Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. Audi Q7 (2026): Space, Comfort and Features Compared

The Audi Q7 offers a standard three-row, seven-seat layout, while the Mercedes-Benz GLE prioritizes second-row flexibility and offers seven seats only on selected configurations. Here is what the published 2026 U.S. specifications show—and where an in-person check is essential.

Choose the Audi Q7 if seven seats are non-negotiable. Audi lists every 2026 Q7 with three rows and seating for seven. The Mercedes-Benz GLE is more configuration-dependent: the GLE 350 is listed with five seats and an optional seven-seat layout, while Mercedes-Benz identifies a folding third row only on selected higher trims.

The GLE offers more explicitly documented second-row flexibility, including a 40/20/40 split and reclining backrests. The Q7 emphasizes a standard three-row layout and touch-button third-row folding. Published cargo figures are measured under different conditions, so neither manufacturer’s number establishes a simple capacity winner. Your decision should turn on the exact seat configuration, how often all three rows are occupied, desired cabin equipment, and the trim-level suspension and technology.

Seating and passenger space

Mercedes-Benz GLE: flexible second row, optional third row

Mercedes-Benz lists the 2026 GLE 350 with five seats. A seven-seat configuration is optional, so a GLE that appears identical in photos may not have the same passenger capacity. Mercedes-Benz’s lineup information also describes a 50/50 split-folding third row as optional on the GLE 450 and GLE 580. Do not assume that a third row is available on every GLE version; confirm the seating option on the exact build sheet.

The GLE 350 specifications provide these passenger measurements:

  • Front headroom: 40.5 inches
  • Front legroom: 40.3 inches
  • Front shoulder room: 59.3 inches
  • Rear headroom: 36.9 inches
  • Rear legroom: 40.9 inches
  • Rear shoulder room: 58.3 inches

Mercedes-Benz specifically says the second row folds in a 40/20/40 split for cargo versatility or reclines for added comfort. That center section can let you carry a long item while leaving the outer rear seats usable, while the reclining function is useful when passengers—not cargo—are the priority.

Audi Q7: seven seats and three rows are standard on the listing

Audi’s 2026 U.S. Q7 overview lists three rows and seating for seven. Audi describes the third-row seats as folding at the touch of a button. That gives the Q7 a clearer starting point for buyers who regularly need six or seven occupied seats: the manufacturer’s published configuration does not require selecting a separate GLE-style seven-seat option.

The researched Audi U.S. overview does not state comparable front- and rear-passenger dimensions. It also does not provide a cargo figure with all three rows in use. Do not fill those gaps with dimensions from an older Q7, an overseas specification or an unrelated dealer listing; those figures may describe a different model year or market.

What this means for families

If you routinely carry seven people, begin with the Q7’s listed three-row, seven-seat configuration, then verify the actual trim and seat materials. If you usually carry four or five people but sometimes need a third row, compare a five-seat GLE 350 with the optional seven-seat build and decide whether the extra row is worth the space and equipment trade-off.

For child-seat buyers, test the exact vehicle with your own seats. Check access to the third row, the angle of each seatback, buckle reach and whether a rear-facing seat reduces usable front-seat travel. The published numbers cannot answer those fit questions for your particular family.

Cargo space: why the published numbers do not name a winner

Mercedes-Benz reports 33.3–74.9 cubic feet for GLE 350 cargo capacity. Audi reports 68.1 cubic feet for the Q7 with both the second and third rows folded. Those are not equivalent conditions: one source gives a range without identifying a single seating position in the cited specification, while the other identifies a maximum after folding two rows.

Vehicle Manufacturer-published figure Condition stated by source
GLE 350 33.3–74.9 cu ft Mercedes-Benz presents a capacity range on the 2026 GLE 350 specifications page; the cited range is not a like-for-like all-seats-up measurement against the Q7 figure.
Q7 68.1 cu ft Audi states this volume with the second and third rows folded.

Use the figures as orientation, not as a laboratory comparison. Cargo capacity changes as soon as you raise a third-row seat, recline a second-row backrest or load items above the seatback. A vehicle that wins on maximum folded volume may be less useful when you need several passenger seats and luggage at the same time.

Match the cargo question to your normal trip

  • Seven passengers plus bags: ask the dealer to open the exact third-row vehicle and place your normal luggage behind the raised row.
  • Four or five passengers: compare the usable floor with the second row in its normal position, then test the GLE’s 40/20/40 center pass-through.
  • Long or bulky items: check the width and height of the opening, not only the manufacturer’s cubic-foot maximum.
  • Daily loading: verify lift-over height, seat-fold controls and whether a cargo cover must be removed.

If you buy a cargo liner, confirm model year, trim, drivetrain and whether the vehicle has five or seven seats. A liner shaped for a five-seat floor will not necessarily fit a third-row configuration.

Comfort and cabin equipment

GLE comfort features depend heavily on trim

Mercedes-Benz describes MBUX as combining a touchscreen, touch-sensitive controls, voice control and user personalization. The system supports up to seven profiles. Mercedes-Benz says profiles can pre-position the driver’s seat and mirrors, which is useful when several drivers share the SUV. The GLE page also describes 64-color ambient lighting.

Higher-trim equipment is not universal. Mercedes-Benz says Pinnacle trim adds four-zone climate control, cabin-air ionization, ultrafine filtration, aromatherapy and heated or cooled front cupholders. Those features matter if rear passengers need independent temperature control or if air-quality equipment is a priority, but they should be priced as part of the specific trim rather than assumed on a base GLE.

Q7 interface, audio and air suspension

Audi highlights its Audi virtual cockpit plus digital instrument display and MMI touch response. The MMI system uses a secondary touchscreen for climate-control functions. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are listed among the Q7’s phone-integration features.

Audi says a 730-watt Bang & Olufsen system with 17 speakers is standard on Premium Plus and Prestige trims. It also says adaptive air suspension is newly standard for 2026 on the Premium Plus trimline. Those are trim-specific statements: a Q7 Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige should not be treated as identically equipped simply because they share the same body style.

How to compare comfort without a subjective road-test claim

The available manufacturer information supports an equipment comparison, not a verdict that one cabin is objectively quieter, softer or easier to operate. During your own drive, evaluate the items that affect your routine:

  • Can every regular driver create and retrieve a profile?
  • Are the climate controls easy to use while moving?
  • Does the second row provide the recline angle your passengers want?
  • Can children reach charging ports and storage areas without distracting the driver?
  • Does the audio, filtration or lighting package you want require a higher trim?
  • Does the suspension equipment on the exact build match your preference for adjustability?

Infotainment and daily usability

MBUX in the GLE

MBUX’s distinguishing feature in this comparison is personalization. Seven profiles and seat-and-mirror positioning can reduce setup time for a shared vehicle. Voice control and touch-sensitive inputs provide more than one way to access functions, although the practical benefit depends on how accurately the system recognizes your commands and how much you prefer physical controls. Confirm the interface in the vehicle you are buying because screen and control equipment can vary by trim.

Virtual cockpit and MMI in the Q7

The Q7’s Audi virtual cockpit plus places configurable information in the instrument display, while MMI touch response handles central functions. The secondary climate touchscreen separates climate controls from the main display, but it also means climate adjustments occur on a screen rather than a traditional bank of switches. Wireless phone integration is listed by Audi, so check that your phone and preferred apps connect as expected during your demonstration drive.

Neither manufacturer’s product page establishes a universal winner for usability. Choose the layout that lets the primary driver complete common tasks—temperature changes, navigation, audio selection and driver-profile changes—with the fewest distractions.

Powertrains, suspension and trim strategy

Q7 engine choices

Audi lists two Q7 engine choices for 2026. The Q7 45 uses a 261-horsepower four-cylinder. The Q7 55 uses a 335-horsepower V6 and 369 lb-ft of torque; Audi gives a 5.5-second 0-to-60-mph time for the 55 TFSI. That acceleration figure is an Audi claim for the named version, not an independent test result.

Adaptive air suspension is identified as standard on Premium Plus for 2026. If suspension adjustability is important, compare Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige equipment line by line rather than assuming every Q7 has the same system.

GLE versions are not interchangeable

Mercedes-Benz’s GLE range includes gasoline, hybrid and AMG variants. The detailed dimensions and seating figures cited here belong specifically to the GLE 350 page. Do not transfer its passenger measurements, cargo range or seating assumptions to another GLE powertrain or AMG model without checking that model’s specification.

Build the comparison by equipment, not badge

A fair shopping comparison pairs similarly equipped vehicles. For example, compare the GLE trim that includes the comfort equipment you want with the Q7 trim that includes its desired audio and suspension systems. Record whether the third row, four-zone climate control, premium audio and adaptive suspension are standard, optional or unavailable on each exact build.

Which SUV fits common use cases?

You need seven seats every day

The Q7 is the simpler starting point because Audi lists three rows and seven seats. Still inspect third-row access, child-seat placement and luggage room with all seats occupied; the published overview does not provide an all-seats-up cargo number.

You usually carry five people and value adaptable cargo space

The GLE’s documented 40/20/40 second-row split and reclining function directly address mixed passenger-and-cargo trips. A five-seat GLE 350 may also suit you better if you never need a third row. If occasional seven-person trips are part of your routine, price and inspect the optional seven-seat configuration instead of assuming it can be added later.

Rear climate and air quality are priorities

Look for the GLE Pinnacle equipment that Mercedes-Benz lists—four-zone climate control, ionization, ultrafine filtration, aromatherapy and heated or cooled front cupholders—or compare it with the Q7 trim’s available climate and cabin options. These features are package- and trim-dependent, so use the current build sheet.

You want configurable displays and wireless phone integration

The Q7’s virtual cockpit plus, MMI touch response and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are the relevant listed features. Confirm screen size and included equipment on the exact trim before signing.

You care about suspension adjustability

For the Q7, Audi identifies adaptive air suspension as standard on Premium Plus for 2026. For the GLE, verify the suspension system attached to the specific trim and drivetrain. The cited product information does not support a subjective ride-quality ranking without a road test.

How to compare two dealer vehicles correctly

  1. Write down the seat count. Confirm whether the GLE is a five-seat or seven-seat build and verify that the Q7 has its listed three rows.
  2. Photograph the window stickers. Record trim, powertrain, packages and destination charges so you are not comparing a highly optioned vehicle with a base model.
  3. Test your people and equipment. Bring child seats, booster seats, a stroller and the largest luggage you regularly carry.
  4. Use every seat position. Sit in the front with a rear-facing child seat installed, then test the second- and third-row access and knee room.
  5. Operate the folding mechanisms. Try the GLE’s 40/20/40 second-row split and the Q7’s touch-button third-row folding on the actual vehicles.
  6. Check the comfort features you will pay for. Test profile recall, climate zones, seat adjustments, audio settings, phone pairing and suspension modes.
  7. Recheck current pricing. Mercedes-Benz’s live lineup and individual model pages can show different starting prices as configurations and page updates change. Use same-day configurators and compare similarly equipped totals.

What the published information does—and does not—establish

The manufacturer pages establish a clear seating distinction: the Q7 is listed with seven seats and three rows, while the GLE 350 starts with five seats and offers seven as an option. They also establish different types of cargo information and document the GLE’s second-row split-and-recline function and the Q7’s touch-button third-row folding.

They do not provide a comparable set of 2026 U.S. passenger dimensions for both vehicles, nor do they give matching all-seats-up cargo measurements. Therefore, a claim that one SUV is definitively larger inside, has more third-row legroom or carries more luggage with every seat raised would go beyond the stated evidence. The responsible way to resolve those questions is an in-person check of the exact configurations you are considering.

Official manufacturer wording

“Offering three rows of seating for up to seven passengers and a spacious cargo area, the Audi Q7 has room for everything.”

— Audi USA, 2026 Q7 overview

Audi also states: “Newly standard for 2026 on the Premium Plus trimline, the adaptive air suspension automatically adjusts to road conditions to optimize driving dynamics and comfort.” The Premium Plus qualification applies to that statement.

“The 2nd-row seats can fold in a 40/20/40-split for cargo versatility or recline for added comfort.”

Bottom line for a 2026 U.S. buyer

Select the Q7 when its listed three-row, seven-seat layout matches a regular need for carrying people. Select the GLE when second-row flexibility, MBUX profile personalization or Mercedes-Benz’s available climate and air-quality equipment matters more—and verify whether your chosen GLE actually includes the optional third row. Because the published cargo measurements use different conditions, compare your own passengers, child seats and luggage in the exact vehicles before deciding.
