The U.S.-market Acura RDX has three generations: the first spans model years 2007–2012, the second 2013–2018, and the third 2019–2026. The 2016 RDX is a refresh within the second generation, not a separate generation. Acura’s current U.S. product page lists a 2026 RDX; that is the latest model year verified here, not an announced end date for the generation.

First generation: 2007–2012
2007–2009: original turbo-four and SH-AWD
Acura introduced the RDX for model year 2007 as a five-passenger premium crossover. Its original powertrain paired a turbocharged 2.3-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder with a five-speed automatic, and the vehicle launched with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). Acura described it as the brand’s first turbocharged model.
2010–2012: two-wheel drive joins the lineup
For 2010, Acura updated styling and features and offered two-wheel drive alongside SH-AWD. Acura’s chronology lists no changes for the 2011 and 2012 model years. The first generation therefore ends with the 2012 model.

Second generation: 2013–2018
2013: V-6 redesign
The redesigned 2013 RDX replaced the first generation’s turbocharged four-cylinder with a 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 273 hp in Acura’s chronology. A six-speed automatic and a choice of 2WD or SH-AWD completed the core powertrain changes.
Acura referred to the new vehicle as following in 2012, but identified it as the 2013 RDX. For generation comparisons, 2013 is the relevant model-year boundary; the 2012 timing reference does not make a 2012 RDX a second-generation model.

2016: mid-cycle refresh, not a new generation
The 2016 RDX brought restyled interior and exterior details, expanded available AcuraWatch driver-assistance technology and added convenience equipment. Acura characterizes it as a refresh of the 2013 redesign, so 2016 remains part of the second generation. The generation continues through model year 2018.
Third generation: 2019–2026
2019: new platform and turbocharged powertrain
Acura introduced the all-new 2019 RDX with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine rated at 272 hp and 280 lb-ft, a 10-speed automatic and available next-generation SH-AWD. The redesign also introduced the RDX’s first A-Spec variant.

2026: latest model year verified
Acura’s current U.S. product page lists a 2026 RDX with a 272-hp 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo engine and fuel economy of 21 city, 27 highway and 23 combined mpg on that page. Treat those fuel-economy figures as page-listed specifications, not as a guarantee for every drivetrain or configuration; check the specific vehicle’s label and official specifications.
How to identify which RDX generation you are comparing
- Check the model year first. A 2007–2012 RDX is first-generation; 2013–2018 is second-generation; 2019–2026 is the latest range verified here for the third generation.
- Use the powertrain as a cross-check. The first generation is distinguished by its turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder; the second by a 3.5-liter V-6; and the third by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and 10-speed automatic.
- Separate refreshes from redesigns. The 2016 changes are a second-generation refresh, while the 2019 model begins the third generation.
- For a used RDX, compare the exact vehicle. Check model year, package, drivetrain, condition and service records. Generation history alone does not establish an individual vehicle’s condition or suitability.
These are U.S.-market generation dates and specifications documented by Acura. Model histories and equipment can differ in other countries; confirm local-market records before applying this timeline outside the United States.

Acura RDX history in sales context
In its May 29, 2018 announcement of the 2019 RDX, Acura reported more than 375,000 cumulative U.S. RDX sales at that time. That is a historical total from 2018, not a current sales figure. Acura’s announcement.
