W221, W222 and W223 are three very different interpretations of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The W221 (2005–2013) introduced the modern car’s major electronic-assistance systems; the W222 (2013–2020) added a lighter, more rigid body, predictive suspension and a more integrated luxury cabin; and the W223 (2020–present in Mercedes-Benz’s historical timeline) turns the S-Class into a software-driven flagship with second-generation MBUX, OLED displays, over-the-air updates and optional rear-wheel steering.
There is no universally best generation. A well-documented W221 can be the value choice, W222 is the chassis-and-comfort middle ground, and W223 is the clear technology leader. Engine availability, wheelbase, safety equipment and infotainment differ by market, trim and model year, so identify the exact car by VIN before treating any feature as standard.

The three S-Class generations at a glance
| Generation | Production period | Defining technology | Chassis and body highlights | Powertrain direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| W221 (221 series) | 2005–2013 | COMAND-era interface; DISTRONIC PLUS; PRE-SAFE Brake; Night View Assist; Lane Keeping Assist | Cd 0.26; first S-Class generation to expand electronic driver assistance across the range | Petrol and diesel engines; 2009 S 400 HYBRID; four-cylinder S 250 CDI added in 2011 |
| W222 (222 series) | 2013–2020 | Intelligent Drive; all-LED lighting; ENERGIZING comfort functions | Third-generation aluminum-hybrid bodyshell; ROAD SURFACE SCAN and MAGIC BODY CONTROL; Mercedes-Maybach derivative from 2014 | Broader turbocharged and hybrid range, varying by market and year |
| W223 (223 series) | 2020–present in the cited Mercedes-Benz history | Second-generation MBUX; up to five displays; OLED and 3D driver display; OTA updates | Optional rear-axle steering up to 10 degrees; optional rear-seat airbag; active ambient-light warnings | Turbocharged mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid systems; updated 2026 S 580e rated at 576 hp combined |
The dates describe the core sedan generations, not every market’s registration year. Facelifts, long-wheelbase versions, Maybach derivatives and regional powertrains can overlap, so a late W221 or early W222 may have equipment that is not representative of the generation as a whole.

From individual assistance systems to Intelligent Drive
W221 established the electronic-assistance template that later S-Classes expanded. Optional DISTRONIC PLUS could maintain a gap and brake the car to a standstill. PRE-SAFE Brake offered autonomous partial braking from 2006 and autonomous emergency braking from 2009. Active Night View Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and blind-spot assistance became available as the generation matured.
#1 Best Overall
W222 grouped more of those functions under Mercedes-Benz’s “Intelligent Drive” approach. A US-market 2017 equipment summary listed Active Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, Traffic Sign Assist, PRE-SAFE and PRE-SAFE Sound as standard equipment. Exact standard or optional status still depends on country, trim and model year; a 2013 car should not be assumed to have the same package as a 2017 example.
A stronger, lighter body
Mercedes-Benz describes the W222 as using a third-generation aluminum-hybrid bodyshell. The company reported a 50 percent higher light-alloy design quality rating than its predecessor when measured across torsional rigidity, weight and vehicle size. That statement is a design comparison, not a promise that every W222 weighs 50 percent less than every W221.
The body structure supports a quieter, more controlled luxury-car feel, but a buyer should still inspect accident repairs, corrosion, suspension components and service records. The generation label alone cannot establish the condition of an individual vehicle.
Predictive suspension becomes a headline feature
W222’s MAGIC BODY CONTROL uses ROAD SURFACE SCAN to look ahead for road imperfections and adjust the suspension before the wheels reach them. This is the major ride-technology distinction from W221. It is designed to smooth larger surface changes, not to eliminate every impact or compensate for worn components, incorrect ride height or damaged cameras.
The cabin becomes more cohesive
W222 replaced the W221’s earlier mix of bulbs and electronic modules with all-LED lighting. It also introduced ENERGIZING comfort functions, which coordinate available seat, climate, lighting, massage and audio settings into broader comfort programs. Availability varies by specification, so check the build sheet rather than assuming every W222 has every ENERGIZING function.
Maybach returns as a W222 derivative
From 2014, the 222 series was offered as a Mercedes-Maybach derivative with a 7.9-inch wheelbase extension. That is a separate long-wheelbase luxury configuration within the W222 family, not a fourth S-Class generation. Its rear-cabin packaging, trim and equipment should be evaluated as a distinct model when comparing cars.
What changed from W222 to W223?
MBUX replaces the COMAND-era architecture
W223 is the software-defined step. Its second-generation MBUX system becomes the central interaction layer instead of treating infotainment as a mostly separate screen and controller. Mercedes-Benz specifies up to five displays, including OLED technology, plus a 3D driver display that can present depth-aware information.

That can add functions or improve behavior without replacing hardware, but it also means software version, subscription status and regional activation can affect what a used car actually does. Ask for update history and verify current functions in the vehicle, not only in an old sales listing.
Assistance warnings move into the lighting design
W223 integrates active ambient lighting with assistance warnings. Instead of relying only on a dashboard message or audible alert, the cabin lighting can provide a visual cue linked to a detected situation. The system is part of a broader sensor-and-software integration strategy and should not be confused with a guarantee that the car will avoid every hazard.
Rear passengers gain new safety and maneuverability options
An optional rear-seat airbag is available on W223. It is a notable change for a flagship sedan because the system is designed around the rear occupant and the front-seat geometry. Equipment remains option- and market-dependent.
Optional rear-axle steering can turn the rear wheels by up to 10 degrees. At low speed, the rear wheels steer opposite the fronts to reduce the apparent turning circle; at higher speed, the system can steer in the same direction to support stability. The practical result is easier maneuvering for a long-wheelbase sedan, but it adds another electrically controlled chassis system to inspect and maintain.

The 2020 launch car and a 2026 update share the W223 designation but are not identical. The 2026 update adds MB.OS, a MBUX Virtual Assistant, up to 15 airbags and a 576-hp S 580e plug-in-hybrid system. Those additions illustrate why the model year matters as much as the chassis code when comparing software, safety and powertrains.

Technology and interface: which generation feels most modern?
| Area | W221 | W222 | W223 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infotainment | COMAND-era controls and displays | More integrated dual-screen-era cabin and Intelligent Drive presentation | Second-generation MBUX with multiple displays, OLED options and 3D driver visualization |
| Driver assistance | DISTRONIC PLUS, PRE-SAFE Brake, Night View Assist and Lane Keeping Assist introduced or expanded during the run | Systems consolidated under Intelligent Drive; 2017 US summary included several active-safety features as standard | More tightly integrated sensor, display and software behavior; active ambient-light warnings and OTA capability |
| Software updates | Primarily workshop-based module updates | More electronic integration, but no equivalent headline OTA scope stated | More than 50 electronic components eligible for OTA updates, according to Mercedes-Benz |
| Lighting | Conventional and evolving electronic lighting, depending on year | All-LED lighting replaces traditional bulbs | Advanced display and ambient-light integration, with equipment varying by trim |
Choose W223 if the interface, display quality and updateability are priorities. W222 is the transition generation for buyers who want modern assistance and lighting without the full software-heavy architecture of the newest car. W221’s controls are older, but its later assistance packages still represent a substantial step beyond a conventional luxury sedan of the same period.
Ride, body and maneuverability
W221: the electronic-assistance pioneer
The W221’s Cd 0.26 drag coefficient reflects an aerodynamic body designed for efficient high-speed cruising. Its central chassis story is less about predictive road scanning and more about introducing electronic systems that could monitor traffic, lane position and driver attention.
W222: the ride-focused middle generation
W222 combines the aluminum-hybrid bodyshell with MAGIC BODY CONTROL and ROAD SURFACE SCAN. For buyers who put ride isolation ahead of interface novelty, this is the generation with the clearest hardware-focused comfort argument.

W223: easier low-speed control
W223’s rear-axle steering addresses a common S-Class inconvenience: maneuvering a large sedan in tight streets and parking structures. The maximum 10-degree figure is an option capability, not a specification for every W223. Confirm whether the car has the system and whether it is functioning correctly during a pre-purchase inspection.
Powertrains: the direction of travel
W221 introduced production lithium-ion hybrid technology
The 2009 S 400 HYBRID was described by Mercedes-Benz as the first standard-production passenger car with a lithium-ion battery. W221 otherwise spans conventional petrol and diesel engines, and Mercedes-Benz added the four-cylinder S 250 CDI in 2011. Engine names and emissions equipment vary by region, so importing a specification from one market can lead to incorrect parts or servicing assumptions.
W222 broadened turbocharged and hybrid choices
Across its 2013–2020 run, W222 offered a wider selection of turbocharged and hybrid variants. The exact engine, transmission and emissions configuration depends on model year and market. Compare the VIN build sheet, registration documents and manufacturer manual rather than relying on a badge alone.
W223 adds mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids
W223 continues with turbocharged mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid choices. Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 update lists the S 580e plug-in hybrid at 576 hp combined. That output is specific to the updated model and should not be applied to earlier S 580e versions or to every W223 powertrain.

Safety progression by generation
- W221: DISTRONIC PLUS, PRE-SAFE Brake, lane keeping, blind-spot assistance and Night View Assist expanded during the generation. Autonomous partial braking arrived from 2006, with autonomous emergency braking from 2009.
- W222: Intelligent Drive integrated more assistance functions. The 2017 US equipment summary lists Active Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, Traffic Sign Assist, PRE-SAFE and PRE-SAFE Sound as standard for that specification.
- W223: Adds the option of a rear-seat airbag, active ambient-light warnings and broader software-and-sensor integration. The 2026 update lists up to 15 airbags, but that figure belongs to the updated specification, not every W223.
Safety availability is especially sensitive to country and model year. A used-car advertisement that says “W223” or “W222” is not enough to establish which sensors, airbags or assistance packages are installed.
Which generation is best to buy?
The answer depends on what you are buying the car to do and how much specification risk you will accept.
Choose W221 when acquisition cost and simpler technology matter most
- It is the oldest generation and generally the least expensive to acquire, although actual prices depend on market, mileage, condition, trim and service history.
- Later cars can include meaningful assistance technology, including autonomous emergency braking and lane support.
- The COMAND-era cabin is easier to understand than a screen-dominated W223, but it is visibly older and offers less updateability.
- Prioritize a complete maintenance file, correct suspension operation and evidence that electronic warnings have been diagnosed rather than merely cleared.
Choose W222 for the balance of ride technology and age
- MAGIC BODY CONTROL and ROAD SURFACE SCAN are the generation’s signature comfort features.
- The aluminum-hybrid bodyshell and all-LED lighting mark a substantial structural and cabin step over W221.
- It avoids the newest generation’s full dependence on multiple displays and OTA software while still offering a modern assistance suite in later years.
- Check whether the specific car has the desired Intelligent Drive, ENERGIZING and long-wheelbase equipment; none should be inferred solely from the chassis code.
Choose W223 for the newest interface, software and maneuverability
- Second-generation MBUX, OLED screens, a 3D driver display and OTA capability make it the technology leader.
- Rear-axle steering can make a large sedan easier to place in tight spaces.
- Later updates add MB.OS, a MBUX Virtual Assistant and newer hybrid and airbag configurations.
- Expect the greatest dependence on software versions, sensors, screens and option coding. A VIN-specific diagnostic scan and an up-to-date manual are essential before purchase.
Depreciation follows the same broad order—W221 oldest, W222 in the middle, W223 newest—but no reliable price comparison can be made without a country, currency, mileage, body style, engine and condition. Treat online asking prices as market snapshots, not generation-wide values.
How to verify a used S-Class before buying
- Record the VIN and exact model year. Confirm the chassis series, wheelbase, engine, transmission and market specification.
- Match the equipment to factory documentation. Use the manufacturer’s owner portal and the manual for that model and release date; Mercedes-Benz provides downloadable manuals, including documentation for a 2018 W222 and a V223 MBUX-equipped car.
- Test every electronic system. Operate the displays, driver-assistance menus, cameras, lighting, seat functions, climate controls and, where fitted, rear-axle steering.
- Inspect the suspension and body. Look for incorrect ride height, warning messages, uneven tire wear, accident repairs and evidence of water intrusion. Predictive suspension cannot compensate for damaged hardware.
- Check software and service records. For W223, establish the current software state and whether advertised OTA functions are active in that region. For all generations, confirm that recalls and campaign work were completed.
- Use qualified specialist support. Mercedes-Benz’s owner information directs maintenance toward qualified specialist workshops. A pre-purchase inspection should include chassis, high-voltage hybrid components where applicable and electronic fault memory.
Common comparison mistakes
- Assuming a chassis code defines one fixed car: facelifts, options and annual updates can change the equipment dramatically.
- Applying a 2026 W223 feature list to a 2020 launch car: MB.OS, the MBUX Virtual Assistant, up to 15 airbags and the 576-hp S 580e belong to the updated specification.
- Calling every W222 a MAGIC BODY CONTROL car: verify the suspension option and its operation.
- Comparing engine badges across countries: the same name can represent different emissions hardware, hybrid systems or output depending on market.
- Judging technology without considering support: newer screens and software can improve capability but increase the number of modules that must be diagnosed and kept current.
Bottom line
W221 is the pioneering, older S-Class: its importance lies in bringing advanced driver assistance and production lithium-ion hybrid technology into the mainstream flagship. W222 is the most hardware-focused evolution, pairing a stronger aluminum-hybrid body with predictive suspension, Intelligent Drive and a more cohesive LED-lit cabin. W223 is the software-defined generation, with MBUX, OLED and 3D displays, OTA updates, rear-axle steering and continuing model-year upgrades.
For a purchase decision, start with priorities rather than reputation: W221 for the lowest entry point, W222 for ride-and-equipment balance, or W223 for interface, updateability and the newest safety and hybrid systems. Then verify the individual VIN, market specification, model year and service history before drawing a conclusion.
