A naturally aspirated 6.2-liter car should be considered for its immediate, linear response and traditional AMG feel. A 5.5-liter biturbo car delivers a different, torque-focused character and may include all-wheel drive. Treat them as separate buying propositions rather than assuming the newer engine is automatically preferable.
F10 BMW M5
BMW identifies the U.S. F10 M5 run as 2012–2016. It uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. BMW’s U.S. retrospective lists a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and notes that a six-speed manual was also offered. The F10 is a rear-drive-era M5 in the comparison framework here, making transmission choice and the buyer’s tolerance for rear-drive behavior central to the decision.

BMW says the F90 reached U.S. showrooms for 2018. It paired a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with M xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. That makes it a different type of car from the rear-drive F10: newer, traction-focused and automatic-only in the specification described here.

The tenth-of-a-second difference between the launch F90 M5 and the cited E 63 S is not a buying verdict. The figures come from separate manufacturer releases, not a controlled comparative test, and a used car’s tires, fuel, temperature, maintenance and launch settings can matter more than the published claim.
How the driving experience differs
Engine character
The W212 6.2-liter car is the outlier: naturally aspirated response and a different sound and revving character from every turbocharged car in this comparison. The W212 5.5-liter, F10 and F90 use turbocharged V8s, while the W213 uses a smaller-displacement 4.0-liter biturbo. Which generation suits which buyer?
Choose a W212 6.2-liter E 63 when character comes first
This is the choice for a buyer who specifically wants a naturally aspirated AMG V8 and accepts that age, specification and maintenance history will dominate the purchase. Prioritize an unmodified example with clear records and a specialist inspection. Compare it with an F10 only after deciding whether the engine’s response and rear-drive character matter more to you than newer technology or turbocharged torque.
Choose a W212 5.5-liter E 63 when you want an earlier turbocharged AMG
The 5.5-liter biturbo W212 is the logical E 63 counterpart to the F10’s turbocharged V8 era. Decide first whether the candidate is rear- or all-wheel drive, and whether its equipment and transmission match your use. A facelift S model should be evaluated as its own trim, not as a generic W212.
Choose an F10 M5 when a manual or rear-drive balance matters
The F10 is the clearest choice for someone who wants the BMW M setup of that period, rear-wheel drive and the possibility of a six-speed manual in the U.S. specification described by BMW. The W213 is the E 63 direction to investigate if you want a newer 4.0-liter biturbo V8, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ and the E 63 S equipment represented by Mercedes-Benz USA’s launch specification. Confirm whether the car is an S, the market in which it was sold and the exact installed options.
Choose an F90 M5 for BMW’s newer AWD M formula
The F90 suits a buyer who prefers BMW’s M xDrive system, eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and the later-generation M5 cabin and chassis package. It should be compared directly with a W213 of similar age and condition, not with a naturally aspirated W212.

A step-by-step buying process
1. Record the exact identity of each candidate
- Write down the model year, generation code, body style and trim: for example, W212 E 63, W212 E 63 S, W213 E 63 S, F10 M5 or F90 M5.

The inspection should cover drivetrain leaks, suspension, steering, brakes, tires, cooling, electrical systems, accident repairs and evidence of track or abusive use. A seller’s preferred workshop is not the same as an independent inspection.
6. Price the car using local ownership estimates

Comparing badges instead of generations
An E 63 and an M5 can refer to cars separated by different engines, gearboxes and traction systems. Always create a generation-matched comparison before discussing performance or value.
Treating manufacturer acceleration as a test result
The cited 0–60 figures are manufacturer claims from separate releases. They describe a specification under the maker’s stated test conditions, not a controlled comparison between used cars.
Assuming all-wheel drive guarantees a better purchase
AWD can improve traction, but it also means more complex hardware to inspect. Tire matching, service history and the inspection report remain decisive.

Modifications may be well engineered, but they can complicate diagnosis, insurance and resale. Require documentation and have the specialist assess the calibration, installation quality and effect on other components.
Using online reliability rankings as a substitute for inspection
The cited guides and manufacturer materials do not provide a comparative failure-rate study. A general reputation cannot tell you whether the specific car in front of you has been serviced, overheated, crashed or driven hard.
