For 2022, the FIA World Rally Championship replaced its top-level World Rally Cars with Rally1: cars pairing a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with a common 100 kW electric motor and 3.9 kWh battery. The FIA said the combined package could exceed 500 hp. Toyota, Hyundai and M-Sport Ford entered the new era with the GR Yaris Rally1, i20 N Rally1 and Puma Rally1. Their hybrid systems and fossil-free fuel were intended as steps toward more sustainable rallying, but official material does not quantify a lifecycle emissions saving or a reduction in the championship’s total emissions.
What changed when Rally1 arrived in 2022?
Rally1 replaced the World Rally Car category as the championship’s highest class in 2022. The FIA presented the change as a new hybrid-based era, with Hyundai, M-Sport Ford and Toyota involved under the new rules. The cars retained a turbocharged combustion engine but added a standardized plug-in hybrid system and a redesigned safety structure. The FIA’s 2022 season overview describes the powertrain and safety changes.
Engine, motor and output
The common framework paired a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with a 100 kW electric motor and 3.9 kWh battery. The FIA described combined performance as more than 500 hp. Toyota’s GR Yaris Rally1 specification uses a different unit: it says the hybrid unit could add 100 kW (134 hp) and 180 Nm, and lists combined maximum output above 500 PS and maximum torque above 500 Nm. Horsepower (hp) and metric horsepower (PS) are not interchangeable, so these figures should be read in the units and context in which each source gives them. Toyota Gazoo Racing’s 2022 technical page gives the model-specific figures.
When the electric system worked
The motor could provide an additional 100 kW and 180 Nm during acceleration, according to Toyota. The system also recovered energy under braking and could be recharged from an external power supply during service breaks. On designated sections near service parks, the cars had to run on electric power alone in HEV zones. The FIA described electric running on built-up road sections as a way to reduce local emissions and noted that electric operation in service areas could help crews respond to a high-voltage incident. These operating modes were part of the regulations; they do not mean the cars ran electrically throughout rallies. The FIA overview and Toyota’s technical description explain the system’s operation.

What did “more sustainable” mean?
The FIA said Rally1 cars ran on “100 per cent fossil-free fuel.” Toyota describes the fuel as a blend using synthetic and biofuel components and says it was the first of its kind used in an FIA motorsport world championship. That establishes the fuel’s stated composition and the championship’s direction; it does not establish a measured lifecycle emissions reduction for the fuel, an individual car or the WRC as a whole. The official material cited here gives no quantified total-emissions comparison. The FIA’s season overview and Toyota’s car page describe the fuel.
The FIA framed hybrid power, fossil-free fuel and sustainable energy supplies as steps toward a greener future. That is the championship’s stated aim, not evidence that WRC became carbon neutral or that its overall emissions fell by a particular amount.

How did the cars address safety?
Rally1 introduced an upgraded safety-cell chassis, with hybrid components housed in a reinforced structure. The FIA said the design could reduce accident intrusion by up to 50 per cent. That is an FIA claim about the design’s potential, not a guarantee for every crash. The FIA’s 2022 overview outlines the safety structure.
Toyota says the GR Yaris Rally1 used a spaceframe chassis, replacing the previous generation’s bodyshell structure. Its technical summary also lists four-wheel drive, a simplified five-speed mechanical-shift gearbox and no active centre differential. These are Toyota’s specifications for its car and should not be assumed to describe every Rally1 model in identical detail. The FIA appointed Compact Dynamics as exclusive supplier of Rally1 hybrid equipment under a three-year agreement running from 2022 through 2024, saying a single supplier was intended to support cost efficiency, sporting equity and safety. Toyota’s technical page and the FIA’s supplier announcement provide those details.

Which cars and manufacturers competed in Rally1?
The three manufacturers brought new cars to the 2022 top class. Their models shared the Rally1 hybrid framework, but the official material cited here does not establish measured environmental differences between them.
| Manufacturer | 2022 Rally1 car | What the cited official material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Gazoo Racing | GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid | Toyota calls it a new car designed for the 2022 Rally1 regulations, developed with lessons from the Yaris WRC. Its own technical page details the hybrid output and chassis features. Toyota Gazoo Racing |
| Hyundai | i20 N Rally1 | The FIA identifies Hyundai as a Rally1 manufacturer and refers to the i20 N Rally1 in its Monte Carlo report. FIA Monte Carlo report |
| M-Sport Ford | Puma Rally1 | The FIA identifies M-Sport Ford as a manufacturer and the Puma Rally1 as its car in the same event report. FIA Monte Carlo report |
All three manufacturers’ new cars were unveiled at the January 2022 season launch. The FIA said that season comprised 13 rounds across four continents. The FIA’s season-launch report gives that context.

What did drivers and teams say at the start?
During the opening Rallye Monte-Carlo event, M-Sport Ford driver Sébastien Loeb described the hybrid boost: “It was a lot of power. You can really enjoy it in the exit of slow corners and when you don’t have it, you understand how much it gives you an extra boost.” Toyota Gazoo Racing driver Sébastien Ogier said: “Our teams have done a fantastic job building completely new cars that are completely different from the other ones.” Team founder Akio Toyoda called the car “an electrified car following the new regulations to make this sport more sustainable.” These are event-opening reactions, not independent measurements of performance or environmental impact. The FIA’s Monte Carlo report contains the comments.
That report also said M-Sport Ford driver Adrien Fourmaux and co-driver Alexandre Coria emerged uninjured after their Puma Rally1 crashed and rolled down a ravine. Fourmaux called the safety cell “a really good improvement,” and team principal Richard Millener said the safety cell remained in place. It is one reported crash, not statistical proof of overall safety performance. The FIA’s event report describes the incident.
