A GLE 450e that will not charge does not automatically have a failed high-voltage battery. The charging-cable indicators, the difference between an AC and DC fault, and the exact warning color usually narrow the problem to the cable, power supply, charging control software, onboard AC charger, or the high-voltage system itself.
Start with the documented cable reset: disconnect the cable from both the vehicle and the mains socket, wait approximately five seconds, and reconnect it. If the indicator remains red, a charging process still will not start, or the vehicle displays a yellow or red high-voltage-battery warning, stop treating it as a simple plug-in problem and arrange qualified Mercedes-Benz service.

What the GLE 450e charging lights mean
The control panel on the Mercedes-Benz charging cable separates a connected power supply from active charging and from cable or vehicle faults. Read the lights before trying repeated resets.

A white light with no green flashing generally means that electricity reaches the cable but a charging session has not begun. That can result from the wall outlet, the cable, the vehicle plug, a charging schedule, or the vehicle’s charging electronics; it is not, by itself, proof of battery damage.

The first five-minute troubleshooting procedure
Use this sequence for a normal charging interruption when no red high-voltage warning tells you to stop driving immediately. Do not open any component or handle orange high-voltage wiring.
- Read the indicators. Note whether the supply light is white, whether the charging light is flashing green, and whether a temperature or safety light is red.
- Stop the session normally. Cancel charging in the vehicle or app if controls respond, then remove the connector from the vehicle.
- Disconnect both ends. Remove the cable from the vehicle and from the mains socket. Mercedes-Benz’s charging-cable instruction specifies disconnecting it from the vehicle and mains and waiting approximately five seconds.
- Reconnect in a controlled order. Inspect the plug and socket for heat, discoloration, moisture, looseness, or visible damage. Reconnect to the mains and then to the vehicle without forcing either connector.
- Watch for the expected state. A healthy start should leave the supply indicator white and the charging indicator flashing green once the vehicle authorizes charging.
- Stop if the fault returns. A persistent flashing or steady red safety light, repeated overheating, or a charging message that will not clear needs qualified inspection rather than repeated plug cycles.
This reset addresses a charging-cable control fault. It cannot repair a failed wall circuit, a damaged connector, an onboard charger, or a high-voltage battery.
When AC charging fails but DC charging still works
The July 2026 GLE MBUX manual treats AC and DC charging as separate paths. That distinction is useful because a vehicle that accepts one path but rejects the other has not demonstrated a complete battery failure.

The manual directs owners to a qualified specialist workshop for persistent charging-process messages. If the display instructs you to stop or says that the drive system has been automatically deactivated, follow that instruction immediately and do not continue driving merely because another charging method worked earlier.

Changing charge limits, departure times or charging pauses
Some GLE 450e owners report that a departure time, charging pause, location-based charging setting, or target state-of-charge limit changes unexpectedly in the Mercedes me app or the head-unit display. A target that changes to 50% or another random value can look like a weak battery, but the symptom is a control or software problem until testing proves otherwise.
What is documented about the software symptom
A 2025 electrical-system bulletin summary records complaints that AC charging cannot start and that charging profiles can change unexpectedly. The listed remedy is a software update and SCN coding for the N116/5 direct-current charging connection unit and the N83/11 AC charger for the high-voltage battery. The summary said a software fix was expected in January 2026.
That summary is secondary information, and applicability depends on the vehicle identification number and software level. Ask a Mercedes-Benz dealer to verify the vehicle’s VIN, installed software, and whether the relevant update and coding have been completed. Do not assume that every GLE 450e has the same campaign or that changing a setting in the app means the battery has lost capacity.
Information to capture before service
- Photograph the unexpected target percentage or schedule.
- Record whether the change appears in both the app and the MBUX display.
- Note the charging location, cable type, start time, and whether AC or DC was selected.
- Write down any accompanying warning text and the cable-light colors.
- Provide the vehicle identification number so software applicability can be checked against the vehicle’s configuration.

A warning of this kind is not a do-it-yourself battery repair. Mercedes-Benz owner documentation says work on components carrying live voltage belongs only to a qualified specialist workshop. Never open the high-voltage battery, bypass an interlock, or probe an orange cable.
Does a charging problem prove that the battery is failing?
No. The same symptom can originate in different parts of the charging chain. A GLE 450e may fail to begin AC charging because of the mains supply, portable EVSE, connector, vehicle inlet, charging schedule, software, or onboard AC charger. A DC-only failure points to a different charging path. An unexpected app limit points first toward profile or control software. None of those observations alone establishes a defective traction battery.
A battery-related diagnosis becomes more urgent when the vehicle shows a yellow or red high-voltage-battery fault, limits propulsion, deactivates the drive system, or repeatedly reports a battery-system error after the external charging equipment has been ruled out. Even then, the exact cause requires Mercedes-Benz diagnostic equipment and inspection; the available sources do not establish a population-wide GLE 450e battery-failure rate.

Owners in the United States should check the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN in the Mercedes-Benz USA recall lookup. That portal was listed as last updated October 12, 2026 and includes current and previous US campaigns.

NHTSA campaign 23V-807 covers certain 2024 GLE 450e plug-in hybrids. The filing describes an electronic-stability-program software error that could increase the force required to stop and extend stopping distance. The remedy is a free ESP software update. The filing reported 2,797 potentially affected vehicles and a manufacturer report date of December 1, 2023.
This is a braking-control recall, not evidence that the traction battery is failing. A recall result should nevertheless be handled promptly, especially when it concerns braking or stability control. Recall coverage is VIN-specific, so a vehicle’s model year alone cannot determine eligibility.

Clues pointing to the electrical supply
- The cable’s white supply indicator does not illuminate.
- The same outlet trips or becomes hot with other equipment.
- Charging works at a different, known-good location with the same vehicle and cable.
Stop using a hot, loose, damaged, or discolored outlet. A household circuit problem needs an electrician or site operator, not a vehicle software reset.

Clues pointing to the cable or connector
- The safety indicator flashes red or the temperature indicator turns red.
- The cable fault follows the cable to more than one suitable supply.
- The vehicle plug or cable end shows visible damage, contamination, or heat marking.
After the documented disconnect and five-second wait, a persistent cable fault calls for cable replacement or inspection of the vehicle plug by a qualified specialist workshop. Replacing a cable is appropriate only when its connector, current rating, plug type, region, and vehicle compatibility match the GLE 450e. A replacement cable cannot fix a failed vehicle-side AC charger.

Clues pointing to vehicle charging electronics or software
- AC charging fails at multiple known-good locations while DC charging remains available.
- Charging limits, pauses, locations, or departure times change without an intentional edit.
- The vehicle displays a persistent AC, DC, or high-voltage-system message after the external equipment is checked.
These patterns justify a diagnostic appointment and a software-level check. Bring the exact message and the conditions under which it appeared rather than describing the problem only as “the battery will not charge.”
What to give the workshop
A precise record reduces the chance that an intermittent fault disappears before inspection. Provide:
- The 17-digit VIN and vehicle model year.
- The date, time, location, and charging type when the fault occurred.
- Whether the session was AC or DC and whether another path still worked.
- All cable-control-panel colors and whether they were steady or flashing.
- Photos or screenshots of warning text, state-of-charge limits, schedules, or changed app settings.
- The cable’s connector and plug type, current rating, and whether the cable is portable or installed equipment.
- Whether the five-second full disconnect/reconnect changed the result.
Ask the service adviser to check for VIN-specific recalls, relevant software updates and SCN coding, and diagnostic faults in the AC charger, DC charging connection unit, and high-voltage system. Those checks are more informative than replacing parts based only on a single failed session.

- Do not open the high-voltage battery enclosure.
- Do not bypass charging interlocks or defeat safety locks.
- Do not probe orange high-voltage cables with a meter or improvised test lead.
- Do not continue driving after a display instructs you to stop or says the drive system has been deactivated.
- Do not treat a red temperature or safety indicator as a nuisance light to be cleared by repeated reconnection.
- Do not assume that a new charging cable will repair a failed onboard charger or a high-voltage-system fault.
A practical decision path
- No light or no supply indication: stop and investigate the outlet, circuit, or supply equipment. Do not use a hot or damaged socket.
- White supply light but no green flashing: check whether the vehicle is waiting for a schedule or target limit, then perform the documented full disconnect and five-second wait.
- Flashing red safety light: treat it as a cable malfunction. If reconnection does not clear it, arrange cable or vehicle-plug inspection.
- Red temperature light: stop charging and allow cooling. A repeat event needs inspection for overheating or connection resistance.
- AC fails while DC works, or DC fails while AC works: record the exact message and request diagnosis of the affected charging path, including software verification where relevant.
- Yellow high-voltage warning: schedule maintenance before the displayed remaining distance is exhausted.
- Red high-voltage warning or automatic drive-system deactivation: follow the stop instruction and obtain immediate qualified assistance.
Bottom line for GLE 450e owners
Charging lights and the AC/DC split provide useful triage, but they do not identify a failed battery by themselves. Begin with the five-second cable reset, verify the external supply, and document whether the problem is limited to AC, DC, or an app-controlled charging profile. Persistent red cable indicators and any high-voltage warning belong with a qualified Mercedes-Benz workshop. Check the VIN for recalls, while keeping the 23V-807 braking-software campaign separate from traction-battery diagnosis.
