There is no single long-trip fuel-economy figure for every Mercedes-Benz E 220d. The clearest recent benchmark is ADAC’s June 2024 Ecotest of an E 220 d T-Modell AMG Line Premium 4MATIC with 9G-TRONIC. Its measured consumption is a useful reference for that estate, four-wheel-drive specification, but it is not a promise for every E 220d body, model year, tyre or route. An older Mercedes-Benz environmental certificate reports a much lower NEDC range for an earlier E 220d; that laboratory result uses a different test procedure and should not be treated as a modern highway expectation.
The published figures, and what they actually describe
Consumption figures only become meaningful when you identify the car and the measurement method. The following results come from different generations and test bases, so they are context, not interchangeable readings.

|---|---|---|
| 5.8 l/100 km overall | ADAC Ecotest, June 2024, Mercedes-Benz E 220 d T-Modell AMG Line Premium 4MATIC 9G-TRONIC | Independent real-world-style test benchmark for the specified estate and 4MATIC drivetrain. |
| 6.8 l/100 km highway portion | Same ADAC test and vehicle | Useful indication of that test route’s highway consumption, not a guaranteed result at every speed or in every weather condition. |
| 3.9–4.3 l/100 km | Mercedes-Benz historical E-Class environmental certificate, earlier E 220 d with 9G-TRONIC, NEDC; range varies with tyres | Historical manufacturer laboratory figure. It is not a current real-world long-trip measurement. |
See the complete ADAC E 220 d Ecotest report for the tested specification and date. The older range appears in Mercedes-Benz Group’s E-Class environmental certificate. No comparable, cross-generation average for owner-recorded long trips is established by these sources.

Why your E 220d can use more or less fuel
Generation, body style and drivetrain
An E 220d saloon and an E 220 d T-Modell estate do not present the same aerodynamic area or mass. A rear-wheel-drive car is also a different configuration from a 4MATIC car. Model-year changes can alter the engine calibration, transmission software, standard equipment and wheel options. Because the ADAC result is specifically for an estate with 4MATIC, applying it directly to a saloon or a two-wheel-drive car would overstate its scope.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
- Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
- 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
- Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
- Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.
When recording or comparing a trip, write down the model generation or registration year, body style and drivetrain. Without those details, two apparently conflicting consumption reports may both be accurate for their respective cars.
Tyres and rolling resistance
Mercedes-Benz identifies low-rolling-resistance tyres as one element of the E-Class efficiency package, and its historical certificate shows that the NEDC range changed with tyre fitment. Tyre construction, width, wheel size and pressure all influence rolling resistance, but the available sources do not assign a litre-per-100-kilometre saving to any particular tyre or pressure adjustment.
Use the tyre size and load/speed rating approved for your exact vehicle. Check pressures against the car’s label or handbook, particularly before a fully loaded trip, and use a reliable pressure gauge. That is sound preparation; it is not evidence of a guaranteed fuel reduction.

Optional equipment, mass and aerodynamics
Mercedes-Benz explains that WLTP assessments take account of optional equipment when it changes aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance or vehicle mass. A panoramic roof, larger wheels, exterior accessories, a roof box and heavy luggage can therefore change the energy required to maintain speed. The sources establish the direction of these influences but do not quantify their separate effect on an E 220d journey.

- PROCESS LEVEL ACCURACY: Each ETENWOLF’s digital tire pressure gauge is calibrated manually to ANSI B40.7 Grade 2A(plus-minus 1 PSI).Presta valve adapter not included, if used for bicycles, it must be purchased separately
- ACCURACY IN EXTREME PRESSURE RANGE: Whether tire pressure is below 12 PSI or above 140 PSI, ETENWOLF’s digital tire gauge is accurate as well
- ACCURACY IN EXTREME WEATHER: Built-in AI chip with thermal compensation inside, ETENWOLF’s tire gauge works normally even in extreme cold or hot weather(-4°F-130°F/-20°C-54°C)
- PRESSURE RANGE 3-200 PSI : ETENWOLF’s digital tire pressure gauge can measure pressure of all types of vehicles
- REPLACEABLE AAA BATTERIES: Batteries are easy to replace and helps to extend the tire pressure gauge’s life span, with LED light to illuminate dark areas for easy tire pressure reading
For a meaningful comparison, note unusual equipment and payload. A lightly loaded car on standard wheels is not an equivalent test of a car carrying passengers, luggage and roof-mounted equipment.
Powertrain and energy management
The E-Class certificate describes an “intelligent package of measures” involving the powertrain and energy management, as well as aerodynamics, weight, tyres and driver information. These are system-level design features rather than a promise that every trip will reach a particular number. They help explain why two E 220d generations can have different official figures even when their engine badges look similar.
Driving style and the route itself
Mercedes-Benz includes driver information intended to encourage economical driving among its efficiency measures. Your result also reflects the route: sustained motorway running, stop-start traffic, gradients, wind, rain, temperature, speed and payload can all change the work the car must do. Neither the ADAC listing nor the Mercedes-Benz documents isolates a specific percentage or litre effect for one of those variables on an E 220d, so treat them as reasons for variation rather than as a calculator with fixed penalties.

Mercedes-Benz describes WLTP as a more realistic comparative benchmark than the former NEDC procedure. WLTP uses a more dynamic prescribed profile and considers relevant optional equipment, but it remains a standardized test. It is designed to compare vehicles under controlled conditions, not to predict the exact consumption of your next 500-mile drive.

NEDC is the older procedure behind the 3.9–4.3 l/100 km historical E 220d range. Its result cannot be converted reliably into the ADAC highway figure, and averaging the two would create a number with no technical meaning. If a listing gives a WLTP value, label it as WLTP; if it gives an older NEDC value, retain that qualification.

How to estimate fuel for your own long trip
1. Identify the exact car
- Record the model year or generation, saloon or T-Modell estate body, rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC, transmission and wheel/tyre specification.
- Note passengers, luggage, a roof box or trailer, and any other equipment that changes mass or aerodynamics.
- Record whether your comparison number is from a manufacturer test, an independent test or your own fuel receipts.
2. Establish a repeatable baseline
Reset the trip computer at the start of a representative journey, but do not rely on one display reading as laboratory data. For a more robust owner figure, record litres added and kilometres driven over several refuelling intervals. Keep the same units and calculate consumption as:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstalllitres used ÷ kilometres driven × 100 = l/100 km
Refuelling to the same point reduces variation from different shut-off behaviour. Keep notes on route type, weather, load and average traffic so that an unusually easy or difficult trip is not mistaken for the car’s permanent baseline.

3. Use the ADAC result as a conditional reference
If your car matches the tested estate 4MATIC specification reasonably closely, the ADAC overall and highway values provide a defensible starting point. If your car is a different body, generation or drivetrain, use the test only as context and give greater weight to your own repeated records. Do not present the ADAC number as a universal E 220d promise.
4. Convert a consumption figure into fuel needed
The arithmetic is straightforward once you have a qualified estimate: distance × l/100 km ÷ 100 = litres required. For example, applying the ADAC highway test value of 6.8 l/100 km to a hypothetical 600 km journey gives 40.8 litres. That is a calculation based on the test number, not a prediction that your own trip will use exactly 40.8 litres; actual conditions and vehicle specification may differ.
A practical pre-trip checklist
- Tyres: Check cold pressures against the vehicle label, inspect for damage and confirm that the fitted sizes and ratings are approved for the car.
- Load: Remove unnecessary items and distribute luggage securely. Account for passengers, a roof box or other accessories when comparing with an unloaded test.
- Trip computer: Reset the relevant trip and consumption displays, and record distance and conditions at departure.
- Route: Note the expected motorway, urban and hilly sections. A mixed route is not directly comparable with a steady highway run.
- Weather: Log strong wind, heavy rain, cold temperatures or unusual congestion alongside the fuel result rather than treating them as faults.
- Refuelling record: For the most reliable owner average, save litres and odometer readings across multiple fills instead of relying on one short trip.
This checklist improves the quality of your comparison; the available Mercedes-Benz evidence does not support promising a particular saving from any one item.

| Comparison question | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Which car? | Generation updates and body styles change mass and aerodynamics. | Model year/generation, saloon or estate, engine designation. |
| Which drivetrain? | 4MATIC and rear-wheel-drive versions are not the same configuration. | Drivetrain and transmission. |
| Which wheels and tyres? | Mercedes-Benz links the historical official range to tyre fitment and identifies rolling resistance as relevant. | Tyre size, wheel size, pressure and load rating. |
| How was it measured? | A prescribed laboratory cycle, an independent test and an owner’s fuel log answer different questions. | NEDC, WLTP, ADAC Ecotest or receipt-based calculation. |
| What were the conditions? | Route, load and weather can shift a real journey away from a test profile. | Distance, highway/urban mix, traffic, terrain, weather and payload when available. |
Only compare numbers after these fields are aligned. Otherwise, a lower historical NEDC value can look like proof that a newer car is inefficient, or a single owner’s downhill trip can look like a repeatable norm.
Best Value
- 【Accuracy】The digital tire pressure gauge has 4 different measurement units: PSI, KPA, BAR, KG/CM². It reads within 1% of the exact tire pressure, with a resolution of 0.1 PSI and the measuring range is 3-250 PSI (0.2-17.2 Bar; 20-1724 Kpa; 0.2-17.5 kg/cm^2)
- 【Durability】The tire inflator gauge is made of heavy-duty stainless steel and corrosion-resistant brass components, equipped with a sturdy rubber hose and a gear-type rubber dial, which is reliable and durable. The high-definition digital LCD display also has a light mode for use at night
- 【3-in-1】The tire pressure gauge includes inflation, deflation, and tire pressure checking functions. Connect it to your air compressor to inflate; press the built-in deflation valve to deflate the tire; press the power button to check tire pressure
- 【Compatibility】The inflation gun can be used with ½” and ¼” NPT air compressors to inflate tires. And it is very suitable for various vehicle tires, including trucks, cars, SUVs, RVs, motorcycles etc. Suitable as a gift for men and women
- 【Safety】Excessive tire pressure will cause blowouts, while insufficient tire pressure will cause excessive wear. A tire pressure gauge for cars can help you reduce the possibility of blowouts, explosions, and wear, improve your MPG, and save fuel costs
What the available evidence cannot tell you
The published material does not provide a controlled table showing how many litres per 100 km are added by driving at a particular speed, carrying a specified payload, using a particular tyre pressure, or travelling in a given temperature. It also does not establish a cross-generation owner average. Avoid precise claims such as “10% more at 75 mph” unless a source has actually measured that exact comparison.
Likewise, there is no named individual quotation attached to these figures. The useful official statement is the Mercedes-Benz certificate’s description of an “intelligent package of measures”; it is a description of the engineering approach, not a personal guarantee of consumption.
The clearest answer for a buyer or owner
Use the June 2024 ADAC result as a concrete reference for the tested E 220 d estate 4MATIC: it recorded 5.8 l/100 km overall and 6.8 l/100 km on the highway part of that test. Treat the 3.9–4.3 l/100 km NEDC range as a historical, tyre-dependent manufacturer laboratory result for an earlier E 220d, not as a target for a current long trip. For your own car, the most honest forecast comes from matching configuration and conditions, then averaging several properly recorded journeys.
