For a specification-led daily-driver decision, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet is the stronger choice if you want more published power, standard all-wheel drive, quicker maker-claimed acceleration and integrated cold-weather open-top equipment. The BMW M440i Convertible is the value-oriented alternative: it starts substantially lower, lets you choose rear-wheel drive or xDrive, and has a faster maker-claimed roof cycle. Those conclusions come from US manufacturer specifications, not a same-day road test. Ride quality, roof-up noise, seat comfort, visibility, controls, rear-seat access and luggage fit still require driving both cars.
The current US information identifies these as 2027 model-year vehicles, while some Mercedes details come from a 2025 reference guide and the BMW technical data does not clearly identify its model year. Treat every price, fuel-economy figure and equipment claim in that context.

Quick verdict: which convertible fits your daily use?
Choose the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet when your priorities are maximum published performance, all-weather traction without selecting an option, and standard equipment intended to make top-down driving more comfortable in cool or windy conditions.
Choose the BMW M440i Convertible when the lower entry price matters most, you prefer a rear-drive sports-car setup, or you want the flexibility to add xDrive rather than receive all-wheel drive by default. The rear-drive BMW is not a like-for-like traction comparison with the Mercedes; the M440i xDrive is the closer match.

Neither manufacturer’s figures establish which car rides better, seals out more noise, uses less fuel in real traffic or costs less to insure and maintain. A buyer should treat this as a specification-based recommendation and schedule back-to-back drives before ordering.
Price: BMW starts lower, but compare equipped cars
| Vehicle | US manufacturer starting MSRP | Price context |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 BMW M440i Convertible, rear-wheel drive | $75,200 | BMW USA starting price; excludes options, dealer pricing, taxes and fees. |
| 2027 BMW M440i xDrive Convertible | $77,200 | BMW USA starting price; the xDrive surcharge is $2,000 relative to the rear-drive version before other equipment and charges. |
| 2027 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet | $85,700 | Mercedes-Benz USA starting price; excludes options, dealer pricing, taxes and fees. |
On published starting prices, the rear-drive BMW begins $10,500 below the CLE 53, while the xDrive BMW begins $8,500 below it. Those are manufacturer starting figures, not out-the-door quotes. Paint, wheels, driver-assistance packages, upholstery, destination charges, registration, taxes and dealer adjustments can change the amount you actually pay. Compare build sheets with equivalent equipment before treating the gap as a final value judgment.
Mercedes’ January 2025 guide listed the CLE 53 at $82,600 and separately identified a $1,150 destination and delivery charge. That older figure should not be mixed into a current 2027 price comparison; it is useful only as historical context.
Power and acceleration: the CLE has the paper advantage
| Specification | Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet | BMW M440i Convertible |
|---|---|---|
| Published output | 443 hp; 413 lb-ft | 386 hp; 398 lb-ft |
| Maker-stated 0–60 mph | 4.2 seconds | 5.0 seconds rear-wheel drive; 4.6 seconds xDrive |
| Engine and transmission details available in the cited material | AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six with hybrid assist and an electric auxiliary compressor; AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G | Technical output and acceleration figures are listed; the reviewed BMW row does not provide equivalent engine-and-transmission detail in the same context. |
Mercedes lists 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque for the 2027 CLE 53 Cabriolet. Its 2025 quick-reference material describes an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six with hybrid assistance, an electric auxiliary compressor and a nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT transmission.
BMW lists 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft for the M440i Convertible. BMW’s estimated 0–60-mph times are 5.0 seconds for rear-wheel drive and 4.6 seconds for xDrive. BMW labels those acceleration results preliminary and notes that specification, conditions, procedures and driving style affect the result.

The published numbers therefore favor the Mercedes for both output and acceleration. They are not a controlled comparison: the cars may have different tires, fuel loads, weather, surfaces and test methods. Use the figures to understand the manufacturers’ positioning, not to predict an exact result in your own commute.
Drivetrain and traction: decide whether you want choice or standard AWD
Mercedes: AMG Performance 4MATIC+ is standard
The CLE 53 Cabriolet comes with Mercedes-AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive in the cited US specifications. That gives the buyer a single, traction-focused configuration rather than a rear-drive alternative. All-wheel drive can be useful on wet roads, snow-covered streets and steep driveways, but it does not replace winter-capable tires, sensible speeds or appropriate following distances.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBMW: rear-wheel drive or xDrive
BMW sells the M440i Convertible in rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive. Rear drive provides the traditional front-engine sports-car layout and the lowest starting price. xDrive adds all-weather traction and improves BMW’s maker-claimed acceleration, but it also costs more and weighs more according to BMW’s technical data.
For a fair traction comparison, put the CLE 53 against the M440i xDrive. Comparing the Mercedes’ standard AWD with the least expensive rear-drive BMW answers a different question: maximum traction versus lowest entry price and a rear-drive character.
Roof operation and open-top comfort
| Feature | Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet | BMW M440i Convertible |
|---|---|---|
| Roof type and operation claim | Acoustic multilayer soft top; opens or closes in as little as 20 seconds at speeds up to 37 mph. | Soft top; operates in approximately 10 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph. |
| Wind-management equipment | AIRCAP system described as a windshield deflector plus a rear wind deflector. | BMW says a convertible wind deflector is standard on all 4 Series Convertibles. |
| Cold-weather equipment | AIRSCARF neck-level warm-air delivery for front occupants; the 2025 guide lists AIRCAP and AIRSCARF as standard. | The cited material confirms the standard wind deflector but does not establish an equivalent neck-heating system. |
Mercedes’ published roof claim is “as little as” 20 seconds, with operation permitted at up to 37 mph. BMW quotes approximately 10 seconds and up to 30 mph. The BMW is quicker on the manufacturers’ stated cycle time, while the Mercedes allows roof operation at a higher vehicle speed. Actual operation can depend on conditions, battery state, temperature and whether the car is stopped or moving within the permitted limit.

For regular top-down commuting, AIRCAP and AIRSCARF are meaningful design differences. AIRCAP is intended to reduce cabin turbulence, while AIRSCARF directs warm air around the front occupants’ necks. BMW’s standard wind deflector addresses airflow, but the cited BMW information does not document a matching neck-warming feature. Equipment descriptions do not prove that one car will be quieter or more comfortable for every driver; wind direction, seating position and personal tolerance matter.

Mercedes cargo information
Mercedes cites 9.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the CLE 53 roof closed and describes 60:40 split-folding rear-seat backrests. The split-fold function can help carry long, narrow items, but it does not turn either convertible into a large-load vehicle. Confirm the opening shape and usable floor length with the objects you actually carry.
BMW cargo information
BMW’s current FAQ gives 13.6 cubic feet with the roof up and 10.6 cubic feet with the roof down for 430i Convertible models. Those measurements are for the 430i, not the M440i, and should not be reassigned to the M car. The reviewed material does not establish a verified, exact-trim M440i cargo figure that can be compared directly with the Mercedes’ 9.6-cubic-foot claim.
That missing like-for-like number is important if the convertible will carry a stroller, golf equipment, airport luggage or weekly shopping. Bring the largest item you routinely transport to both dealers and test it with the roof in the position you normally use. Do not assume the 430i values apply to the M440i.
Dimensions and everyday maneuvering
BMW’s technical page lists the M440i Convertible at 188 inches long and 72.9 inches wide excluding mirrors. It lists curb weights of 4,242 pounds for rear-wheel drive and 4,354 pounds for xDrive. The reviewed Mercedes material does not provide a directly comparable current CLE 53 dimension table in the same source context.

- Buyer's Guide: The seat guard for car seat between seat & console measures 15.75*2.7*1.53", suitable for gaps of 1.43-1.53" in width, please double-check carefully the distance between your seat and the center console before placing an order
- Storage and Filling in One: Differ from traditional single-function gap fillers, gap filler for car incorporates storage function, offers you the convenience of storing phones and various other items, so that you can access them at any time while driving
- Avoid Items Slipping: With the bumps and vibrations of the car, phones, keys may fall into the seat crevices, which is difficult to pick up, and distracts the driver's attention. Car gap seat filler fills gaps seamlessly to create an effective barrier
- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
Because the figures are not aligned, the available specifications cannot establish which car is easier to park or more convenient in a narrow garage. Check mirror-to-mirror width, turning feel, front-corner visibility, camera quality and door clearance during your own visit. Convertibles can also have different sightlines with the roof folded, so evaluate both roof positions.
Fuel economy: do not declare a same-year winner from these figures
| Vehicle and source context | Published figures | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-AMG CLE 53, 2025 quick-reference guide | 19 city / 26 highway / 22 combined mpg | EPA-labeled figures in the 2025 Mercedes reference material. |
| BMW M440i, BMW technical page | 27 city / 33 highway mpg rear-wheel drive; 26 city / 32 highway mpg xDrive | The reviewed technical passage does not label the figures as EPA estimates and does not make the model-year context explicit. |
Mercedes’ 2025 guide reports 19/26/22 mpg city/highway/combined under EPA labeling. BMW’s technical page lists 27/33 mpg for rear drive and 26/32 for xDrive, but the reviewed passage does not provide the same EPA-label context or a clearly matching model year. It would be misleading to call BMW the definitive fuel-economy winner from these rows.
Before purchase, compare the window stickers or current EPA listings for the exact model year, drivetrain and equipment. Convertible fuel economy can also vary with wheel-and-tire choices, temperature, traffic and roof use, so official ratings are a baseline rather than a guarantee of your commute’s consumption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you about daily driving
Ride comfort and body control
Neither manufacturer’s listed horsepower, roof hardware or curb weight predicts whether the suspension will feel settled on broken pavement. A daily-driver evaluation should include patched urban streets, expansion joints, speed humps and a smooth highway. Drive the cars back-to-back on the same route, with the seat and steering wheel adjusted for your normal position.
Roof-up noise
A multilayer soft top and an acoustic design suggest attention to refinement, but the cited material contains no independent cabin-noise measurement. Test both cars at the speed you normally cruise, then repeat with the roof folded. Listen for wind rush, tire roar, buffeting and conversation clarity rather than relying on the roof description.

Visibility, controls and rear-seat access
Check sightlines over each shoulder, the size and placement of the mirrors, camera resolution, screen glare and the number of menu steps needed for climate and roof controls. Sit in the rear seats with the front seats set for the primary driver. Measure whether children, adults or a child seat can be accommodated and whether the front seat can be moved without difficulty.
Weather and seasonal use
The Mercedes’ standard AIRCAP and AIRSCARF equipment is a strong specification advantage for cool-weather top-down use. BMW’s standard wind deflector still provides an integrated airflow solution. Neither specification proves winter usability in your climate; examine heated-seat operation, tire availability, ground clearance on your usual roads and how quickly the cabin reaches a comfortable temperature.
Ownership cost and reliability: no supported winner
The available official information does not establish comparable insurance premiums, financing costs, maintenance schedules, repair bills, depreciation, resale values or reliability for these exact vehicles in a particular location. A higher purchase price does not automatically mean higher or lower long-term cost, and the BMW’s lower MSRP should not be treated as proof that it is cheaper to own.
Recommended Free Tools
Obtain insurance quotes using the exact vehicle identification details, ask each dealer for scheduled-maintenance pricing, and compare warranty terms and roadside assistance in your market. Request an itemized out-the-door quote that separates destination, documentation, taxes, registration and dealer-installed accessories. Those steps answer ownership questions that the published specification sheets cannot.
How to choose: a priority-by-priority decision guide
Choose the CLE 53 if these priorities dominate
- You want the higher published horsepower and torque figures.
- You prefer a single, standard all-wheel-drive configuration rather than choosing between rear drive and AWD.
- You value the Mercedes’ maker-claimed 4.2-second 0–60-mph time, understanding that it is not a controlled comparison test.
- You expect frequent cool-weather top-down driving and want standard AIRCAP and AIRSCARF equipment.
- You are willing to pay the higher starting MSRP for that specification package.
Choose the M440i if these priorities dominate
- You want the lower starting price, especially in rear-wheel-drive form.
- You prefer the option of a traditional rear-drive layout.
- You want to add xDrive for a lower-priced AWD alternative to the Mercedes, subject to equipment and dealer pricing.
- You value BMW’s approximately 10-second roof-operation claim, while accepting its lower 30-mph operating limit.
- You are prepared to verify the exact M440i cargo capacity and EPA labeling rather than relying on 430i or unmatched data.
A practical test-drive checklist
- Price the same equipment. Build both cars with comparable paint, wheels, driver-assistance features, audio, seating materials and destination charges. Save the itemized quotes.
- Drive a rough-road loop. Use the same streets and note impact harshness, suspension motions, steering effort and brake-pedal feel.
- Test both roof positions. Operate each roof within its permitted speed range, then evaluate buffeting, temperature and conversation quality at urban and highway speeds.
- Check the controls. Set climate, seat heating, navigation, drive modes and roof functions without coaching from the salesperson. Count how many screen steps each task takes.
- Assess visibility and access. Park, reverse, change lanes, enter a tight space and climb into the rear seats. Repeat with the roof up and down.
- Bring your luggage. Use a tape measure or the actual suitcase, stroller or equipment you carry. Test loading with the roof both up and down.
- Verify current labels. Read the window sticker for the exact model year and drivetrain, including EPA fuel-economy ratings, standard equipment and destination charges.
- Get ownership quotes. Ask insurers and dealers for location-specific premiums, service pricing and warranty details before committing.
Bottom line
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet is the better specification-led daily driver for buyers who prioritize published performance, standard AWD and integrated wind-and-cold-weather equipment. The BMW M440i Convertible is the smarter starting point for buyers who prioritize price or want to choose rear-wheel drive, with xDrive available when traction matters. Because ride, noise, ergonomics, rear-seat usability, cargo fit and real ownership costs are not settled by these manufacturer figures, the final decision should follow an instrumented comparison of your own commute and a complete, like-equipped dealer quote.
