Buy the best-maintained W126, not the engine badge. In U.S. specification, the 300SEL uses a 177-hp M103 inline-six and was sold from 1988 through 1991. The 420SEL uses a 201-hp M116 V8 and arrived earlier, for 1986, continuing through 1991. The 420SEL delivers 40 lb-ft more torque and feels more effortless when passing, but period commentary notes that late 300SELs felt nearly as quick as U.S.-specification 420SELs. On a 30-to-40-year-old car, rust, service records and deferred repairs matter more than the original 24-hp difference.

420SEL: the M116 V8
The 420SEL’s M116 V8 produces 201 hp and 228 lb-ft in the same U.S. data. The extra 40 lb-ft arrives where drivers use it most, making freeway merges, grades and two-lane passing less work. The V8 also supplies the sound and low-speed character many buyers expect from an S-Class of this era.
V8 ownership is not automatically difficult, but there are more cylinders, ignition parts and fuel-system components to service. Access can be tighter, and deferred cooling, timing-chain or fuel-injection work can become expensive. A 420SEL is the right choice when its maintenance history proves those systems have been cared for, not simply because its badge suggests a higher specification.
U.S. production timeline and equipment context
The 420SEL joined the U.S. range for 1986, while the 300SEL arrived for 1988. Both ended when W126 sales concluded in 1991. The Mercedes-Benz Club of America chronology also records ABS becoming standard in 1985 and airbags with automatic seatbelt tensioners appearing for 1986. Verify the actual equipment on an individual car rather than assuming every market or build date matches the U.S. timeline.

How they drive in real use
City driving and commuting
The 300SEL’s inline-six can feel particularly smooth at urban speeds, and its lower output may encourage a calmer driving style. For a commuter who values quiet operation and does not need rapid acceleration, it supplies adequate performance. The 420SEL is equally civil but responds with less throttle input; that can be useful in traffic, although it may come with a greater fuel and service burden over time.
Highway cruising and passing
The 420SEL’s torque advantage is easiest to notice above suburban speeds. It holds momentum on grades and needs fewer downshifts for a quick pass. The 300SEL remains capable of highway travel when properly tuned, but a buyer who regularly carries passengers or drives mountainous routes may prefer the V8’s reserve. Because late 300SELs were reported to feel nearly as quick as U.S.-spec 420s, drive both cars before deciding that the difference is large enough to justify buying a poorer example.
Ride, steering and refinement
Neither engine changes the basic W126 experience: a long-wheelbase cabin, substantial sound insulation and a suspension designed for composed cruising. On an old car, worn front-end bushings, steering joints or dampers can overwhelm any engine-character distinction. A tight 300SEL will feel more satisfying than a 420SEL that wanders, clunks or shudders under braking.
Where age creates the real ownership risk
Hagerty describes W126 powertrains as generally durable beyond 200,000 miles when maintained, but that is an observation about properly serviced cars, not a mileage guarantee. The age-related systems below deserve more attention than the odometer alone.

Front suspension and steering
Front-end and steering bushings typically wear earlier than the core engines. Look for wandering, uneven tire wear, clunks over small bumps, steering play and a car that needs constant correction on a straight road. Replacing several linked components at once can cost more than a seller’s asking-price discount, so obtain a written estimate before purchase.
Cooling and timing-chain service
Overheating damage is avoidable but expensive. Inspect the radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat, fan and belts, and confirm that the temperature remains stable in traffic and on a road test. On the 420SEL, ask for documentation of timing-chain-related maintenance and cooling work; on either model, unexplained temperature movement is a reason to stop the inspection, not a minor quirk.
Fuel injection and ignition
Both engines use period mechanical fuel-injection systems that depend on correct pressures, sensors, wiring and vacuum signals. Hard starting, stalling, surging, hesitation or poor hot restart behavior can indicate faults that are difficult to diagnose by replacing random parts. A specialist who can test the system is more useful than a generic code scan on a car of this age.
Automatic transmission
Well-maintained W126 powertrains can outlast their transmissions, according to Hagerty’s ownership guidance. During a cold and fully warmed road test, shifts should be predictable, with no flare, harsh engagement, delayed reverse or slipping under load. Ask when fluid and filter service was performed and whether any transmission work was documented.

Vacuum-operated locks
The central locking system uses vacuum hardware and can fail intermittently. Test every door, the trunk and the fuel flap repeatedly, including after the engine has been switched off. A lock that works only sometimes may indicate a leak or a failing actuator rather than a harmless age-related annoyance.
Climate control
Climate-control diagnosis can be costly. Confirm that the blower operates at its different settings, the system changes temperature, air reaches the selected vents and the compressor engages when required. Test heating and cooling on the same visit; a seller demonstrating only one function has not proved the system is healthy.
Electrical equipment and corrosion
Operate windows, seats, mirrors, gauges, warning lamps, interior lighting, sunroof, wipers and exterior lamps. Inspect jacking points, floor sections, wheel arches, door bottoms, trunk wells, windshield surrounds and the underside for rust or previous repairs. Structural corrosion is a stronger reason to walk away than faded trim or a tired headliner.

A step-by-step inspection before you buy
- Review the identity and records. Match the vehicle identification number on the body and paperwork. Confirm the U.S. model year, engine, mileage history and ownership trail. Prioritize invoices that identify dates and parts over a folder containing only generic claims.
- Inspect the car cold. Arrange the appointment so the engine has not been pre-warmed. A cold start reveals battery strength, starter speed, fuel-delivery problems, smoke, rattles and unstable idle. Watch the oil-pressure gauge and warning lamps as the engine starts.
- Check fluids and leaks. Look for oil, coolant, power-steering and transmission-fluid leaks before driving. Inspect fluid condition and levels, but do not treat clean-looking fluid as proof of recent service without receipts.
- Evaluate cooling under load. Let the car reach operating temperature, run it in traffic and drive it at highway speed. Confirm a stable gauge, functioning fan operation and no coolant smell or loss.
- Test the transmission. Select every gear, reverse and park with the engine cold and hot. During acceleration and lift-off, note shift timing, flare, thumps and slipping. Ask for a specialist diagnosis if behavior is abnormal.
- Drive the suspension and steering. On smooth and broken pavement, listen for knocks and feel for looseness. Brake from several speeds to check for pulling, pulsation and vibration. Verify that the car tracks straight and the steering returns naturally.
- Test climate control and locks repeatedly. Exercise every temperature, fan and vent setting, then cycle all vacuum-operated locks several times. Intermittent operation is a fault to price, not a pass.
- Check electrical accessories and safety systems. Confirm the ABS and airbag warning lamps illuminate during the bulb check and then go out as expected. Test seats, windows, mirrors, lamps, wipers, gauges and the sunroof.
- Inspect for rust and accident repair. Use a lift when possible. Compare panel gaps, paint texture and underbody seams, and examine structural areas rather than focusing only on visible shine.
- Get an independent specialist report. Have a Mercedes technician document compression or running concerns, fuel-injection readings, suspension wear, brake condition, rust and imminent maintenance. Use that report to decide whether to buy, renegotiate or walk away.
Which model fits your priorities?
Choose the 300SEL when
- You want the inline-six’s smooth, lighter-feeling response and adequate everyday performance.
- Your driving is mainly commuting or relaxed cruising rather than frequent high-speed passing.
- You prefer the possibility of lower fuel use and lower mechanical overhead, while accepting that age-related repairs still apply.
- The available 300SEL has substantially better records, less rust or a healthier suspension than the 420SEL you are considering.

Compare candidates by total acquisition cost: purchase price plus immediate tires, brakes, suspension, cooling, fuel-system, climate-control and electrical repairs. A cheaper car with several nonworking systems can exceed the cost of a more expensive, documented example before it becomes reliable. Originality matters to some collectors, but a professionally repaired rust-free body and complete maintenance file are more useful for regular driving than cosmetic originality alone.

A model-specific Mercedes-Benz W126 workshop or service manual is a practical reference because W126 manual indexes include both 300SEL and 420SEL coverage.
