Mercedes-Benz E 220 d vs Audi A6 TDI: comfort, running costs and practicality compared

The E 220 d leads the cited UK economy and saloon-boot figures, while the Audi A6 TDI offers more outputs and quattro. Comfort and total ownership cost depend on the exact specification.

For a UK buyer choosing a new saloon, the Mercedes-Benz E 220 d is the more economical-looking specification on official figures and offers a larger published boot, while the Audi A6 TDI gives you a wider choice of power outputs and quattro all-wheel drive. That is not a universal victory for either car. The E 220 d figure is a UK, rear-drive mild-hybrid saloon specification; Audi quotes several A6 TDI versions with different outputs and drivetrains. Comfort depends heavily on suspension and wheel configuration, and the available evidence does not establish a definitive total-cost or reliability winner.

Scope: which cars are being compared?

This comparison uses the current UK Mercedes-Benz E 220 d Saloon as the Mercedes reference and Audi’s current A6 Saloon TDI range as the Audi reference. It is therefore aimed at someone shopping for a new car in the UK, not at a used-car buyer comparing older generations. Registration year, market, trim, wheel size, suspension and body style can all change the figures.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“Audi A6 TDI” is not one specification. Audi lists a 150 kW TDI with front-wheel drive, a 150 kW TDI with quattro, and a 220 kW quattro version in the current range. The Mercedes reference is much more specific: a 1,993 cc four-cylinder diesel with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, rear-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The fairest reading of the evidence is therefore conditional:

  • Choose the E 220 d if the UK saloon’s published fuel figure, rear-drive layout and 540-litre boot suit your priorities.
  • Choose an A6 TDI if you need a particular power level or quattro traction and are prepared to compare the exact Audi version rather than a generic “A6 TDI”.
  • Do not call either car cheaper to own without matching prices, tax, mileage, insurance, servicing and depreciation in the same country and registration year.

Powertrains and published specifications

The headline difference is that Mercedes combines a single diesel specification with mild-hybrid assistance, whereas Audi’s A6 TDI badge covers several outputs and drivetrains.

Measure Mercedes-Benz E 220 d Saloon (UK) Audi A6 Saloon TDI (current cited versions)
Engine and assistance 1,993 cc four-cylinder diesel with 145 kW (197 hp) combustion output plus 17 kW (23 hp) electric assist TDI versions listed at 150 kW or 220 kW; the cited range does not use one single output
Torque 440 Nm Not stated as one common figure for the range; confirm the exact Audi data sheet
Transmission 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic S tronic automatic on the cited Audi versions
Drive Rear-wheel drive 150 kW front-wheel drive, 150 kW quattro or 220 kW quattro configurations are listed
Official combined economy 58.9 mpg, WLTP (UK specification) 4.8–5.6 l/100 km for 150 kW front drive; 5.0–5.8 l/100 km for 150 kW quattro; 5.3–6.2 l/100 km for 220 kW quattro
Official CO₂ 126 g/km (UK specification) Varies by output, drivetrain and equipment; use the exact Audi configuration’s data
Published saloon boot 540 litres 452 litres for the specific German-market 220 kW quattro saloon technical sheet

The Mercedes economy number is a UK WLTP result. If you convert 58.9 UK mpg mathematically, it is approximately 4.8 l/100 km; that conversion is not an additional Mercedes test result. Audi’s ranges are already given in l/100 km and span several configurations, so comparing the bottom of Audi’s range with the Mercedes figure without identifying the drivetrain would be misleading.

What the mild-hybrid system changes

The E 220 d’s 17 kW electric machine assists the diesel engine rather than turning the car into a plug-in hybrid. It can support engine-off coasting, restarting and short periods of torque assistance, but the published 58.9 mpg remains a laboratory-cycle result. It does not guarantee that every owner will achieve that figure in traffic or on short journeys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What quattro changes on the A6

Quattro adds driven wheels and changes the vehicle’s weight, tyres and energy demand. Audi’s own figures show the effect: the 150 kW quattro is listed at 5.0–5.8 l/100 km versus 4.8–5.6 l/100 km for the front-drive 150 kW car, while the 220 kW quattro is listed at 5.3–6.2 l/100 km. If traction is not important to you, the front-drive A6 is the more relevant economy comparison; if it is important, accept that the official consumption range rises.

Comfort: what the evidence actually shows

Both cars target long-distance comfort, but a badge does not determine ride quality on its own. Spring type, wheel diameter, tyre sidewall, adaptive dampers, seat adjustment and load all matter. A steel-sprung E 220 d can feel very different from an E-Class fitted with optional adaptive suspension or smaller wheels.

Mercedes E 220 d ride and seats

Autocar’s road test described the E-Class as broadly comfortable and praised the seats as supportive, although firmly padded. The same review found a steel-sprung E 220 d clunky over rough roads at lower speeds, particularly up to about 35 mph, while its motorway ride was stronger. That is useful guidance for an urban commuter: do not assume that a large executive saloon will automatically smooth out every pothole.

The test also recorded 67 dBA at 70 mph. Autocar said this was 2 dBA more than an Audi A6 it had tested in 2022. The cars were not driven together, the A6 test was earlier, and the tyres, road surface and equipment were not a controlled common test. Treat the number as contextual road-test reporting, not proof that every current A6 is quieter than every E-Class.

How to compare comfort on a test drive

  1. Check the tyre size and suspension fitted to the exact car. A large wheel with a low-profile tyre can transmit more sharp impacts than a smaller wheel on the same model.
  2. Drive the route you actually use. Include broken urban surfaces, speed humps, a smooth motorway and a coarse section of dual carriageway.
  3. Drive slowly over patched tarmac as well as quickly over undulating roads. The E 220 d’s reported low-speed clunkiness may not appear at motorway speeds.
  4. Adjust the driver’s seat, steering wheel and lumbar support, then sit in the rear seat behind your normal driving position.
  5. Switch between available suspension modes, but do not assume an optional mode is fitted simply because the model name is the same.
  6. Notice tyre roar and wind noise at a stated speed. A subjective impression is more useful when you record the surface, speed and wheel specification.

For a family that spends most of its time on motorways, the E-Class’s reported motorway composure and supportive seats may be attractive. For a city user who encounters broken surfaces daily, the exact suspension and wheel package should decide the test-drive result rather than the Mercedes or Audi badge.

Fuel economy and running costs

What WLTP can and cannot tell you

Mercedes-Benz UK publishes 58.9 mpg combined and 126 g/km CO₂ for the E 220 d Saloon. Audi publishes the ranges shown above for its A6 TDI versions. WLTP is a standardized laboratory cycle, not a promise of an owner’s fuel bill. Audi specifically warns that equipment, accessories, tyres, weather, traffic and driving behaviour can affect consumption and emissions.

Those qualifications matter particularly here. A rear-drive E 220 d, a front-drive A6 and a heavier quattro A6 are not exposed to identical mechanical losses. Optional wheels and tyres can move a car between official bands. Cold starts, short trips, congestion, motorway speed and winter fuel can all push actual consumption away from the published result.

Build a fair fuel-cost calculation

To estimate your own annual fuel cost, use one unit and one route assumption for both cars:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down annual mileage, separating urban, rural and motorway driving if possible.
  2. Choose the exact Audi output and drivetrain. Do not use the 150 kW front-drive range for a quattro purchase.
  3. Use the official WLTP figure as a baseline, then create a conservative scenario for your route rather than presenting WLTP as a forecast.
  4. Multiply annual fuel use by the current local diesel price. Record the date and country because prices change.
  5. Run the calculation again with your observed consumption after several tanks. That owner data is more relevant than a brochure number for future budgeting.

Without a common route, matched equipment and observed data, the available evidence cannot identify a real-world mpg winner. The Mercedes has the stronger headline result on the cited UK page, but that is not the same as proving a lower annual fuel bill for every driver.

Tax and purchase-price context

The 126 g/km CO₂ figure is the published UK value for the E 220 d specification. Actual UK tax treatment depends on registration date, list price rules and the vehicle’s exact variant. An indexed Mercedes-Benz UK 2026 brochure result listed an E 220 d Urban Edition at a £58,300 recommended on-the-road price and a £440 road-fund-licence figure. Those are dated, trim-specific examples; verify the live price and tax treatment before using them in a purchase decision.

No directly matched current UK price for an equivalent Audi A6 TDI, and no complete like-for-like tax table, was established here. An A6’s output, quattro system and equipment can materially change its list price and emissions band, so using a base-model Audi price against a highly equipped E-Class would produce a false saving.

Costs that fuel economy does not cover

A proper ownership budget should include:

  • Purchase price, finance interest or the opportunity cost of cash.
  • Road tax and, where relevant, company-car taxation based on the registered variant.
  • Insurance for your postcode, age, mileage and security profile.
  • Scheduled servicing, consumables, tyres and brake wear.
  • Unscheduled repairs after the warranty period.
  • Depreciation or the difference between a guaranteed future value and the cash price.
  • Fuel based on your actual annual mileage and route.

The available evidence does not provide comparable current service-plan prices, insurance quotations or depreciation data for the two exact cars. It would therefore be inaccurate to declare a total-cost winner from the WLTP figures alone.

Practicality: boot space, passengers and body style

Saloon boot comparison

Mercedes-Benz UK lists 540 litres for the current E 220 d Saloon. Audi’s cited technical sheet lists 452 litres for a specific German-market A6 220 kW quattro Saloon. On those named specifications, the Mercedes has 88 litres more published luggage capacity.

That is a useful shopping clue, not proof that every E-Class has a more useful boot than every A6. The figures come from different markets and Audi configurations. A lower-output A6, a different trim or a different measurement convention could produce a different result. Check the exact local technical sheet and inspect the boot opening, floor height and rear-seat split in person.

Body style or variant Published capacity How to interpret it
E 220 d Saloon, UK 540 litres Current UK saloon specification
A6 220 kW quattro Saloon, Germany 452 litres Specific 2025 German technical sheet, not every A6 TDI
E 220 d Estate, Germany 615 litres Estate figure; do not compare directly with a saloon without flagging the body-style change
A6 Avant TDI matching figure Not stated A directly matching volume for the selected engine was not established

When an estate is the better answer

If you carry a pram, dog, bicycles or tall boxes, an estate’s square opening can matter more than a saloon’s nominal litres. Mercedes-Benz Germany lists 615 litres for the E 220 d Estate, but that is a German-market estate specification. The relevant Audi comparison is an A6 Avant with the same engine, drivetrain and market; do not substitute a saloon figure or assume the two estates have identical capacities.

Passenger practicality

Neither cited source provides a complete, standardized rear-legroom or cabin-width measurement for both cars. Use a physical check for rear passengers: sit behind the tallest regular occupant, test the center rear position, and check access with child seats installed. Seat comfort and cushion angle can matter more on long trips than a small difference in published exterior dimensions.

Performance and traction choices

The Mercedes specification’s 145 kW diesel output, 17 kW electric assistance and 440 Nm are aimed at effortless everyday acceleration rather than a performance variant. Rear-wheel drive preserves the traditional longitudinal layout and may appeal to drivers who prefer its balance, but it offers no additional driven axle when roads are slippery.

Audi gives you a broader performance ladder. The 150 kW front-drive and quattro cars target different priorities, while the 220 kW quattro version is substantially more powerful. Audi’s German technical sheet gives that 220 kW quattro saloon a 0–100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds. That figure belongs specifically to that variant and should not be attributed to every A6 TDI.

Quattro can be valuable on steep, wet or snowy roads and when towing, but it adds mechanical complexity, mass and official fuel consumption. If your driving is mostly dry motorway and urban commuting, front-wheel drive may be sufficient; if traction is a recurring problem, compare the quattro premium with the benefit you will actually use.

Servicing, warranty and ownership planning

The cited Audi technical sheet for the 220 kW quattro saloon states a service interval of 30,000 km or two years, whichever comes first. That interval is specific to the German-market technical sheet and is not a promise that every A6 TDI in the UK follows the same schedule.

No equivalent current E 220 d service interval or matched service-price schedule is established in the available evidence. Before signing, request the exact maintenance plan for the vehicle identification number, including oil specification, inspection timing, brake-fluid changes, transmission servicing and any diesel-emissions-system requirements.

Questions to ask a dealer

  • Which country and model year does this service schedule apply to?
  • What is included in each scheduled service, and what is charged separately?
  • Are tyre replacement and wheel alignment included in any maintenance package?
  • What warranty covers the diesel engine, hybrid-assist components and emissions hardware?
  • Does the quoted finance payment assume a final balloon or guaranteed future value?
  • What exact CO₂, tax and list-price figures will appear on the registration documents?

Compare written plans, not verbal estimates. A longer interval can reduce scheduled visits, but the cost and scope of each visit still determine the annual budget.

Which car suits which driver?

Your priority More logical starting point Reason and qualification
Lowest published UK saloon consumption E 220 d Mercedes lists 58.9 mpg WLTP; actual use will vary and the Audi figures depend on version.
Choice of output and all-wheel drive A6 TDI Audi lists 150 kW front drive, 150 kW quattro and 220 kW quattro versions.
Largest cited saloon boot E 220 d 540 litres versus 452 litres for the named German-market 220 kW quattro A6 saloon.
Fastest cited diesel option A6 220 kW quattro 5.2 seconds from 0–100 km/h on the German technical sheet.
Broken urban roads Test both exact cars Autocar found a steel-sprung E 220 d clunky at low speed; wheel and suspension specification is decisive.
Lowest total ownership cost Undecided until priced Fuel, tax, servicing, insurance and depreciation are not matched in the available data.

A buyer’s step-by-step comparison checklist

  1. Fix the scope. Confirm UK registration, new or used purchase, saloon or estate and target model year.
  2. Name the Audi precisely. Record 150 kW front drive, 150 kW quattro or 220 kW quattro, plus trim and wheel size.
  3. Obtain written specifications. Save the exact WLTP economy, CO₂, list price, tax and standard equipment for both cars.
  4. Check the load case. Take your largest suitcase, child seat or dog crate to the dealer and test the opening, floor and seat-fold arrangement.
  5. Drive the same route. Use identical passengers, tyre pressures and weather where practical; include rough streets and motorway cruising.
  6. Price ownership. Ask for insurance, servicing, tyres, finance and warranty costs using the same annual mileage.
  7. Calculate a conservative fuel case. Use local diesel pricing and a realistic consumption assumption rather than treating WLTP as guaranteed.
  8. Review the contract. Check excess mileage, final payment, maintenance exclusions and the vehicle’s exact registration CO₂ figure.

Verdict

The current UK E 220 d Saloon is the more straightforward efficiency-and-practicality choice on paper: Mercedes quotes 58.9 mpg WLTP, 126 g/km CO₂ and a 540-litre boot, with rear-wheel drive and mild-hybrid assistance. The Audi A6 TDI is the more configurable choice, because its 150 kW front-drive, 150 kW quattro and 220 kW quattro versions let you prioritize economy, traction or performance. The strongest A6 specification cited here reaches 220 kW and 0–100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, but its official economy range is higher and its 452-litre boot figure comes from a specific German-market saloon.

For comfort, drive the exact wheel-and-suspension combinations you intend to buy. For running costs, obtain matched UK quotes before deciding: the available figures do not support a universal total-cost winner.
