Mercedes-Benz used that space to package the engine, transmission, axles and other systems low and ahead of the cabin, while reserving a strong, separate occupant cell above it.
That arrangement let a very short car provide unusually tall seating, a flexible load area and a planned frontal-crash escape path for the powertrain. It also created room for battery-electric and fuel-cell development. The concept was genuinely innovative, but its tall body exposed handling limits that became public after the 1997 moose-test rollover and prompted major safety changes.

What the W168 sandwich floor actually was
In a conventional small hatchback, the floor is comparatively shallow: the engine sits in a front bay, the fuel tank is usually placed toward the rear, and the passenger compartment occupies most of the remaining length. Mercedes-Benz took a different route for the W168. Its body used a cavity between the lower floor panel and the passenger compartment, reinforced by longitudinal and transverse structural members.

The “sandwich” description refers to the layers: an underside structure, the intervening mechanical and energy-management space, and the passenger cell above. It is a body-and-packaging architecture, not a separate chassis bolted under an ordinary hatchback body.
Why make a short car tall?
More usable cabin length inside a small footprint
The W168 was designed to solve a difficult compact-car equation: reduce exterior length without sacrificing useful passenger and cargo space. Mercedes-Benz historical material gives the standard car an overall length of 3,575 millimetres. Occupants sat relatively high, which created a more upright seating position and made entry and exit easier than in a low-slung small car.
Because the mechanical hardware was moved into the sandwich zone, the cabin could use more of the car’s height and length. A low sill and a flat load floor also made it easier to place bulky items. This was practical efficiency rather than simply adding interior volume: the structure, suspension, drivetrain and crash strategy were designed together.

Unusually flexible seating
Mercedes-Benz records 72 seating arrangements for the W168. The rear seats could slide or be removed, and the front-passenger seat was optionally removable. Those functions allowed the owner to choose between rear legroom, passenger capacity and cargo length without changing the car’s external dimensions.

The tall body was therefore tied to a specific use case. A buyer received a small car that could be configured like a miniature people carrier, with a high seating position and a load floor that was easier to reach. The trade-off was a shape taller than many conventional hatchbacks of the period, with consequences for handling that became important later.
How the floor was intended to manage a frontal crash
Separating the powertrain from the occupant cell
Mercedes-Benz’s engineering explanation centers on occupant-cell separation. In a severe frontal impact, the angled engine-and-transmission assembly was designed to slide beneath the passenger compartment rather than intrude directly into it. The lower sandwich structure provided a planned path for that movement while the upper cell remained the protected space for occupants.
This is a design intention, not a promise that every crash produces the same result. Real-world outcomes depend on impact angle, speed, the object struck, restraint use and many other variables. Mercedes-Benz presented the architecture as providing passive protection approaching the standard associated with its larger E-Class, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent crash-test rating.
What occupied the lower zone
The cavity also gave engineers a defined location for systems that would otherwise compete for cabin or luggage space:

- Energy storage and exhaust: the battery, fuel tank and exhaust system were integrated into the lower structure.
- Structural members: longitudinal and transverse members formed the load-bearing framework around the cavity.
By putting these items into a protected, organized volume, Mercedes-Benz could tune the body around a predictable mechanical package instead of treating the cabin and the engine bay as unrelated spaces.
Packaging figures and what they mean
| Item | W168 figure or feature | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard overall length | 3,575 mm | Mercedes-Benz historical material, 2022 |
| Long-wheelbase change | 170 mm more wheelbase | Long version introduced in 2001; Mercedes-Benz historical material, 2022 |
| Vehicle weight | Approximately 1,000 kg | Approximate figure in Mercedes-Benz historical material, 2022; specification varies by version |
| Seating flexibility | 72 arrangements | Mercedes-Benz claim, including sliding or removable rear seats and an optional removable front-passenger seat |
| Production | Almost 1.1 million vehicles by May 2004 | Mercedes-Benz historical material, 2018; production at Rastatt ended in May 2004 |
The numbers show why the architecture mattered. A 3,575 mm car with a high roof and configurable seats could perform several roles normally spread across larger vehicles. The long-wheelbase derivative, launched in 2001, extended the wheelbase by 170 mm rather than abandoning the underlying floor concept.
Why the sandwich floor mattered for alternative powertrains
Mercedes-Benz did not design the lower cavity solely for one petrol or diesel engine. The company documented a 1997 battery-electric A-Class using a Zebra battery and later fuel-cell research vehicles, including NECAR 3. These projects used the protected lower volume to accommodate different propulsion hardware while preserving the basic passenger compartment.
That flexibility is an important part of the innovation. In a conventional small hatchback, replacing an engine and fuel system with a large battery or fuel-cell equipment can consume luggage space or require a new body. The W168’s deep floor created a place where energy-storage and propulsion components could be distributed without immediately raising the cabin floor or lengthening the nose.

The existence of prototypes does not mean that every W168 sold to the public was an electric or fuel-cell car. It shows that Mercedes-Benz treated the architecture as a platform for powertrain experimentation, not merely as a styling exercise.
How the W168 compared with a conventional small hatchback
| Engineering question | W168 sandwich-floor approach | Typical conventional small-hatchback approach |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior size versus cabin room | Uses a deep lower structure and tall cabin to create space in a short body. | Usually relies on a shallower floor and a more conventional engine bay, limiting how much cabin height and length can be reclaimed. |
| Seating and cargo access | High seating, low sill, flat load area and 72 recorded seating arrangements. | Often offers fewer ways to reconfigure seats and may have a less open load floor, depending on model. |
| Frontal crash-energy path | Powertrain was angled and arranged to slide beneath the occupant cell in a severe frontal impact, according to Mercedes-Benz. | Uses its own front-crumple and engine-bay strategy; the exact path depends on the vehicle’s structure. |
| Powertrain adaptability | Lower cavity could house or protect different propulsion components; Mercedes-Benz built battery-electric and fuel-cell research vehicles. | Alternative propulsion often requires greater re-engineering of the engine bay, floor or luggage area. |
| Handling development | Tall packaging produced a high-sided compact body and became part of the stability-control debate after 1997. | Lower or wider bodies can have different rollover and transient-handling characteristics; no universal result applies to every model. |
This comparison describes design priorities, not a blanket verdict that one layout is safer or better in every situation. The W168 gained interior versatility and powertrain room by accepting a taller form whose dynamic behavior required careful suspension, tire and electronic-control calibration.

The test and the rollover
On 21 October 1997, shortly after the new A-Class arrived, the Swedish magazine Teknikens Värld conducted an evasive-manoeuvre test commonly known as the “moose test.” Mercedes-Benz’s safety history describes the resulting rollover as a public shock. This was not a standardized regulatory crash test; it was a magazine test intended to represent a sudden lane-change or obstacle-avoidance manoeuvre.

The incident exposed the practical compromise of a tall compact car: packaging efficiency does not automatically guarantee stable behavior during an aggressive, rapid direction change. The test became central to the W168 story because it challenged confidence in the new model soon after launch.

Mercedes-Benz’s technical response
Mercedes-Benz revised the suspension and tires, added Brake Assist (BAS), and made the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) standard equipment. The company states that all 18,000 vehicles already delivered were upgraded free of charge. From February 1998, ESP was standard in the A-Class.
BAS helps apply braking force during an emergency stop when the system detects that the driver is attempting a panic brake application. ESP monitors vehicle motion and can brake individual wheels or reduce engine torque to help the car follow the driver’s steering direction. These systems do not repeal physics, but they can reduce the likelihood that a sudden manoeuvre develops into a loss of control.
The episode also helped accelerate wider acceptance of electronic stability control. The lesson was broader than one model: a novel body layout must be evaluated in real transient manoeuvres as well as in frontal-impact simulations and static packaging studies.

What the sandwich floor did not prove
The architecture is easy to oversell if its limits are ignored. The available Mercedes-Benz historical material does not establish an independent standardized crash-test score for the W168, a drag coefficient, a fuel-economy comparison or a lifecycle-cost statistic. Those figures should not be inferred from the floor design.
Nor does the sandwich floor mean the engine was simply “under the seats” in every configuration. Mercedes-Benz describes the engine, transmission and axles as arranged ahead of or below the passenger floor, with the exact installation dependent on the powertrain and body variant. The useful point is the protected lower packaging zone and its intended crash path, not a slogan that substitutes for the actual layout.
Why the W168 remains technically significant
The first A-Class combined four ideas that were rarely integrated so completely in a small hatchback: a short exterior, a tall and accessible cabin, a lower structure intended to manage frontal intrusion, and enough protected volume to explore electric and fuel-cell propulsion. Its 72 seating arrangements demonstrated how the floor could serve everyday practicality, while the later safety revisions demonstrated that packaging innovation had to be matched by suspension tuning and electronic control.
The W168 is therefore best understood as an engineering experiment that reached mass production. Its sandwich floor was innovative because it changed where the car’s mechanical, structural and energy-storage functions lived. The 1997 rollover did not erase that achievement; it showed that a successful architecture must be developed as a complete vehicle, including handling behavior, tires, braking assistance and stability control.
