Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e review: one of the best plug-in hybrid SUVs, not a perfect one

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e offers nearly 60 miles of real-world electric ability, 313 hp and long-distance flexibility, but its efficiency depends on regular charging and its PHEV battery cuts boot space.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e is not a perfect plug-in hybrid SUV, but it may be one of the best all-rounders. The current UK and European X254 model combines 313 hp, 4MATIC all-wheel drive, a reported electric range approaching 80 miles under official testing and the ability to use petrol for long journeys. That is a powerful combination for a driver who can charge at home or work.

It is a much weaker proposition for anyone who will rarely plug in. The battery reduces boot space from the ordinary GLC’s 620 litres to approximately 470 litres, the car carries the cost and complexity of two powertrains, and its spectacular weighted WLTP fuel-consumption figure is not a normal real-world expectation. This is a review of whether the GLC 300e deserves the word perfect—and the answer is no, although it is highly recommendable for the right use case.

At a glance

Item Current UK/European GLC 300 e 4MATIC
Model generation Second-generation X254
Powertrain 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, electric motor, high-voltage battery, nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive
System output 230 kW / 313 hp
0–62 mph 6.7 seconds
Official weighted WLTP fuel consumption 0.6–0.5 l/100 km
Official weighted WLTP electricity consumption 22.5–20.4 kWh/100 km
Reported electric range Approaching 80 miles officially; almost 60 miles in one independent UK test
Boot space Approximately 470 litres with the rear seats up, and about 1,530 litres folded
Charging Stationary AC charging via Mode 2 or Mode 3; current versions can accept up to 11 kW where the vehicle and electrical installation support it

The verdict: the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e is not a perfect plug-in hybrid SUV, but it is one of the most convincing all-round premium PHEVs for buyers who can charge regularly. Its long electric range, quiet progress, comfortable cabin and unrestricted petrol-engine touring make it unusually versatile. The compromises are substantial purchase cost, reduced boot space, extra powertrain complexity and efficiency that depends heavily on plugging in.

This review covers the current X254 GLC 300 e 4MATIC sold in the UK and much of Europe. The closely related US-market vehicle is called the GLC 350e, not the GLC 300e, and its EPA range, charging capability and equipment should not be merged with the European car.

What is the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e?

The GLC 300e combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a high-voltage battery. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends power through Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel drive. It is therefore neither a conventional hybrid that charges only through braking and the engine nor a battery-electric SUV: it is designed to cover regular journeys on electricity, then use petrol when the battery is depleted or a longer journey exceeds the electric range.

Mercedes-Benz quotes a combined system output of 230 kW, equivalent to 313 hp, and a 0–62 mph time of 6.7 seconds for the current UK model. The same performance figure is commonly expressed as 0–100 km/h in European technical data. That makes the GLC 300e brisk enough for everyday driving and motorway joining, although it is not intended to be a sports SUV.

The most important point is that this is a large, relatively sophisticated plug-in hybrid system installed in a family-sized luxury SUV. The battery is much more useful than the small batteries fitted to many older PHEVs, but it also takes up luggage space and adds hardware and weight. That trade-off explains both the GLC 300e’s appeal and why the word perfect goes too far.

Electric range: the reason to choose it

The GLC 300e’s central advantage is its ability to handle a meaningful proportion of normal driving without starting the petrol engine. UK coverage of the current car describes an official electric range approaching 80 miles. In independent use, What Car? reported almost 60 miles. The latter is a more helpful expectation for buyers than treating the best laboratory figure as a promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither figure should be treated as universal. Electric range changes with outside temperature, heating or air-conditioning use, speed, traffic, terrain, wheel and tyre specification, passenger load and driving style. A weekday commute at urban and suburban speeds may come close to the better results. Sustained motorway driving, winter temperatures and a fully loaded car will reduce the distance available.

Use case What the GLC 300e is likely to offer
Short urban and suburban journeys Its strongest use case. Quiet electric driving and regenerative braking can cover many routine trips without petrol.
Daily commuting within the usable electric range Potentially very efficient if the car is charged before each departure and charging is available at home or work.
Mixed commuting with occasional longer detours Still useful, because the petrol engine provides a reserve when the battery range is exceeded.
Regular high-speed motorway travel Less compelling. Air resistance and speed reduce electric range, and fuel consumption rises once the battery’s useful charge is gone.
Mostly long journeys with no regular charging The weakest case. You carry the battery and hybrid hardware without consistently using the main efficiency benefit.

That last point matters more than the headline WLTP number. A plug-in hybrid only earns its efficiency advantage when the owner changes the routine: plug in, drive electrically where practical, and use petrol for journeys that genuinely need it. Used as an uncharged petrol SUV, the GLC 300e is an expensive way to transport a heavy battery.

WLTP fuel economy: read the number carefully

Mercedes-Benz launch information gives the GLC 300e a weighted WLTP fuel-consumption figure of 0.6–0.5 l/100 km and weighted electricity consumption of 22.5–20.4 kWh/100 km. Those are laboratory figures calculated with substantial electric driving included. They are not a forecast of the fuel economy you will see on a long motorway trip, nor are they an indication of what happens after the battery has been used.

For ownership planning, ask three more useful questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. How far do you normally drive between charges? Compare the answer with a realistic, weather-adjusted electric range rather than the best official figure.
  2. Where will you charge? Home or workplace charging makes the system convenient. Reliance on occasional public charging makes the routine less predictable.
  3. How often do you drive beyond the electric range? A few annual holidays do not undermine the concept; several long motorway journeys every week may.

Electricity and petrol prices also vary by country, tariff and tax treatment. It is not responsible to promise a particular saving without knowing the owner’s mileage, charging tariff, petrol price and tax position.

Charging the GLC 300e

The current X254 GLC supports stationary AC charging through Mode 2 and Mode 3 equipment, according to Mercedes-Benz owner documentation. Available market documentation indicates that current-generation versions can accept AC charging at up to 11 kW when the vehicle, cable and electrical supply are all suitable. Many homes will charge at a lower single-phase rate, so the maximum figure should not be confused with the rate every household can achieve.

Mode 2 generally refers to a portable charging arrangement, while Mode 3 is the dedicated AC equipment used by a wallbox or public AC post. The exact cable supplied with a particular vehicle, the onboard-charging specification, connector rating, phase supply and local installation all matter. Check the car’s VIN-specific equipment and owner documentation rather than relying only on a generic online listing.

If you have off-street parking, a certified installer should assess the electrical supply before you buy. A 7–11 kW home EV wallbox and installation can make the GLC 300e’s electric range much easier to use, but the appropriate rating depends on the vehicle specification and the property. Installation rules, grants and available charging brands vary by country and can change over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A second cable may also be useful if one is kept at home and another at work. Before buying a Type 2 cable for Mercedes GLC 300e, check the model year, charging mode, single- or three-phase requirement, amperage, connector type, cable length and what is already included with the car. Aftermarket Type 2 cables are not automatically interchangeable simply because the connector looks right.

Do not transfer US charging claims to the European GLC 300e. Mercedes-Benz and independent reviewers report that the US-market GLC 350e can have up to 54 miles of EPA electric range and DC fast charging up to 60 kW, with a claimed 10–80% charging time of around 30 minutes. Those are US-market GLC 350e figures, measured and specified under a different market regime; they are not UK GLC 300e specifications.

How does the GLC 300e drive?

The powertrain’s character is more impressive for refinement than for drama. Electric drive gives the car immediate low-speed response and allows it to move around town quietly. When the petrol engine is needed, the 313-hp system has ample performance for normal overtaking and motorway work. The combination is particularly appealing for an owner who wants silent short trips without giving up the ability to travel long distances without planning every stop around a charger.

Independent testing of the closely related US GLC 350e describes the PHEV as quiet, responsive and confident. Those observations are useful context, but they should not be presented as a personal test of the UK-badged 300e. The European model’s headline powertrain layout and general driving character are closely related, while market equipment and calibration can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The regular current-generation GLC is generally regarded as composed and car-like, with accurate steering and a mature, easy-going attitude. Autocar’s assessment is more qualified: the chassis is poised and controlled, but the steering offers limited feedback and the ride is competent rather than exceptional. That is a fair description of the GLC 300e’s role. It is a comfortable luxury crossover for covering distance with little effort, not a driver’s SUV in the mould of a lightweight sports car.

The plug-in hybrid hardware introduces another compromise. The battery and associated equipment add mass, so the 300e is unlikely to feel as light and agile as a non-PHEV GLC on a demanding road. Electric assistance can disguise that weight in town, but braking, quick direction changes and uneven surfaces make the underlying trade-off easier to notice. For most owners, the gain in quietness and electric usability will matter more than the loss of ultimate agility.

Interior, technology and comfort

The GLC’s cabin makes a strong first impression. Its main attractions are the display technology, modern layout, comfortable seats and quiet environment rather than universally exceptional tactile quality.

Depending on trim and market, Mercedes-Benz equipment information lists a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and an 11.9-inch portrait-oriented central media display. MBUX navigation, voice control, blind-spot assistance, active lane-keeping assistance, active brake assistance, parking assistance, electrically adjustable front seats with memory and dual-zone climate control are among the available or listed features, but equipment must be checked against the exact trim.

The interfaces are visually impressive and give the cabin a high-tech character. However, Autocar has criticised some switchgear as flimsy relative to the premium price, arguing that Mercedes-Benz has placed considerable emphasis on visual impact. That does not make the interior poor. It means the luxury experience is strongest in the design, screens, seats, silence and general ambience, rather than in every individual button or trim piece.

Before ordering, confirm whether the features that matter to you are standard, optional or restricted to a particular trim. A brochure’s equipment list may cover a model range rather than the exact car on a dealer forecourt. Check the central display, driver-assistance settings, parking-camera specification, seat adjustment and charging controls in person.

Rear-seat room and boot space

Passenger space remains one of the GLC’s strengths. It provides a useful rear bench and a comfortable driving position for a mid-sized premium SUV. It is well suited to carrying adults and children, although it should not be mistaken for a larger luxury SUV with limousine-like rear accommodation.

The boot is the more obvious compromise. Mercedes-Benz material lists 620 litres for the ordinary GLC, but approximately 470 litres for the GLC 300e. Independent coverage gives the same approximate 470-litre figure with the rear seats raised and about 1,530 litres with them folded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 150-litre reduction is meaningful. It may not matter to a couple with modest luggage, but it can affect a family carrying a bulky pushchair, dog crate, pram accessories, bicycles or holiday bags. The rear seats still fold for larger loads, but the battery-related loss is a reason to test your own equipment before committing.

Take a pushchair, travel cot, golf bag or dog crate to the dealer if it is part of your normal life. A boot measurement on paper cannot show whether the available shape and floor height work for your particular load. This is one of the clearest reasons the GLC 300e is excellent for some buyers but not perfect for everyone.

Ownership costs and tax

The GLC 300e’s financial case depends on usage more than the badge. The purchase or lease price is only one part of the calculation; insurance, servicing, tyres, charging equipment, electricity, petrol and eventual battery- or powertrain-related complexity also matter. The lower certified CO2 figure can be valuable in company-car markets where PHEVs receive favourable treatment, and Autocar identifies petrol and diesel GLC PHEVs as potentially cost-effective company-car choices.

That benefit is not universal. Benefit-in-kind bands, tax rates, incentives and lease pricing depend on the buyer’s country, tax year, CO2 certification, electric range and employer policy. They can change, so obtain a current calculation for the exact registration date and market rather than using an old review or a generic online estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a private buyer, the fuel-saving argument is strongest when frequent short trips are completed on inexpensive home or workplace electricity. If charging is inconvenient or the car spends most of its time on long trips, a simpler hybrid or an efficient petrol model may be easier to justify. If nearly every journey fits the available electric range and home charging is reliable, a full battery-electric SUV may offer a simpler electric ownership experience; the GLC 300e’s advantage is the petrol engine’s flexibility when long-distance charging is inconvenient.

Reliability, servicing and warranty questions

The available research does not provide a sufficiently authoritative, current, model-specific long-term reliability dataset for the X254 GLC 300e. It would be misleading to label the car reliable or unreliable based on forum anecdotes, isolated owner complaints or a brand-level ranking.

There is, however, an obvious structural consideration: a PHEV combines a petrol engine, electric motor, high-voltage battery, transmission, charging hardware, cooling systems and all-wheel-drive components. That does not establish a failure rate, but it does mean there are more systems to understand than in a straightforward petrol car.

Ask the retailer for the exact vehicle warranty, high-voltage battery warranty, roadside-assistance terms and servicing schedule applicable in your country. Confirm what happens if the car is bought used, whether warranty work requires an authorised facility, and whether charging equipment is covered separately. Terms are market-specific and can change; do not rely on a warranty figure copied from another country or an earlier X253 model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GLC 300e versus its main rivals

The natural alternatives include the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid, Volvo XC60 Recharge, Audi Q5 TFSI e and Lexus NX 450h+. Depending on budget and market, larger or more performance-focused PHEV SUVs also enter the discussion.

The right comparison is not simply the longest advertised range. Ask each manufacturer or retailer for comparable answers on:

  • electric range under the same test standard;
  • usable boot space with the PHEV battery fitted;
  • AC and, where relevant, DC charging capability;
  • real rear-seat space and the shape of the load area;
  • standard versus optional driver-assistance and comfort equipment;
  • warranty coverage for the battery and hybrid system; and
  • the tax position and total lease or ownership cost in your market.

The GLC 300e’s strongest differentiators are its substantial electric capability, premium cabin presentation, all-wheel drive, smooth long-distance manners and broad ability to cover both urban and touring roles. Its weaknesses are the boot-space penalty, premium price, powertrain complexity and the risk that a full EV or simpler hybrid is a better match for the buyer’s routine.

Who should buy the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e?

It is a strong choice for:

  • drivers with dependable home or workplace charging;
  • commuters whose normal daily mileage fits within a realistic electric range;
  • company-car users who receive a meaningful local tax benefit;
  • buyers wanting one vehicle for quiet urban trips and unrestricted petrol-assisted long-distance travel;
  • families that can live with approximately 470 litres of boot space; and
  • owners who value comfort, silence and premium technology more than sharp handling.

Choose something else if:

  • you cannot charge regularly;
  • maximum luggage capacity is more important than electric driving;
  • your priority is the lowest possible long-term running cost;
  • you want a genuinely sporting SUV with strong steering feedback; or
  • most journeys fit a full EV’s range and you have convenient access to charging.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the generation. Make sure the car is the current X254. The earlier X253 was also sold as a GLC 300e, but it used a smaller 13.5 kWh battery and 7.4 kW AC charging, so its figures and equipment cannot be used for the current car.
  2. Confirm the market and badge. A European GLC 300e is not the same specification as the US GLC 350e. Check the local technical sheet rather than importing range or fast-charging claims from an American review.
  3. Check charging access before negotiating the car. Calculate where the vehicle will charge, how long it can remain plugged in and whether your electrical supply supports the desired rate.
  4. Verify the exact charging equipment. Check which cables are supplied, the connector type, amperage, cable length and whether a wallbox is included or separately priced.
  5. Test the boot with your own equipment. The PHEV’s approximately 470-litre boot is considerably smaller than the ordinary GLC’s 620 litres.
  6. Drive it charged and uncharged. The car’s quietness and low-speed response are best judged with battery charge available, while the petrol-engine transition, ride and braking should also be assessed after the electric contribution is reduced.
  7. Obtain current tax and warranty information. Use the country, registration year, trim and exact battery warranty terms that apply to your purchase.
  8. Compare total cost, not just fuel economy. Include charging installation, electricity, petrol, insurance, servicing, tyres, finance or lease payments and likely usage over the period you expect to keep the car.

Verdict: is it the perfect plug-in hybrid SUV?

No. The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e is expensive, its battery reduces boot capacity, its real electric range varies considerably, and its headline WLTP fuel economy depends on regular charging. It also has the inherent complexity of combining two propulsion systems in one premium SUV.

But for the right driver, it is an exceptionally complete package. The current X254 GLC 300e is fast enough, quiet around town, comfortable on longer journeys, equipped with a convincing high-tech cabin and capable of replacing petrol with electricity for a substantial share of everyday driving. It avoids the range anxiety and route planning that can make a full EV inconvenient for occasional long-distance users, while offering far more electric usefulness than many older PHEVs.

Our recommendation is therefore conditional: buy the GLC 300e if you can charge at home or work and will routinely use its electric range. If you cannot, its weight, price and reduced boot make a simpler hybrid, petrol SUV or full EV more rational. It is one of the best all-round premium plug-in hybrid SUVs, but only when the owner’s routine is designed around plugging it in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the current GLC 300e the same as the older GLC 300e?

The current UK and European GLC 300 e is the second-generation X254. The earlier X253 also used the GLC 300e name but had a smaller 13.5 kWh battery and 7.4 kW AC charging. Always verify the generation before comparing specifications.

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e the same car as the US GLC 350e?

No. The US-market equivalent is called the GLC 350e. US reports quote up to 54 miles of EPA electric range and DC fast charging up to 60 kW, but those figures should not be presented as UK GLC 300e specifications.

How far can the GLC 300e travel on electric power?

UK reporting describes an official electric range approaching 80 miles, while What Car? achieved almost 60 miles in independent use. Motorway speeds, cold weather, heating, load and driving style can reduce the result.

How does the GLC 300e charge?

It supports stationary AC charging through Mode 2 and Mode 3 equipment. Current-generation versions can accept up to 11 kW in suitable installations, although the actual rate depends on the vehicle specification, cable and electrical supply. Do not assume US-market DC charging claims apply to the European car.

Is the GLC 300e worth buying if I cannot charge at home?

It is most suitable for owners with home or workplace charging whose regular journeys fit within a realistic electric range. If it is rarely charged, a simpler hybrid or petrol SUV may offer a more rational ownership case, while drivers who can complete nearly every trip electrically may prefer a full EV.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The GLC 300e is a highly capable premium PHEV rather than a perfect one. Its long electric range and petrol-powered long-distance flexibility are compelling for regular chargers; without dependable charging, the smaller boot, higher cost and added complexity are difficult to justify.
