It seats up to seven and is listed to sleep up to five, using a convertible rear bench and a roof bed. Those are separate capacities, and the five-person claim describes the available sleeping layout—not a guarantee that five adults will find it equally comfortable.
Which Mercedes camper van sleeps five?
It is the Marco Polo HORIZON, rather than the separately announced all-electric VLE. Mercedes-Benz Germany describes the HORIZON as a camper for ordinary daily use as well as spontaneous trips. “Sleek,” “posh” and “urban MPV” are apt editorial shorthand for its intended character, not measured claims about ride quality, luxury or city maneuverability.
The manufacturer says the HORIZON can carry up to seven people and sleep up to five. A seat is not necessarily a berth: the sleeping capacity comes from the passenger compartment together with the roof bed, not from seven individual sleeping places.
How the HORIZON’s sleeping layout works
Rear bench berth
Mercedes-Benz lists a three-seat bench in the second rear row that converts into a flat sleeping surface, with a fabric bed extension. The bench provides part of the HORIZON’s sleeping arrangement; the official description does not specify a separate mattress dimension for this berth.

Roof bed
The roof bed measures 2.05 m by 1.13 m on the current Mercedes-Benz Germany product listing. Combined with the berth made from the rear bench, it contributes to the manufacturer’s claim of sleeping space for up to five. That maximum is a capacity statement, not independent evidence about comfort, usable space for particular body sizes, or the experience of sleeping five at once.
What else is listed—and what depends on configuration?
The German product page lists flexible seating for up to seven, ambient lighting in 64 colors and a separately opening rear window. Mercedes-Benz cautions that equipment depends on model, configuration and market, so these should not be treated as standard features on every HORIZON sold everywhere.

The German listing presents the Marco Polo HORIZON 220 d with combined fuel consumption of 7.2 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions of 190.0 g/km and CO₂ class G. Those are the figures shown for that listing, not universal specifications for every engine, configuration or country. Check the current local-market model page for applicable equipment and vehicle figures.
Is this the all-electric Mercedes VLE?
No. The HORIZON and VLE are distinct models. Mercedes-Benz Group’s July 24, 2025 announcement described the VLE as an all-electric MPV based on a new van architecture, with up to eight seats. That announcement does not establish that the Marco Polo HORIZON is electric.

Mercedes-Benz’s March 10, 2026 Canadian media release also describes the VLE as an electric MPV. It is a separate vehicle story, not confirmation of the HORIZON’s powertrain or current launch status. Buyers interested in an electric Mercedes MPV should check the latest local VLE information rather than infer specifications from the HORIZON listing.
How to judge whether it suits your use
The HORIZON’s stated combination—up to seven seats and up to five sleeping places—makes it relevant to shoppers who want a passenger vehicle that can also serve for camping. Before choosing one, check the actual vehicle and local specification for the details that determine whether it fits your routine:

- Confirm the seating and sleeping layout on the exact model and configuration; the advertised maximums do not mean every seat converts to a bed.
- Check which listed features are included in the market and configuration you are considering.
- Verify local fuel-consumption and emissions figures rather than carrying over the German 220 d listing.
- Assess the vehicle’s dimensions, parking fit and day-to-day usability in person. The cited manufacturer material does not provide an independent urban-usability test or comparative score.
How it differs from a converted Mercedes-based camper
A Mercedes-based conversion such as the Pössl CAMPSTAR is not the Marco Polo HORIZON. Pössl’s 2025 Vanline brochure describes the CAMPSTAR with a pop-top roof, a convertible two-seat bench/berth, and an Easy Move Kitchen with gas hobs and a stainless-steel basin. Those details describe Pössl’s conversion, not Mercedes factory equipment on the HORIZON. The brochure does not establish a complete like-for-like comparison of price, dimensions, availability or included equipment.
