The company did not disclose how many employees were affected or how many remained.
What Mercedes-Benz confirmed
In a statement to GeekWire, an unnamed Mercedes-Benz representative said: “In the normal course of business, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America (MBRDNA) made the difficult decision to reduce a limited number of roles in our Seattle office.” The statement called the cuts “necessary for the continued success of our company.” GeekWire reported the confirmation on October 16, 2024.
The company did not provide a layoff total. GeekWire reported that the Seattle office website listed 81 employees at the time, but that was not a count of affected workers or a verified post-cut headcount.
What the Seattle office worked on
Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America announced the Seattle hub in November 2017. The company said the office would focus on cloud computing to expand and enhance connected-car functionality, with a planned size of up to 150 people. GeekWire’s account of the opening also described a plan to employ up to 150 software engineers.

Seattle was part of a broader Mercedes-Benz effort to develop vehicle software and digital services. In June 2021, the company described global R&D technology hubs, including Seattle, and its aim to connect the future MB.OS operating system with vehicles, cloud services and the Internet of Things. That announcement provides strategic context, but does not establish a link between the software strategy and the 2024 role reductions.
Is the Seattle office closed?
The available information does not establish that the office later closed. Mercedes-Benz Group’s North American R&D locations page, last updated in June 2026, lists five locations and omits Seattle. That omission alone does not confirm closure. The company’s locations page does not state the Seattle office’s status.

Washington’s Employment Security Department maintains a WARN database that can include an employer, location, effective date, affected-worker count and notice. The available database information does not confirm whether a relevant Mercedes-Benz notice exists, so it cannot establish the number of Seattle employees affected.
