matter to a high-mileage driver, while the S560’s performance may justify its fuel tradeoff to a different buyer. The S560 is the enthusiast’s choice: its 4.0-liter biturbo V8, 463 horsepower, 516 lb-ft and quicker manufacturer acceleration estimates provide a clear performance advantage. For a used purchase, the final decision should be made between two specific cars, not two badges. Confirm the VIN, drivetrain, equipment and recall status; review service records; pay for a specialist inspection; and buy the example with the strongest evidence of careful ownership.
