For a modern used E-Class sedan, the W212 is the most defensible first choice, the W213 is a promising but less proven alternative, and the W211 warrants the most careful screening. That is a provisional comparison, not a universal reliability score: the available sources use different methods, and a particular car’s condition, engine, maintenance and repair history matter more than its generation badge. The older W124 and W210 are best treated as condition-sensitive classic purchases, while the W214 is too new to rank confidently.
Modern E-Class generations ranked by reliability
This ranking is for shoppers comparing mature modern E-Class sedans, not a claim that every car within a generation shares the same reliability. It synthesizes secondary model-year analysis and complaint-history comparisons rather than one standardized, generation-by-generation reliability study.
- W212 — strongest provisional used-car target. REREV identifies 2012 and 2015 among its best W212 model years. ForCar’s complaint-based comparison also places 2011 among its stronger years. These results support the generation as a sensible shortlist choice, but they do not establish one uncontested best year or guarantee a specific car will be trouble-free.
- W213 — promising, with less mature history. REREV favors 2020 and 2021, while ForCar places 2018 among its stronger years. The variation is a reason to check the exact car and year rather than treat any one model-year verdict as definitive.
- W211 — inspect most cautiously among the modern generations. REREV calls the W211 the weakest modern generation in its assessment, particularly flagging 2003–2007; it describes 2008–2009 as improved. Its discussion highlights M272 balance-shaft problems and early 7G-Tronic transmission issues. These are screening prompts: they do not mean every W211 has either fault, and the exact engine, transmission and repair history matter.
REREV’s model-year assessments and ForCar’s complaint comparisons are secondary analyses with different methods. ForCar says it reviewed 19 E-Class model years with enough history and groups NHTSA complaints by production run; its page snapshot reports 2,130 E-Class owner complaints overall. Complaints are owner reports, not a count of every failure, and reporting exposure varies. Treat those comparisons as directional rather than as failure rates.
Where the older and newest generations fit
W124 and W210: judge the individual car
The W124 and W210 are historic, age-sensitive purchases, so they should not be forced into a direct reliability contest with newer used cars. Rust exposure, survivor condition, maintenance records and the quality of any restoration can dominate the ownership outlook. The reviewed sources do not establish a directly comparable modern reliability rate for either generation.

CarGarages’ 2026-accessed UK MOT overview displays approximately 242,000 W124 tests and 677,000 W210 tests. It lists driver-seat faults as the leading issue shown for both. Those are MOT observations, not proof that driver seats are their most common mechanical breakdown or that one generation is more reliable than the other.
W214: too new for a confident verdict
The W214 does not yet have enough history for a fair reliability ranking. CarGarages’ 2026-accessed page shows 178 UK MOT tests for 2023–2025 cars, while REREV says a meaningful complaint record is not yet available. A low number of reports for a new generation can simply reflect limited time and exposure, not low failure risk.

What the available numbers can—and cannot—tell you
CarGarages says its broader MOT failure table draws on 20 years of DVSA data. Its displayed generation test counts are approximate sample sizes, not normalized reliability rates: they do not show the share of cars that failed, account for how often or under what conditions each car was tested, or make generations directly comparable. The leading issues shown are also specific to UK MOT findings.

These are counts of tests, not unique vehicles or failure rates. In particular, a high count is not evidence of greater risk, and the W214’s small count cannot establish that it is more reliable. UK MOT findings, US NHTSA owner complaints and REREV’s broader secondary synthesis measure different things; none should be substituted for another.

How to compare two actual E-Class sedans
Use the generation ranking to decide what deserves attention, then evaluate the individual car. A documented repair on a known issue may be a better prospect than an apparently more desirable year with missing records.
- Confirm the model year and exact configuration. Check the vehicle identification details, engine code and transmission rather than relying only on a seller’s generation label. For a W211, establish whether the car has the M272 engine or an early 7G-Tronic configuration before investigating the specific concerns REREV identifies.
- Read the service and repair records. Look for a credible, continuous history and invoices or other documentation for significant repairs. Do not treat a generation reputation as evidence that a repair was completed.
- Check local inspection history. In the UK, MOT records can help show a car’s inspection history and recurring faults. Interpret them as inspection evidence, not as a complete record of mechanical reliability; do not compare an MOT pattern directly with US complaint data.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection where appropriate. Ask the inspector to assess the specific car’s condition and investigate any concerns raised by its configuration, records or inspection history.
- Check recalls by VIN in the vehicle’s market. Use the official recall service for the country where the car is registered, then confirm whether any applicable remedy has been completed. Mercedes-Benz USA’s Recall Information service is for US vehicles and excludes recall information before 1990; it is not a lookup for every market. The manufacturer describes it as a way to check applicable US recall campaigns, not as an independent reliability assessment.
Verdict
For a modern used E-Class sedan, start with a well-documented W212, consider a W213 after checking its exact year and condition, and scrutinize a W211’s engine, transmission and repair records particularly closely. Treat W124 and W210 cars as individual classic-condition decisions, and wait for more history before drawing a firm reliability conclusion about the W214.
