Mercedes-Benz’s rebooted CLA is a deliberate hedge: its new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) is designed for both battery-electric and electrified combustion powertrains. The all-electric CLA arrived first; a 48-volt hybrid followed, with availability and specifications differing by market. That gives buyers more than one way into the CLA range, but the launches alone do not show whether the strategy will improve Mercedes’ sales or profitability.
Why Mercedes built two powertrains into the CLA family
The new CLA is the first model family to demonstrate Mercedes-Benz’s MMA platform approach. The company says MMA can support battery-electric vehicles as well as electrified combustion-engine vehicles, rather than forcing every model built on it into a single powertrain path. Calling this a hedge is a description of the product strategy, not a quoted Mercedes-Benz slogan.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius described the reasoning in a March 2025 interview: “We’re in an era where we’re going towards electrification, but in the year 2025 obviously, we’re not 100 percent electrification. So for many years to come we will have a duality.” The strategy therefore keeps an electric option at the center of the CLA launch while also offering a hybrid for customers or markets where a combustion engine remains relevant. The available announcements explain the product plan, but do not establish that it has reversed sales trends or improved profitability.
Electric CLA: range, charging and prices by market
Electric CLA figures are not directly interchangeable across regions: the European range claim uses WLTP, while the U.S. figure uses EPA certification. Prices also apply to different markets and announcement dates.

The U.S. specifications and prices are from Mercedes-Benz USA’s November 25, 2025 announcement; the European figures and German prices are from Mercedes-Benz’s April 2025 announcement. They are manufacturer-published figures, not independent road-test results. For the U.S. 250+, Mercedes-Benz also claims up to 100 miles of range added in five minutes and up to 202 miles in ten minutes. Those charging claims depend on the company’s stated conditions and should not be taken as a guarantee for every charger, battery state or trip.
Mercedes announced the electric CLA for European orders in April 2025. Its U.S. announcement in November 2025 covered the 2026 electric models. The European maximum-range figure and the U.S. EPA ratings describe different certification regimes; neither should be presented as a direct prediction of every driver’s real-world range.

What the CLA hybrid is—and is not
The hybrid pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, called 8F-eDCT. An integrated electric motor and a 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery are part of a 48V system. Mercedes says the setup can propel the car electrically in some conditions, coast and recover energy.
This is not described as a plug-in hybrid in the cited Mercedes announcements: they do not specify external charging. Its small battery supports the hybrid system rather than serving as a separately chargeable long-range EV battery.

For Germany, Mercedes listed the CLA 180 hybrid from €46,243, with combined fuel consumption of 5.4–4.9 L/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 123–111 g/km. These are the manufacturer’s German-market figures, not independent measurements or universal figures for every version. Mercedes later described three output levels across the hybrid family—100 kW (136 hp), 120 kW (163 hp) and 140 kW (190 hp)—with front- or all-wheel drive depending on the version.

Mercedes announced the electric CLA for European orders in April 2025, then announced the hybrid later that year; its German and European sales launch followed in November 2025. In the United States, the November 2025 launch announcement covered electric CLA models. Mercedes-Benz USA subsequently listed a guide for a 2027 CLA hybrid, so the U.S. hybrid model year is distinct from the 2026 electric launch. Availability can vary by country, and the cited announcements do not establish a single worldwide on-sale date.

What the strategy means for a buyer
The practical choice is between the powertrain and operating needs, not simply between two trim levels. The electric CLA requires access to charging that suits the buyer’s routine; its published range and charging figures vary by market and test method. The 48V hybrid uses fuel and can operate electrically in some conditions, but the cited system description does not offer external charging.
- Choose the electric version if: a battery-electric car fits your charging access and your market’s available models. Compare the local EPA or WLTP figure rather than treating the two standards as equivalent.
- Consider the hybrid if: you want a combustion engine with electric assistance and do not require a plug-in charging function. Check which output, drivetrain and model year are actually offered where you live.
- Compare local prices carefully: the German euro prices and U.S. dollar MSRPs above come from different markets and announcements; they are not like-for-like international price comparisons.
Recognition is not proof of commercial success
Mercedes-Benz reported on January 9, 2026, that the CLA won European Car of the Year 2026. The company said the jury of 59 automotive journalists from 23 countries awarded it 320 points, 100 more than the runner-up. That recognition is relevant context, but it does not establish sales performance, reliability or the financial effect of offering both powertrains.
