The Mercedes-Benz GLC replaced the GLK in 2015. Its first major refresh was announced in 2019 and began reaching markets that year; the fully redesigned SUV announced in 2022 is the 2023 model-year generation in Mercedes-Benz USA materials. Later additions—including the U.S. 2025 GLC 350e plug-in hybrid—are powertrain updates, not new generations.
How many Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV generations are there?
For the five-door GLC SUV, the clearest way to describe the history is as two generations: the original GLC introduced in 2015, then the redesigned generation announced in 2022 and sold in the United States as a 2023 model. The original generation received a substantial refresh announced in 2019, commonly associated with the 2020 model year in U.S. coverage.
Calendar launch dates and model-year labels are not interchangeable. Mercedes-Benz says the GLC arrived in fall 2015 as the successor to the GLK, while the U.S. newsroom’s surviving model-year materials begin with the 2017 range. First generation: the GLC replaces the GLK (2015–2019)
2015: GLC name debuts
Mercedes-Benz introduced the GLC in fall 2015, succeeding the GLK in the brand’s SUV range. The manufacturer later described the GLC and its predecessor together as having sold more than 2.6 million examples worldwide since the GLC’s introduction; that cumulative figure combines GLK and GLC sales, not GLC sales alone.

The name change marks the start of GLC history, but it does not by itself identify a particular engine, trim or equipment package. Those details vary by market and model year, so use a country-specific guide for a specific vehicle rather than assuming every GLC sold worldwide had the same specification.
2019 refresh: MBUX, touch displays and updated powertrains
What changed
Mercedes-Benz announced a redesigned GLC in February 2019, with the market launch beginning in mid-2019 and additional powertrains following later that year. In U.S. model-year terms, this refresh is commonly presented as the 2020 GLC. The manufacturer highlighted larger touch multimedia displays and its MBUX multimedia system, expanded driver-assistance features, and a newer gasoline and diesel engine family.

These are broad refresh themes, not a promise that every feature or engine appeared in every country, trim or drivetrain. The 2019 announcement describes the changes and rollout; it is not a complete annual equipment list. How to recognize the refresh in a used GLC
When comparing an earlier first-generation SUV with a refreshed one, focus on the actual vehicle’s multimedia interface, display and installed assistance features, then verify its engine and drivetrain from its market-specific documentation. Registration year alone may not settle the model year or equipment, especially around a mid-year rollout.

Redesigned generation: announced in 2022, sold as a 2023 U.S. model
What the generation change means
Mercedes-Benz announced the fully redesigned GLC in 2022. The global sales-start announcement is dated July 13, 2022, while Mercedes-Benz USA identifies the new-generation SUV as the 2023 GLC. This is the key generational break for U.S. model-year comparisons: a 2023 GLC is not simply another equipment refresh of the 2020-era SUV.
Manufacturer launch material highlighted updated design, electrified powertrains in the German range and new rear-axle steering. Those launch-market details should not be treated as a universal U.S. equipment list. The Mercedes-Benz announcement of the new GLC sales start is dated July 13, 2022; check the U.S. newsroom archive or the exact vehicle’s documentation for U.S. model-year packaging.

Later powertrain developments are not new generations
2025 U.S. GLC 350e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid
In March 2024, Mercedes-Benz USA announced the 2025 GLC 350e 4MATIC SUV. It is a plug-in hybrid addition within the redesigned SUV generation, not a separate generation. Do not conflate it with other forms of electrification mentioned in launch material: a plug-in hybrid, a mild-hybrid system and a fully electric vehicle are distinct powertrain types.
2025 all-electric GLC with EQ Technology
At IAA Mobility in September 2025, Mercedes-Benz premiered an all-new electric GLC with EQ Technology. That is a distinct electric product development, not evidence that the conventional GLC SUV generation was replaced in every market. The premiere establishes an announcement, not the eventual availability, specifications or timing for every country. Mercedes-Benz’s IAA Mobility 2025 page also mentions plans to introduce more than 40 models between 2025 and 2027; that is company-wide planning context, not a GLC production or sales figure.

What to check when comparing GLC model years
A generation label helps narrow down what changed, but it cannot tell you exactly what a particular used vehicle has. Compare the vehicle’s country of sale, model year, body style, trim, engine and drivetrain, then confirm its installed equipment and parts fitment.
- Generation and refresh: distinguish the original GLC, its 2019-announced refresh and the generation announced in 2022.
- Powertrain and drivetrain: identify whether the vehicle is conventionally powered, a plug-in hybrid or fully electric, and confirm its drivetrain. An electrified powertrain label does not mean the vehicle is all-electric.
- Infotainment and assistance: verify the actual multimedia system, display and driver-assistance equipment rather than assuming that a feature announced for the range was standard on every trim.
- Body style: this timeline covers the five-door SUV. Coupe variants can follow different timing and should be checked separately.
- Market and trim: global or German launch specifications do not automatically apply to a U.S. vehicle or another country’s lineup.
- Model-year fitment: confirm the exact year and configuration for replacement parts and accessories. For example, the Mercedes-Benz parts catalog listing for 2025 GLC 300 floor mats specifies fitment for that application, not all GLCs.
Floor-mat fit is also a safety check
Do not choose floor mats by the GLC name alone: check model year, configuration and the vehicle’s retention points. The 2024 GLC SUV owner’s manual says to secure mats as prescribed and not use loose or stacked mats, which can impede pedal travel.
