At a glance: the key differences
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG C 43 and BMW M340i occupy the same compact-performance-sedan niche, but they pursue speed differently. Mercedes uses a highly boosted 2.0-liter four-cylinder with hybrid assistance and standard all-wheel drive. BMW uses a larger 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, offering rear-wheel drive or optional xDrive.

Powertrains: four-cylinder urgency versus inline-six refinement
Mercedes-AMG C 43: maximum output from a small engine
Mercedes-AMG quotes 416 hp and 369 lb-ft from a handcrafted 2.0-liter inline-four. The engine combines hybrid assist with an electrically assisted exhaust-gas turbocharger, a system Mercedes identifies in its official specifications. The electric assistance is intended to build boost quickly and reduce the response delay associated with a conventional turbocharger.

This is not a plug-in hybrid. The system cannot be treated as an electric-only driving setup or compared directly with a plug-in model’s battery capacity and charging capability. Its role is to support the combustion engine, smooth response and help provide the C 43’s high peak horsepower number.
The four-cylinder’s appeal is immediacy and AMG theater. It delivers a strong surge when the transmission keeps the engine in its power band, and the standard AMG Performance 4MATIC system gives the car a predictable launch in wet or cold conditions. The trade-off is that a small engine working this hard can sound and feel busier than a larger six-cylinder at highway speeds.
BMW M340i: the B58 inline-six advantage
The M340i uses BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assistance. BMW says its belt-driven starter-generator can contribute up to 11 hp of boost to the TwinPower Turbo engine. That assistance is also not a plug-in-hybrid system; it supports the engine during acceleration and helps the stop-start and energy-management functions.

BMW quotes 386 hp and 398 lb-ft. Although the BMW gives up 30 peak horsepower to the Mercedes, it produces 29 lb-ft more torque and does so with the smooth, linear character associated with a six-cylinder engine. The extra displacement means relaxed highway passing requires less drama, while the engine’s sound and response remain a major part of the M340i’s appeal.
The eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic is paired with both drivetrain configurations. Rear-wheel drive preserves the traditional sports-sedan balance and costs less; xDrive adds all-weather traction and produces BMW’s quickest quoted acceleration.
Which engine suits your driving?
- Pick the C 43’s four-cylinder if you want the AMG powertrain identity, an aggressive response and the highest advertised horsepower figure.
- Pick the M340i’s six-cylinder if you value smoothness, effortless torque, a richer engine note and relaxed long-distance cruising.
- Do not compare horsepower alone. The BMW’s greater torque and larger displacement affect everyday passing and refinement, while the Mercedes’ hybrid turbo strategy affects response and peak output.
Acceleration and real-world performance
What the official numbers say
Mercedes-Benz lists 4.3 seconds from 0 to 60 mph for the 2026 C 43. BMW Group lists 4.4 seconds for a rear-drive M340i and 4.1 seconds for an M340i with xDrive. That gives the all-wheel-drive BMW a quoted advantage of 0.2 second over the Mercedes, while the rear-drive BMW is 0.1 second slower.

Car and Driver recorded 3.9 seconds for an earlier C 43 configuration. That result does not replace the current Mercedes specification: tires, launch technique, surface, test temperature, fuel, drivetrain and model year can all change an acceleration time. Use the published figures to understand the cars’ positions, not to predict an exact result from every dealer test drive.
Why the tenths matter less than the drivetrain
Both sedans are already quick enough for rapid highway merges and confident passing. In daily driving, traction and power delivery are more noticeable than a 0.1- or 0.2-second difference. The C 43 includes all-wheel drive, so its launch behavior is consistent without selecting an option. The M340i buyer must decide whether the lower price and rear-drive balance are worth giving up some poor-weather traction, or add xDrive for the 4.1-second specification and extra grip.
Remember that all-wheel drive does not shorten braking distances on dry pavement, and it cannot overcome unsuitable tires. If winter traction is a priority, budget for a proper seasonal tire setup rather than relying on drivetrain hardware alone.
Handling, ride and daily comfort
Mercedes-AMG C 43: grip-first tuning
Car and Driver describes the C 43 as having plentiful cornering grip and sharp handling. That setup gives the Mercedes confidence on a winding road and a planted feel when accelerating out of a corner. The same review criticizes the firm ride, the aggressive stop-start behavior and the nine-speed transmission’s responses. Those are meaningful daily-use concerns: a car that feels exciting on a smooth road can become tiring over broken pavement or in heavy traffic.
The AMG calibration favors an overtly sporty character. Before buying, drive the car over the roughest streets on your normal commute, not only on a smooth dealership loop. Test the gentlest drive mode, inspect how quickly the stop-start system intervenes and check whether the transmission selects an appropriate gear when you lift off the throttle.

The M340i is the safer choice for buyers who want one sedan to cover commuting, long highway trips and enthusiastic driving without an aggressively focused setup. The C 43 is better suited to someone who actively wants AMG firmness and sharper visual and dynamic drama.
Controls and transmission behavior to evaluate
- Drive both cars in their most relaxed mode and in their sportiest mode; note how much the steering, throttle and dampers change.
- Use manual shifting on a back road, then return to automatic mode in traffic. This reveals whether the transmission’s logic suits your habits.
- Try a full stop, a rolling acceleration and a highway downshift. Stop-start and gear-selection behavior can be more important than peak output during ordinary use.
- Check the turning effort, pedal spacing and visibility before judging a car from specifications alone.
Traction and drivetrain choice
When the C 43’s standard 4MATIC matters
Every C 43 uses AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive. That simplifies the buying decision and gives the Mercedes a clear advantage for drivers who regularly encounter rain, snow or steep, slippery roads. It also supports repeatable launches when the surface is inconsistent.
Standard all-wheel drive does add hardware and weight, and it removes the rear-drive option for buyers who prefer traditional sports-sedan balance. If you live in a mild climate and drive mostly on dry roads, you may not use the C 43’s traction advantage often.
When the M340i’s two choices are better
The M340i can be ordered with rear-wheel drive or xDrive. Rear drive is the lower-cost configuration and the purist’s choice for balanced handling and throttle-adjustable cornering. xDrive is the practical choice for frequent winter weather and carries BMW’s quickest quoted 0–60 time.
Compare like with like when shopping: a rear-drive M340i’s 4.4-second specification should not be placed beside the xDrive model’s 4.1 seconds without identifying the drivetrain. Likewise, compare the final transaction prices after adding xDrive and any equipment you consider essential.
Fuel economy and ownership costs
Cars.com lists 29 mpg combined for the M340i and 22 mpg combined for the C 43 in its current comparison. That seven-mpg difference makes the BMW the efficiency choice on paper. Your result will vary with traffic, temperature, tire pressure, driving mode, wheel and tire package, and how often you use the engines’ performance.

At 15,000 miles per year, every seven mpg of combined-rating difference represents a substantial fuel-use gap. Calculate your own annual miles and local fuel price before deciding whether the C 43’s extra horsepower and standard all-wheel drive justify the added consumption. EPA ratings are comparison tools, not a promise of an individual driver’s results.

Price and equipment
Mercedes-Benz USA lists a $64,150 MSRP for the 2026 C 43. Cars.com lists a $61,700 starting MSRP for the BMW M340i in its current comparison, putting the BMW $2,450 lower before options, destination charges, taxes and dealer fees. BMW’s xDrive version, larger wheels, driver-assistance packages, upgraded audio and other options can narrow or reverse that gap. Mercedes options can do the same.
| Budget question | What the available figures support |
|---|---|
| Lowest starting price | BMW M340i, by $2,450 in Cars.com’s current comparison |
| Standard all-wheel drive | Mercedes-AMG C 43 |
| Potentially higher option-adjusted price | Not established; build both cars with equivalent equipment |
| Fuel-use advantage | BMW M340i, 29 mpg combined versus 22 mpg for the C 43 in Cars.com’s comparison |
Request itemized buyer’s orders from dealers. A base-price comparison can be misleading when one car includes equipment that is optional on the other, or when destination and market adjustments differ.
Warranty and unavailable long-term cost evidence
Cars.com entries for both vehicles list a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. The cited material does not establish a comparable long-term reliability ranking, maintenance-cost total or repair-frequency advantage for either sedan. Do not assume the BMW’s inline-six or the Mercedes’ four-cylinder will cost less to maintain without checking the current service schedules, prepaid plans and local labor rates.
Ask each dealer for scheduled-maintenance intervals, brake and tire pricing, warranty exclusions, roadside-assistance terms and the cost of the service items that recur after the basic warranty ends. Those written estimates are more useful to your budget than an unsupported reliability stereotype.
Cabin, technology and practicality
C 43 interior and equipment
The C 43 presents a modern, luxury-oriented cabin with AMG visual details. Car and Driver lists an 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto; optional Burmester audio is also listed. Mercedes-Benz specifies five seats and an 11.6-cubic-foot trunk.

The large portrait-oriented display dominates the dashboard. Confirm that you can reach climate and audio functions without excessive menu navigation, and check how clearly the screen remains visible in direct sunlight. If premium audio matters, verify that the specific vehicle has the optional Burmester system rather than assuming every C 43 includes it.
M340i interior and technology
The M340i also seats five, according to Cars.com. The supplied comparison does not state a directly comparable current BMW cargo figure, so there is no evidence here to declare a trunk winner. Measure the luggage you actually carry, including a stroller, golf bags or work equipment, at both dealerships.
Equipment levels vary by model year and package. Compare the actual window stickers for driver assistance, adaptive suspension, smartphone integration, heated seats, parking cameras and audio hardware rather than relying on the model name alone.

Which sedan fits each type of buyer?
Choose the BMW M340i when balance is the priority
- You want the smoothness and sound of a 3.0-liter inline-six.
- You value 398 lb-ft of torque and relaxed highway passing over the highest horsepower number.
- You want a lower starting MSRP and the possibility of rear-wheel drive.
- You drive enough miles for the 29-mpg combined rating to matter.
- You prefer a sport sedan that BMW says is tuned for both sportiness and comfort.
- You want xDrive available, but do not want to pay for all-wheel drive if you do not need it.
Choose the Mercedes-AMG C 43 when AMG character is the priority
- You require standard all-wheel drive and do not want to configure it as an option.
- You prefer the AMG design language and a more overtly luxurious cabin presentation.
- You place a high value on the 416-hp headline figure and rapid hybrid-assisted turbo response.
- You enjoy firm, grip-focused handling and accept a busier ride.
- You are comfortable with the higher starting MSRP and the lower quoted fuel economy.
Consider the BMW xDrive M340i specifically when weather is the deciding factor
The xDrive M340i combines BMW’s six-cylinder character with all-wheel traction and the quickest BMW acceleration figure cited here, 4.1 seconds to 60 mph. It is the most direct alternative to the C 43 for a buyer who wants both a refined engine and confident foul-weather launches. Compare its actual configured price with the Mercedes rather than assuming the $2,450 base-price advantage remains.
How to test-drive and price both cars fairly
- Build equivalent specifications. Select the drivetrain, wheels, adaptive suspension, driver-assistance features, audio system and other equipment you would genuinely purchase on each car.
- Obtain written out-the-door quotes. Separate MSRP, destination, documentation fees, taxes, registration, dealer add-ons and financing charges.
- Drive the same route. Include rough pavement, stop-and-go traffic, a highway merge, a tight turn and a safe stretch for moderate acceleration.
- Evaluate comfort before performance. Spend at least 20 minutes in normal modes, then repeat the route in sport settings.
- Check the details. Test rear-seat access, trunk loading, phone pairing, camera visibility, seat adjustment and climate controls.
- Estimate annual running costs. Use your mileage and fuel price with the 22- versus 29-mpg comparison, then add insurance, tires, brakes and scheduled service quotes.
- Recheck model-year and drivetrain labels. Confirm whether the vehicle is a 2026 C 43, a 2025 or 2026 M340i, rear-drive or xDrive, because the published performance figures differ by configuration.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing by horsepower alone: the C 43 leads in peak horsepower, but the M340i has more torque and a larger, smoother engine.
- Comparing acceleration figures without drivetrain labels: BMW quotes different times for rear-drive and xDrive cars.
- Assuming mild hybrid means plug-in capability: both systems assist their gasoline engines; neither figure establishes electric-only range or charging capability.
- Ignoring ride quality: the C 43’s firm AMG setup may be tiring on your roads even if its grip is impressive.
- Using the base MSRP as the final price: options, xDrive, destination and dealer fees can change the ranking.
- Declaring a cargo winner without data: the cited material provides the C 43’s 11.6-cubic-foot trunk but no directly comparable current BMW figure.
- Assuming reliability or maintenance superiority: the available material confirms the basic warranty but does not establish long-term cost or reliability differences.
Verdict
The BMW M340i is the better all-around recommendation for most buyers. Its inline-six delivers more torque and a smoother character, its starting price is lower in the current comparison, its quoted combined fuel economy is substantially better, and you can choose rear-wheel drive or xDrive. The xDrive model is also the quickest BMW configuration cited.
The Mercedes-AMG C 43 is the more specialized choice. It gives you standard all-wheel drive, 416 hp, distinctive AMG presentation and a luxury-focused cabin. Buy it when those qualities outweigh the firm ride, lower fuel-economy rating and higher starting price. If you are undecided after a properly matched test drive, the M340i’s broader range of drivetrain and daily-use strengths makes it the safer purchase.
