Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a U.S. buyer comparing the announced 2027 launch versions, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive has the lower published starting price and higher claimed maximum EPA range. The Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric counters with a quicker estimated 0–60 mph figure in Mercedes’ U.S. guide, clearly stated trunk and frunk volumes, and its own MB.OS charging and vehicle-management features. Neither is a universal winner. Confirm the final EPA label, wheel-and-tire configuration, options, incentives, dealer inventory, and delivery timing in your market before placing a deposit.
What exactly is being compared?
The U.S. comparison is between the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric and the 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive. Mercedes says its GLC arrives at U.S. dealerships in fall 2026. BMW announced a September 25, 2026 U.S. market launch, with deliveries expected from fall 2026 and reservations beginning in early May 2026.

Those are launch-market designations, not a complete global lineup. Mercedes’ European announcement covers a GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ Technology, while BMW UK publishes technical data for the iX3 50 xDrive using the WLTP test cycle. U.S. EPA figures, U.S. prices, and U.S. equipment should be used for a U.S. purchase; UK and European numbers are useful only as clearly labeled context.
This distinction matters if you see a different GLC or iX3 in an overseas review. A European GLC specification can have a different motor output, software package, charger, wheels, or standard equipment from the U.S. car. Likewise, a UK technical sheet can describe a 22-kW AC option that is not necessarily fitted to a North American vehicle. Match every review, quote, and charging claim to the market and exact trim on your order form.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Price: the BMW starts lower, before options
| Vehicle and market | Published starting price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric (U.S.) | $63,500 MSRP | Mercedes-Benz U.S. quick reference dated April 1, 2026; options, taxes, registration, and dealer charges are extra. |
| 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive (U.S.) | $61,500 MSRP plus $1,350 destination and handling | BMW Group PressClub USA announcement; options, taxes, registration, and dealer charges are extra. |
| GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ Technology (Germany at European launch) | €71,281 | European launch price announced in 2025; it is not a U.S. transaction price. |
On the published U.S. numbers, the BMW’s base MSRP is $2,000 below the Mercedes. Adding BMW’s stated destination and handling charge makes the gap $650 before options and local fees. That does not establish which vehicle will be cheaper at a dealership: equipment packaging, paint, wheels, financing, incentives, markups, and delivery dates can change the amount you actually pay.
What to verify in a quote
- Ask whether the quoted vehicle is the exact 50 xDrive or GLC 400 4MATIC Electric launch trim.
- Separate MSRP, destination, documentation fees, taxes, registration, and optional equipment.
- Check current federal, state, utility, employer, and lease incentives rather than assuming either vehicle qualifies.
- Get the vehicle identification number and the window sticker once inventory is assigned; range and standard equipment can vary with wheels and tires.
Also compare like-for-like equipment. A lower base price may not include the same driver-assistance, suspension, wheel, audio, or charging-service content. Ask each dealer for an itemized build sheet rather than comparing two advertisements with different option bundles. If you lease, compare the total due at signing and total scheduled payments, not only the advertised monthly figure; the published MSRP figures alone do not predict lease cost.
Range: EPA and WLTP numbers are not interchangeable
| Vehicle and test cycle | Published range | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| GLC 400 4MATIC Electric, U.S. | 350 miles EPA; 331 miles with all-season tires | Mercedes-Benz U.S. manufacturer figures; the tire-specific value is lower. |
| BMW iX3 50 xDrive, U.S. | Up to 434 miles EPA | BMW’s announced maximum; verify the final EPA label and the vehicle’s configuration. |
| GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ Technology, Europe | Up to 715 km WLTP | European test-cycle result, approximately 444 miles as a unit conversion; not an EPA rating. |
| BMW iX3 50 xDrive, UK | 454–500 miles WLTP | UK technical range band; it cannot substitute for U.S. EPA certification. |
For an American shopper comparing the announced maximum EPA figures, BMW has the stronger headline: up to 434 miles versus 350 miles for the GLC, or 331 miles when the Mercedes uses all-season tires. The difference is large enough to matter for long commutes and road trips, but it is not proof that one car will travel farther on your route. Speed, temperature, wind, elevation, cargo, wheel choice, tire pressure, and climate control all affect consumption.
How to compare the range you will actually get
- Identify the wheel and tire package on the specific vehicle. Mercedes explicitly lists a 19-mile difference between its standard range figure and the all-season-tire figure.
- Use the EPA label for a U.S. vehicle and the WLTP result for a UK or European vehicle. Do not rank a 434-mile EPA result against a 500-mile WLTP result as if they were the same test.
- Map your longest regular trip with a reserve for weather, traffic, and an unavailable fast charger.
- Ask the dealer for the usable battery and software configuration shown on the final specification sheet; the published announcements do not establish every market’s usable-energy figure.
Think in charging stops rather than brochure miles. A driver who starts each day at home may rarely need the full battery, while an apartment resident who relies on public stations may value dependable station spacing more than the maximum rating. On a winter highway trip, leave extra margin for cabin heat, wind, and slower charging, and identify a second station before the battery reaches the navigation system’s minimum arrival estimate.
Charging: similar headline times, different published details
| Specification | Mercedes GLC 400 U.S. | BMW iX3 50 xDrive UK technical data |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum DC charging power | 330 kW | Up to 400 kW |
| Published DC session | 10–80% in 22 minutes | Minimum 21 minutes for 10–80% |
| Added range in 10 minutes | Not stated in the U.S. quick reference | 192–231 miles, UK/WLTP context |
| AC charging power | 11.5 kW | Up to 11 or 22 kW, depending on configuration and market |
| Published AC 0–100% time | 10 hours | 11 hours at 11 kW or 5.5 hours at 22 kW |
The stated fast-charge times are close, but they are not a same-condition test. Mercedes’ 22-minute figure is a U.S. specification; BMW’s 21-minute figure is a UK minimum. BMW’s 400-kW peak is higher than Mercedes’ 330-kW rating, yet peak power is only one point on a charging curve. Battery temperature, starting state of charge, charger sharing, station limits, and the car’s power taper determine how long a real stop takes.

Note: WiFi is needed for certain functionalities and troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise.
- Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
Choose by route compatibility, not peak kW
- Check which high-power networks are on your normal highways and whether they reliably deliver the car’s required connector and output.
- For a road trip, compare the 10–80% stop time, station spacing, payment method, and backup locations.
- Use the navigation system’s battery-preconditioning strategy if provided, because a cold or hot pack may charge more slowly than the headline specification.
- Remember that a 400-kW station does not force 400 kW into the vehicle; the vehicle, battery state, and station together set the actual rate.
Public-station access can be as important as the vehicle rating. Check whether your preferred network appears in the car’s route planner, whether the station supports automatic authentication, and whether an account or subscription is required. Mercedes describes automated station reservation at Mercedes-Benz charging hubs through MB.CHARGE Public, but connected-service availability can vary by market and plan. Confirm the practical details before assuming a feature shown in a launch presentation is active on your vehicle.
Home charging and electrical requirements
Mercedes’ U.S. guide lists an 11.5-kW AC limit and a 10-hour 0–100% AC time. BMW UK lists up to 11 or 22 kW and corresponding minimum times of 11 or 5.5 hours. Those BMW values are UK-market technical data, so a U.S. buyer must confirm the North American onboard charger and connector on the ordered car.

- Ask the dealer for the vehicle-market charging specification, connector type, and maximum AC input for the exact trim.
- Have a licensed electrician check the service panel, spare capacity, wire run, breaker size, grounding, and local permit requirements.
- Decide whether overnight charging at your available amperage covers your normal driving. A lower-power installation may be sufficient if the car sits at home for many hours.
- Confirm the charger’s voltage and amperage settings match the vehicle and home circuit. Do not assume a higher-rated wall unit makes the car charge faster than its onboard limit.
- Keep a public-charging fallback for travel, outages, and unusually high mileage days.
A Level 2 home charger can make either SUV easier to live with, but the correct unit depends on the car’s AC limit, the connector used in your market, and the electrical capacity at your address. Obtain an installation assessment and a written quote for permits, panel work, conduit, and cable distance. The vehicle’s onboard limit still governs charging speed, so an oversized wall unit is not automatically a benefit.
Performance and driving hardware
Mercedes’ U.S. quick-reference material identifies the GLC 400 as having a quicker estimated 0–60 mph time than the BMW figure published in the available UK data, but it does not provide a directly comparable number in the cited U.S. summary. BMW UK lists the iX3 50 xDrive at 345 kW, 645 Nm, 0–62 mph in 4.9 seconds, and a 130-mph top speed. Because 0–60 mph and 0–62 mph are different measures and the markets differ, those figures should not be treated as a laboratory comparison.
Mercedes lists optional rear-axle steering, reducing the stated wall-to-wall turning circle from 39.7 to 36.7 feet, and optional AIRMATIC air suspension. These options can materially affect maneuverability, ride tuning, price, and availability. Schedule a drive over rough pavement, tight parking ramps, and highway merges rather than choosing from acceleration figures alone.

Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.

Acceleration is only one part of the driving decision. Check pedal calibration in stop-and-go traffic, one-pedal settings, braking feel, steering weight, and how the SUV manages regenerative braking on a descent. The published figures do not establish ride comfort, cabin quietness, or driver-assistance behavior, so those are reasons to drive both cars on the same route.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSize and cargo: the quoted measurements use different units
| Measurement | Mercedes GLC 400 U.S. | BMW iX3 50 xDrive UK |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 190.7 inches | 4,782 mm (about 188.3 inches) |
| Width, excluding mirrors | 75.3 inches | 1,895 mm (about 74.6 inches) |
| Height | 64.7 inches | 1,635 mm (about 64.4 inches) |
| Wheelbase | 117 inches | 2,897 mm (about 114.1 inches) |
| Rear luggage/trunk capacity | 20.1–61.4 cubic feet | 520–1,750 litres (about 18.4–61.8 cubic feet) |
| Front storage | 4.5 cubic feet | 58 litres (about 2.0 cubic feet) |
| Braked towing | Not stated in the U.S. quick reference | Up to 2,000 kg, UK specification |
The Mercedes figures are U.S. cubic-foot measurements; BMW’s are UK litres. The conversions above are approximate for orientation, not independent cargo testing. On the published numbers, both offer roughly 61–62 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, while Mercedes reports a substantially larger front compartment. BMW’s towing figure is not a U.S. certification and should not be used to plan a U.S. trailer without a local rating.
Conduct a useful cargo test
- Bring the stroller, suitcases, sports equipment, or work cases you actually carry.
- Measure the opening height and floor length, not just the maximum brochure volume.
- Check whether the rear seats fold flat and whether the underfloor compartment fits charging cables.
- Open the frunk with the hood, cargo cover, and charging equipment in their normal positions.
- Install your child seats and test front-seat clearance before deciding that a larger quoted volume solves your needs.
Volume is measured differently by manufacturers, and a maximum figure may include space above a cargo cover or up to the roof. Compare the loading lip, seat-folding mechanism, tie-down points, and visibility through the rear glass. If you tow, verify the U.S. rating, tongue-weight limit, hitch hardware, and whether towing changes the vehicle’s range and charging plan.
Cabin technology and everyday usability
Mercedes positions MB.OS as the software layer integrating infotainment, driver assistance, comfort controls, and charging functions. Its U.S. newsroom also describes automated station reservation at Mercedes-Benz charging hubs through MB.CHARGE Public. Availability of individual functions, connected services, and subscriptions can depend on market and plan.
BMW highlights Panoramic iDrive and its Heart of Joy driving-control system. BMW also reports that the iX3 received the 2026 World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle awards from a jury of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries, selected from an initial field of 58 contenders. That is a named industry recognition, not evidence that its interface, ride, reliability, or driver assistance will suit every owner.

What a test drive can answer
- Can you read the main display in direct sun, and can you change climate settings without hunting through menus?
- Do the seat, steering-wheel, mirror, and camera views provide the visibility you need?
- Is the ride comfortable on broken pavement and quiet at highway speed?
- Does the driver-assistance system behave predictably on your local roads?
- Can every regular driver pair a phone, adjust profiles, and find charging controls easily?
Official specifications cannot settle those subjective questions. Drive both vehicles back-to-back on the same roads and spend time in the second row.

A buyer with a long daily commute and limited charging access may place more value on the BMW’s announced range, while a household that regularly uses a front storage compartment or wants Mercedes’ software ecosystem may prefer the GLC. Neither conclusion can be made from range or price alone if the nearest dealer cannot supply the desired configuration or service support is inconvenient.
Purchase and delivery checklist
- Choose your market first. Use U.S. EPA, price, connector, and equipment data for a U.S. purchase; use UK or European WLTP data only for those markets.
- Print the final build sheet and window sticker, including wheels, tires, suspension, steering, towing equipment, and driver-assistance packages.
- Ask for the certified range, usable battery information, AC limit, DC curve guidance, and warranty terms in writing.
- Check local inventory and the estimated delivery date. Both manufacturers’ launch timing is forward-looking and can change by region.
- Price home electrical work and public charging access before signing. The cheapest vehicle can become the less convenient choice if charging is difficult.
- Complete a back-to-back test drive with your normal passengers, luggage, child seats, and phone.
Recheck all numbers immediately before signing. Mercedes’ quick reference is dated April 1, 2026, and BMW’s launch announcements describe planned timing and maximum figures; certification, standard equipment, and inventory can change. Save the final window sticker and the dealer’s written quote so a later wheel, tire, or option substitution is visible.
Bottom line for a U.S. shopper
Based on the announced launch figures, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive is the logical starting point for a buyer who values the lower published entry MSRP and the highest claimed EPA range. The Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric makes a stronger case if its quicker estimated acceleration, larger stated frunk, MB.OS experience, rear-axle-steering option, or local dealer support better match your priorities.
That verdict remains conditional until each vehicle’s final EPA certification, configuration, transaction price, inventory, and delivery date are confirmed. Choose the SUV that performs best on your actual route, fits your cargo and charging routine, and feels right after driving both—not the one with the most impressive isolated number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the BMW iX3 cheaper than the electric Mercedes GLC?
The announced U.S. BMW iX3 50 xDrive MSRP is $61,500, plus $1,350 destination and handling. Mercedes lists $63,500 for the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric. That leaves a $650 difference after BMW’s stated destination charge, before options, taxes, incentives, dealer fees, or markups.
Which has more range, the GLC Electric or BMW iX3?
BMW announces up to 434 miles EPA for the U.S. iX3 50 xDrive. Mercedes lists 350 miles EPA for the GLC, or 331 miles with all-season tires. Verify the final EPA label and wheel-and-tire setup; those figures do not prove real-world range on every route.
How fast do they charge?
Mercedes lists 10–80% DC charging in 22 minutes at up to 330 kW. BMW UK lists a minimum 21-minute 10–80% session and up to 400 kW. The BMW data are UK-market figures, and actual time depends on temperature, starting charge, station output, and the charging curve.
Which has more cargo space?
Mercedes quotes 20.1–61.4 cubic feet of trunk space plus a 4.5-cubic-foot frunk. BMW UK quotes 520–1,750 litres of luggage space and a 58-litre front compartment. Units and measurement methods differ, so test your own bags, stroller, child seats, and charging cables.
Can either SUV tow 2,000 kg?
BMW publishes up to 2,000 kg braked towing capacity for the UK iX3 specification. That is not a U.S. certification. Confirm the local tow rating, hitch equipment, tongue-weight limit, and range impact before towing in America.
What should I check before ordering?
Confirm the exact market trim, EPA or WLTP test cycle, wheel and tire package, connector, onboard AC limit, final options, incentives, dealer inventory, delivery date, and local service support. A back-to-back test drive and home-charging assessment are essential.
The Bottom Line
For the announced U.S. launch versions, BMW leads on published entry price and maximum EPA range; Mercedes offers a quicker estimated acceleration figure, a larger stated frunk, and distinctive MB.OS and charging-service features. Verify certification, equipment, charging access, transaction price, and availability, then choose the SUV that fits your route and daily use.
