For most buyers, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e is the better all-round luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. Mercedes quotes more electric range, its cabin and controls favor relaxed everyday use, and the comparison price reported by the Associated Press and Edmunds was lower. Choose the BMW X5 xDrive50e instead if quicker acceleration and more controlled, sporty cornering matter more than maximum electric mileage or the lowest purchase price.

The differences are meaningful: Mercedes lists 49 miles of electric driving and 381 horsepower, while BMW lists an estimated 44 miles and 483 horsepower. Independent Edmunds testing found the BMW reached 60 mph 1.1 seconds sooner, but described the GLE as more serene and easier to operate. The right choice depends on whether your priorities are quiet commuting and comfort or performance and handling.

Specification Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e BMW X5 xDrive50e
Powertrain output 381 hp from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in-hybrid system (Mercedes-Benz USA, 2026) 483 hp plug-in hybrid (BMW USA current model page)
Manufacturer electric range Up to 49 miles Estimated up to 44 miles; BMW says the figure is preliminary and varies with equipment and conditions
Manufacturer 0–60 mph 5.8 seconds Estimated 4.6 seconds; BMW says the estimate is preliminary
Independent 0–60 mph 5.7 seconds in Edmunds testing reported by the Associated Press 4.6 seconds in the same Edmunds comparison
AC charging 9.6 kW through a J1772 connection Up to 11 kW with BMW’s Flexible Fast Charger or Wallbox Plus
DC charging 60 kW; Mercedes states 10–80% in 20 minutes DC rate not stated on the cited BMW model information
Published cargo capacity 31.5–74.9 cu. ft. Not stated in the cited comparison material
Published towing capacity 7,700 lb Not stated in the cited comparison material
Price reference $72,250 starting MSRP (Mercedes-Benz USA, 2026); $73,600 in the AP/Edmunds comparison $77,450 including destination in the AP/Edmunds comparison
Warranty and maintenance Four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty Four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty plus three years of complimentary maintenance

Because the prices come from different presentations—Mercedes’ current starting MSRP versus an AP/Edmunds comparison price that includes destination for the BMW—treat the dollar gap as a shopping reference, not a guaranteed like-for-like quote. Options, destination charges and model-year equipment can change the final window sticker.

Electric range: the GLE has the paper advantage

Manufacturer ratings

Mercedes-Benz lists up to 49 miles of electric driving for the GLE 450e. BMW lists an estimated up to 44 miles for the X5 xDrive50e and explicitly says that its range is a preliminary BMW AG estimate. BMW also notes that wheels, tires, temperature, driving style and other factors can change the result.

A five-mile difference can determine whether a daily commute stays entirely electric. A driver covering 20 to 25 miles each way may complete a round trip in the GLE without starting its gasoline engine under favorable conditions; the BMW offers less margin. Neither figure guarantees a specific commute because cold weather, highway speeds, cabin heating and elevation reduce usable range in any plug-in hybrid.

Why independent figures differ

The AP article reporting Edmunds’ testing cited approximately 50 electric miles for the GLE and 38 for the X5. Those are test/article figures, not the current manufacturer-page numbers above. Edmunds also reported depleted-battery fuel-economy estimates of 23 mpg combined for the GLE and 22 mpg for the X5. Use those results to understand one test’s outcome, not as a replacement for the official ratings or as a promise for every vehicle.

Which electric-range result matters to you?

  • Choose the GLE for maximum electric buffer: its 49-mile manufacturer claim gives more room for errands, weather and detours before the engine starts.
  • Choose either SUV if you charge at both ends: a workplace or destination charger can make the nominal range difference less important.
  • Do not buy on range alone: verify the final vehicle’s wheel and tire package and consider your winter temperatures and highway speed.

Performance and handling: BMW is decisively quicker

Power and acceleration

The BMW’s 483-hp system has a 102-hp advantage over the GLE’s 381-hp system. BMW quotes a preliminary 4.6-second 0–60-mph estimate, while Mercedes lists 5.8 seconds. Edmunds’ back-to-back testing, as reported by the Associated Press, measured 4.6 seconds for the BMW and 5.7 seconds for the Mercedes, closely matching the manufacturers’ claims.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station | Plug in, up to 40 mph, 25ft Cable, WiFi (2.4GHz), Smart App, Weatherproof Indoor/Outdoor (IP66, NEMA 4), UL & ETL Certified
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

That gap is noticeable when merging, passing or joining a freeway. The X5 delivers the stronger shove and reaches higher speeds sooner; the GLE is still quick for a large luxury SUV but is tuned around smoothness rather than maximum launch drama.

Steering and cornering

Edmunds described the GLE’s steering as light and easy to maneuver in tight spaces. That is useful in parking garages and narrow urban streets, but drivers seeking detailed steering weight may find it less engaging. The X5 felt more stable and secure around corners in the same evaluation, giving it the advantage on winding roads and at higher speeds.

In practical terms, the BMW is the performance choice even before selecting optional chassis equipment. The Mercedes makes more sense when a calm ride, easy maneuvering and reduced effort are higher priorities than aggressive cornering.

Cabin comfort and technology

Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e

Edmunds found the GLE’s cabin spacious and classy, with comfortable seating and convenient access for installing child seats. Its available augmented-reality navigation display can place directional guidance over a camera view, helping the driver identify the correct turn in unfamiliar areas. The overall impression is one of isolation and ease rather than sportiness.

BMW X5 xDrive50e

The X5 was also judged roomy and well isolated. BMW’s voice controls earned praise, which can reduce the need to search through menus while driving. However, Edmunds said the menu layout can be difficult and that some climate functions are buried in touchscreen menus. Drivers who frequently adjust temperature, ventilation or seat-related settings should spend time in a parked vehicle to confirm that the interface feels natural.

Technology decision

  • GLE: better fit if straightforward controls, child-seat access and available augmented-reality navigation are central to your daily use.
  • X5: better fit if you prefer strong voice interaction and are willing to learn a more menu-heavy interface.
  • Both: inspect the exact trim and options, because display and assistance features can vary from the vehicles used in an article or demonstration.

Charging at home and on the road

GLE 450e charging hardware

Mercedes specifies a 9.6-kW AC charger using a J1772 connection. For DC fast charging, it lists up to 60 kW and a 10–80% session in 20 minutes. The DC figure is unusual for a plug-in hybrid and can be useful during a long trip when a short stop is preferable to waiting for an AC session.

X5 xDrive50e charging hardware

BMW describes charging at up to 11 kW AC with its Flexible Fast Charger or BMW Wallbox Plus, and says a full charge takes about three hours at the maximum rate. The cited BMW information does not state a DC fast-charging rate, so do not assume that the X5 can match the GLE’s 60-kW capability.

Planning a home installation

  1. Confirm your electrical service: have a qualified electrician check whether your panel and wiring can support the intended 240-volt Level 2 circuit.
  2. Match the connector: the GLE uses J1772 AC charging. Select a J1772-compatible Level 2 charger and confirm that the cable reaches the vehicle’s parking position.
  3. Choose the BMW equipment: BMW identifies its Flexible Fast Charger and Wallbox Plus as compatible home solutions for the X5 50e; verify the final unit’s output and installation requirements.
  4. Set a charging schedule: use the vehicle or charger controls to charge during your utility’s lower-cost period if your electricity plan offers time-of-use pricing.
  5. Check the first session: after installation, confirm that the car reports the expected charging power and that the circuit, plug and cable remain cool and secure.

The maximum rates are ceilings, not guarantees. A home’s circuit, ambient temperature, state of charge and charger settings can make an individual session slower. The BMW’s approximately three-hour figure assumes its maximum 11-kW AC rate; the Mercedes’ 20-minute figure applies to a 10–80% DC session, not a complete battery refill.

Cargo, towing and everyday utility

Mercedes publishes 31.5 to 74.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity for the GLE 450e and a 7,700-pound towing rating. The spread reflects different seat configurations, with the larger number available when the rear seats are folded. That capacity and towing figure make the GLE the better-documented choice for buyers who carry bulky equipment or tow a substantial trailer.

The cited BMW material does not provide a comparable cargo or towing figure. That does not mean the X5 cannot meet your needs; it means you should obtain the exact capacity and tow rating for the model, hitch and equipment package you intend to buy. Check payload, tongue weight and trailer-brake requirements separately rather than relying on a general X5 specification.

Family-use considerations

  • Test your own child seats in the second row; Edmunds specifically found the GLE convenient for child-seat access.
  • Measure the cargo opening with the rear seats upright if you regularly use a stroller, pet crate or tall cases.
  • For towing, confirm the installed hitch rating and the vehicle’s payload after passengers and luggage are counted.

Price, warranty and ownership context

Purchase price

Mercedes-Benz USA lists a $72,250 starting MSRP for the 2026 GLE 450e. The AP/Edmunds comparison listed the GLE at $73,600 and the BMW X5 xDrive50e at $77,450 including destination. The comparison therefore put the BMW $3,850 higher, but the figures may include different destination treatment, options or inventory timing. Request written out-the-door quotes for identically equipped vehicles.

Warranty and maintenance

In the AP/Edmunds comparison, both SUVs carried four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranties. BMW additionally included three years of complimentary maintenance. The cited material does not specify separate high-voltage-battery warranty terms, scheduled-service intervals or repair pricing, so ask the dealer for those details before signing.

Fuel use after the battery is depleted

Once usable electric energy is exhausted, the plug-in systems operate as hybrids and still consume gasoline. Edmunds’ comparison estimated 23 mpg combined for the GLE and 22 mpg for the X5 in its depleted-battery testing. Those estimates belong to that test and model-year context; they should not be combined with the manufacturers’ electric-range or MPGe figures as if all were measured under one procedure.

Which SUV fits your priorities?

Your priority Better match Why
Longest stated electric commute GLE 450e Mercedes lists up to 49 miles versus BMW’s estimated up to 44 miles.
Fastest acceleration X5 xDrive50e 483 hp and 4.6 seconds to 60 mph in BMW’s estimate and Edmunds’ test.
Relaxed highway comfort GLE 450e Edmunds emphasized serene comfort, spacious seating and easy controls.
Sporty cornering X5 xDrive50e Edmunds found it more stable and secure around corners.
Simple maneuvering in tight spaces GLE 450e Its light steering was easier in confined areas.
Fast public charging option GLE 450e Mercedes states 60-kW DC charging and 10–80% in 20 minutes; BMW’s cited information gives no DC rate.
Documented towing capability GLE 450e Mercedes publishes a 7,700-pound rating; the cited BMW material does not state one.
Included scheduled maintenance X5 xDrive50e BMW adds three years of complimentary maintenance to the shared four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage.

How to make the final decision

  1. Record your real commute: total the miles you drive on a normal weekday and a winter or high-speed day, then compare that number with each vehicle’s electric-range claim.
  2. Drive both on the same route: include a tight parking area, rough pavement, a highway merge and several corners. This exposes the GLE’s light steering and the X5’s extra stability better than a short dealership loop.
  3. Operate the controls while parked: adjust climate settings, enter a destination and test voice commands. The difference between accessible controls and buried menus is personal and cannot be captured by horsepower.
  4. Verify charging access: confirm a J1772 Level 2 solution for the Mercedes and an 11-kW-capable BMW setup if you want the quoted maximum. Ask about installation cost and panel capacity.
  5. Price identical equipment: include destination, tow hardware, wheel and tire packages, driver-assistance options and maintenance plans before comparing the final totals.
  6. Match utility to your load: test your child seats and cargo, and obtain the BMW’s exact tow and cargo specifications if those functions are decisive.

Bottom line: comfort and range versus speed

The GLE 450e wins the broader recommendation because its manufacturer-stated electric range is longer, its cabin and interface emphasize comfort, Mercedes documents useful 60-kW DC charging, and the comparison price was lower. It is the more sensible fit for an owner who charges at home, carries family or gear and wants a quiet, low-effort commute.

The X5 xDrive50e earns its place with genuine performance advantages. Its 483-hp system and 4.6-second acceleration make it dramatically quicker, and Edmunds found it more composed through corners. Pay the premium for the BMW when driving enjoyment and high-speed confidence are your non-negotiables, and when its menu-heavy climate controls and shorter stated electric range are acceptable trade-offs.
