A girl aged over five was hit by a car near Canning Highway and Rome Road in Melville on Sunday, 15 September 2024, and taken to Perth Children’s Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to a PerthNow report published the next day. The circumstances of the collision were not confirmed in that report.

What happened near Canning Highway and Rome Road?

PerthNow reported that police and paramedics attended the collision at about 2:30pm on Sunday, 15 September 2024. St John WA was cited as saying the girl had serious but not life-threatening injuries, including grazes. She was admitted to Perth Children’s Hospital shortly after 3pm. PerthNow’s report, published 16 September 2024, also said police temporarily closed the westbound part of Canning Highway while emergency services were at the scene.

Was the cause of the collision confirmed?

No. PerthNow said the circumstances had not been confirmed. Its report said the child was believed to have walked onto the road, but that was an unconfirmed account—not an established finding about how the collision happened or who was at fault. The sources reviewed do not establish the driver’s identity, vehicle speed, whether charges were laid, the outcome of any investigation, or the child’s later condition.

What later records say about the intersection

Later public information addresses safety around the broader Canning Highway, Rome Road and Hislop Road intersection, but it does not establish the cause of the September 2024 collision.

Crash figures and safety review

A Western Australian Parliament written answer dated 12 August 2025 records one serious crash and no fatal crashes at or near the intersection in 2024. It does not identify the serious crash, so the figure cannot be treated as confirmation that it was the collision involving the child.

The same answer says a signalised mid-block pedestrian crossing on Canning Highway was installed in 2022. The City of Melville asked Main Roads in January 2025 to reconsider signals at the Canning Highway/Rome Road/Hislop Road junction. A road-safety audit was completed in May 2025, and as of the parliamentary answer its findings and other options were still under consideration. These are distinct measures and locations: the installed crossing is mid-block, while junction signals were being reconsidered. The answer does not establish that any proposed junction changes have since been installed.

Community concern

In its 2024 Risky Roads results, RAC WA ranked the intersection second among metropolitan intersections, based on a survey that received more than 18,000 nominations from West Australians. This is a community survey ranking, not a crash count or an engineering measurement of risk.

In a PerthNow report dated 20 February 2025, Dr Ron Sammut of Dentist Melville described his staff’s response: “Our staff avoid the intersection completely, preferring to drive around the block rather than cross over it, and prefer to use Marmion Street where possible.” This is an attributed account of their experience, not an official safety assessment.
