Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC AWD Explained: What the Badge Means, How It Works, and Its Limits

Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC is a family of AWD systems, not one universal design. Here is how its variable, permanent, AMG, and electric versions differ—and why tires and snow-chain instructions are model-specific.

Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC is not one single all-wheel-drive mechanism. It is a family of systems whose hardware and torque strategy vary by model, engine or electric drivetrain, market, and model year. One 4MATIC vehicle may run mostly in front-wheel drive during steady cruising and engage the rear axle when needed; another may continuously drive both axles; an AMG model may use a rear-biased performance system; and an electric model may independently control motors on the front and rear axles.

That distinction matters. The 4MATIC badge can tell you that the vehicle has an all-wheel-drive system, but it does not by itself tell you the torque split, whether the system uses a mechanical transfer case or clutch, how it behaves in corners, where snow chains can be installed, or whether it is suitable for serious off-road use.

What Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC does

In broad terms, 4MATIC gives the vehicle access to more than two driven contact patches. When the road is wet, snowy, muddy, gravelly, or uneven, the system can distribute drive force between the axles and manage wheelspin so that the available grip is used more effectively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A generalized 4MATIC intervention may involve wheel-speed sensors, steering-angle and acceleration data, differentials, a transfer case or clutch-based coupling, and the stability-control system. The control software evaluates the driving situation and adjusts the drivetrain accordingly. The exact process is different across Mercedes-Benz platforms, so this should not be read as a description of every 4MATIC vehicle.

The main benefit is during acceleration. If the front or rear tires begin to lose grip, sending some drive force to the other axle can help the vehicle move away from a slippery surface with less wheelspin. The system can also improve stability and confidence when accelerating out of a corner, depending on its calibration.

It does not create traction from nothing. The tires must still have usable contact with the road. If all four tires are on glare ice, the road is flooded and the vehicle hydroplanes, or the driver enters a corner too quickly, 4MATIC cannot repeal the laws of vehicle dynamics.

Variable versus permanent 4MATIC

Mercedes-Benz broadly distinguishes between variable 4MATIC and permanent 4MATIC. They are not interchangeable descriptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Type How it generally works What the label does not tell you
Variable 4MATIC Can operate primarily, or in some conditions entirely, through the front axle during steady driving, then send more torque to the rear when traction or handling demands it. It does not mean the system is always driving all four wheels or that every model uses the same front/rear ratio.
Permanent 4MATIC Continuously drives both axles through a fixed torque split. It does not mean the vehicle has a universal 50:50 split, identical differentials, or identical behavior to another permanent 4MATIC model.

Variable 4MATIC: efficiency when AWD is not needed

On applicable Mercedes-Benz vehicles, variable 4MATIC can use front-wheel drive during steady highway cruising when the front tires have sufficient grip. If conditions change, the system can engage the rear axle proactively or reactively and move toward a more balanced distribution, including a 50:50 front/rear split in the situations Mercedes-Benz describes.

This approach is especially relevant to compact Mercedes-Benz models with transverse-mounted powertrains. It can reduce the need to keep the rear drivetrain engaged when all-wheel-drive capability is not currently required. However, the actual operating range depends on the specific vehicle and software calibration.

Variable AWD can offer an efficiency and packaging advantage compared with a permanently driven system, but that does not establish a guaranteed fuel-economy result. Added drivetrain hardware can still bring weight, friction, packaging, and service considerations. Compare the exact two-wheel-drive and 4MATIC versions using the relevant EPA or market-homologation figures rather than assuming that every variable system will use less fuel than every permanent one.

Permanent 4MATIC: both axles continuously driven

Permanent 4MATIC continuously sends drive force to both axles through a fixed torque split. Mercedes-Benz explanatory material has identified vehicles such as the E-Class, S-Class, GLE, GLE Coupe, and GLS among applications using permanent 4MATIC, but availability and hardware can change by model year and market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A permanent system can provide consistent drivetrain behavior and predictable traction characteristics. The trade-off is that continuously driven hardware generally adds mechanical complexity, weight, and potential maintenance requirements compared with a two-wheel-drive configuration. The precise hardware and service schedule belong to the individual vehicle, not to the 4MATIC name alone.

What 4-ETS does—and what it does not do

4-ETS is Mercedes-Benz’s four-wheel Electronic Traction System. When the system detects wheelspin, it can rapidly pulse the brake at the slipping wheel. That braking intervention helps the differential and drivetrain direct usable drive force toward a wheel with better grip.

4-ETS is therefore a brake-based traction-assistance strategy. It is not the same as a mechanical locking differential, and the presence of 4-ETS does not mean that a Mercedes has locking differentials on either axle.

On a loose or slippery surface, the system may allow the vehicle to keep moving when one wheel would otherwise spin uselessly. It can be helpful on snow, wet pavement, gravel, sand, or mud, within the limits of the tires and vehicle clearance. Because it uses brake intervention, sustained wheelspin or extreme conditions can also place heat and load into the braking and drivetrain systems. Follow the vehicle’s operating instructions rather than treating the system as an unlimited off-road feature.

AMG Performance 4MATIC is a different performance philosophy

AMG versions use additional hardware and calibration intended to preserve traction while giving the car a more agile, rear-biased character. They should not be treated as ordinary 4MATIC systems with a more powerful engine.

AMG Performance 4MATIC

Mercedes-AMG describes its variable Performance 4MATIC system as using a multi-disc clutch with AMG-specific electrohydraulic control integrated into the rear-axle differential. This allows the system to vary how much drive force reaches the front and rear axles according to the driving situation.

The objective is not simply maximum traction in a straight line. The calibration can also support sharper turn-in, stronger corner-exit behavior, and a more responsive handling balance. The exact modes and behavior vary by AMG model.

AMG Performance 4MATIC+

AMG Performance 4MATIC+ is more flexible still. In applicable AMG systems, Mercedes-Benz says it continuously calculates the ideal torque distribution and can transition from all-wheel drive to 100 percent rear-wheel drive. That rear-drive capability supports a more rear-biased driving character, but it should not be generalized to every AMG wearing a 4MATIC badge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMG TORQUE CONTROL

Some AMG applications add AMG TORQUE CONTROL, which can distribute power separately between the two rear wheels using individually controlled multi-disc clutches. Mercedes-Benz technical material for the AMG GLA 45 4MATIC+ identifies inputs including vehicle speed, acceleration, steering angle, differences in wheel speed, selected gear, and accelerator position.

This is torque vectoring at the rear axle, not merely a front/rear AWD split. It can help influence the vehicle’s yaw response and cornering behavior. Whether a particular AMG model has this feature must be confirmed from that model’s technical specifications.

Electric 4MATIC uses a different architecture

Electric Mercedes-Benz vehicles can implement 4MATIC with independently controlled electric drive units on the front and rear axles. That is fundamentally different from assuming that every gasoline-powered 4MATIC vehicle uses the same mechanical transfer case, driveshaft, or center differential.

In Mercedes-Benz’s explanation of the electric EQE 43 and EQE 53 AMG, front/rear torque is continuously adjusted according to the driving situation, with torque demand checked 160 times per second. In related EQS technical material, Mercedes-Benz describes Torque Shift, which distributes torque between the axles while selecting the more efficient electric drive unit; that material says torque demand can be checked and adjusted 10,000 times per minute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures apply to the cited electric-drive applications. They should not be presented as a universal response rate for every electric or gasoline 4MATIC model. Electric 4MATIC hardware, software, drive modes, and energy-management strategy vary by vehicle.

Which Mercedes models have 4MATIC?

Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. vehicle listings show 4MATIC availability across several body styles and powertrains, including examples from the CLA, E-Class, GLC, GLE, GLS, EQB, EQE, and EQS families, along with AMG variants. This is a market- and model-year-specific snapshot, not a permanent list of every vehicle sold everywhere.

Even within one model family, 4MATIC may differ according to:

  • Model year and market
  • Gasoline, diesel, hybrid, or battery-electric powertrain
  • Transverse or longitudinal engine layout
  • Standard Mercedes-Benz drivetrain or AMG performance version
  • Body style, engine output, transmission, and available drive modes

To identify the system in a particular vehicle, check the current Mercedes-Benz configurator for the relevant market, the window sticker, the VIN build sheet, and the vehicle’s owner’s documentation. The badge alone cannot establish whether the car has a mechanical center differential, a clutch-based coupling, a front-biased variable system, rear-axle torque vectoring, or two independently controlled electric drive units.

What 4MATIC can improve—and what it cannot

Where 4MATIC helps

  • Acceleration on compromised surfaces: Drive force can be shared across more tires when one axle begins to lose grip.
  • Reduced wheelspin: Torque distribution and 4-ETS brake intervention can help prevent one slipping wheel from wasting available power.
  • Corner-exit stability: Certain systems can make power application more predictable when accelerating out of a bend.
  • Performance handling: AMG systems can add rear-biased torque distribution and, on some models, individually controlled rear-wheel torque vectoring.
  • Fast electric responses: Electric 4MATIC systems can independently control axle drive units and adjust torque rapidly.

Where 4MATIC does not help enough

  • Stopping distance: AWD primarily helps transmit engine or motor torque while accelerating. It does not automatically shorten braking distances. Braking depends largely on tire-road friction, tire condition, speed, road surface, and the brakes.
  • Hydroplaning: Four driven wheels do not prevent tires from riding on water. Speed, tread condition, and water depth remain critical.
  • Excessive speed: AWD cannot make a corner safe at a speed the tires and suspension cannot support.
  • Bad or mismatched tires: A sophisticated drivetrain cannot compensate for worn tread, incorrect pressure, unsuitable tires, or an improperly matched set.
  • Very low grip: If the tires have almost no contact or friction with the surface, the control system has little to work with.
  • Ground clearance: A 4MATIC sedan or crossover is not automatically an off-road vehicle. Clearance, suspension travel, tires, underbody protection, drive modes, and recovery equipment may matter more than the AWD badge.
  • Towing and recovery: Towing limits, trailer procedures, recovery points, and permissible driving modes are model-specific.

4MATIC tires matter more than the badge

The most important ownership rule is simple: 4MATIC still depends on the tires. Mercedes-Benz owner manuals emphasize tire condition, tread, pressure, and the entire tire contact surface. Replacement requirements can vary with the model, wheel size, drivetrain, and approved fitment.

Use the tire placard and the specific owner’s manual to confirm the approved tire size, load rating, speed rating, wheel dimensions, and any restrictions on combinations. Do not rely on a generic internet rule that claims all Mercedes 4MATIC vehicles require the same tire arrangement.

If you are shopping for cold-weather equipment, choose winter tires matched to your Mercedes and approved for its exact wheel and tire package. 4MATIC can help the vehicle accelerate on snow, but it does not make winter tires optional when winter conditions demand them. A tire retailer or Mercedes-Benz service professional should verify the fitment rather than treating all tires of the same nominal diameter as interchangeable.

Snow chains: never assume front or rear

Snow-chain placement is one of the clearest examples of why model-specific research is essential. There is no universal chain position for every Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cited Mercedes-Benz manuals give different instructions:

  • The 2024 E-Class Wagon manual says to install chains only on the rear wheels of 4MATIC vehicles.
  • The 2023 CLA Coupe manual says that 4MATIC vehicles should use chains only on the front wheels.
  • The 2026 CLA manual warns against front-wheel installation and specifies rear-wheel installation for that application.

Those instructions are not a contradiction in the concept of 4MATIC. They show that wheel-well clearance, suspension design, tire size, drivetrain packaging, and model-year changes can alter the approved installation position.

Before buying or installing chains:

  1. Identify the exact model year, body style, drivetrain, and tire size.
  2. Read the snow-chain section of that vehicle’s owner’s manual.
  3. Confirm that the specific wheel and tire combination permits chains at all.
  4. Follow the stated axle position; do not substitute front for rear or rear for front based on general AWD advice.
  5. Use Mercedes-approved or equivalent-quality chains appropriate for the available clearance.
  6. After installation, check clearance and follow the manual’s speed restriction.

In the cited applications, the manuals specify a maximum speed of 30 mph, or 50 km/h, with chains installed. Treat that as an example of the kind of restriction the manual may impose, not as permission to use the same limit without checking your own vehicle’s documentation.

If the manual, tire placard, or fitment information is unclear, consult a Mercedes-Benz authorized service center before purchasing equipment or driving on chains. That is especially important when the vehicle has optional wheels, staggered tire sizes, low-profile tires, or an AMG package.

How 4MATIC developed

Mercedes-Benz introduced the passenger-car 4MATIC concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1985. The first production W124 4MATIC sedans, including the 260 E 4MATIC and 300 E 4MATIC, began deliveries in spring 1987.

The original W124 system combined complex control electronics with additional front-wheel-drive hardware, transfer gearing, and a differential. Its packaging and mechanical arrangement were substantially different from the variable compact-car systems, AMG performance systems, SUVs, and electric implementations that followed.

The history is useful because it reinforces the central point: 4MATIC has always been a system family rather than one frozen design. A description that is accurate for a W124 cannot automatically be applied to an EQE, GLA 45 AMG, GLE, or current CLA.

  • Does the model use 4-ETS, a clutch-based coupling, AMG rear-axle torque control, or independent electric axle motors?
  • Are the tires square or staggered, and what replacement combinations are approved?
  • Are snow chains permitted with the installed wheel and tire package, and on which axle?
  • Does the vehicle’s towing, ground clearance, and drive-mode equipment match the intended use?
  • What are the official fuel-economy or energy-consumption figures for this exact powertrain?

For an existing vehicle, keep the owner’s manual and tire placard as the final authority for tire, wheel, chain, towing, and operating instructions. For a used vehicle, a VIN build sheet or original window sticker can help confirm the exact specification, since a model family may have offered several different 4MATIC configurations.

Technical distinctions and examples in this article are based on Mercedes-Benz USA 4MATIC explanations, Mercedes-Benz AMG and electric-drive technical material, Mercedes-Benz vehicle listings, the Mercedes-Benz historical archive, and the cited model-specific owner manuals. Availability and instructions can change by market and model year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC vehicle drive all four wheels all the time?

No. Some 4MATIC systems are variable and can operate primarily through the front axle during steady driving, while permanent systems continuously drive both axles. AMG and electric versions use additional architectures.

Is Mercedes 4MATIC always a 50:50 front/rear system?

No. A variable system may move toward a 50:50 split when traction requires it, but the 4MATIC badge does not establish a universal torque split. The exact strategy depends on the model, powertrain, market, and model year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does 4MATIC shorten braking distances?

Not automatically. 4MATIC mainly helps transmit power during acceleration. Braking distance is dominated by tire grip, tire condition, speed, brakes, and the road surface.

Can I install snow chains on any 4MATIC Mercedes?

No. Some wheel and tire combinations do not permit chains, and the approved axle can differ by model and model year. The cited manuals include rear-only and front-only examples, so check the exact owner’s manual before buying or installing chains.

Does 4MATIC make a Mercedes an off-road vehicle?

No. Ground clearance, tires, suspension, underbody protection, drive modes, recovery equipment, and the vehicle’s operating limits are all important. An AWD badge alone does not establish off-road capability.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC is a name shared by several AWD designs, not a guarantee of one mechanical layout or torque split. It can improve acceleration traction and, in AMG and electric applications, support highly sophisticated handling and torque control. It cannot replace suitable tires, safe speed, or model-specific knowledge. Verify the exact vehicle’s system, tire fitment, and snow-chain instructions in its owner documentation before making assumptions.
