McMurtry Automotive’s electric Spéirling PURE used underbody fans to set two manufacturer-reported records at Laguna Seca’s Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb in 2024: 28.6 seconds on the long layout and 21.958 seconds on a newly introduced short layout. The short-course time is a separate record, not a direct comparison with the previous long-layout mark of 34.69 seconds.
What records did the McMurtry Spéirling set?
McMurtry’s record archive says driver Max Chilton recorded 28.6 seconds on the Laguna Seca Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb’s long layout on August 11, 2024. The archive identifies the previous long-layout mark as 34.69 seconds, set by a Lotus Type 77. That is a 6.09-second difference between the two reported times.
The same event introduced a shorter layout, on which the Spéirling recorded 21.958 seconds. Because that configuration is shorter, its time should not be presented as a head-to-head improvement over the old long-layout record. The hillclimb runs turns 11, 10, and 9, followed by the Corkscrew in reverse to the circuit’s normal racing direction. McMurtry’s record archive is the source for the driver, date, course descriptions, and times; the figures are manufacturer-reported, with no independent verification identified in the reviewed sources.
How does a fan car make downforce?
Conventional aerodynamic downforce generally grows with vehicle speed. A fan car instead uses fans to draw air from beneath the car, helping create a low-pressure region under the floor and press the vehicle toward the track. That approach can generate grip at low speeds, where wings and other speed-dependent aerodynamic devices have less airflow to work with.

McMurtry calls its system Downforce-on-Demand and says it can generate downforce from a standing start. The company lists the Spéirling PURE’s fans at 23,000 rpm and claims up to 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) of downforce. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured figures in the available source set. McMurtry’s Spéirling PURE page describes the current product and its claimed specifications.
What are the Spéirling PURE’s published specifications?
McMurtry describes the Spéirling PURE as a track car, not a road-going hypercar. The figures below are specifications published by the manufacturer; mass is approximate and subject to options.

Its defining feature is not simply its power output, but its fan-generated grip at low speed. A conventional high-downforce car relies heavily on speed to push air over its wings and bodywork. The Spéirling’s fans are intended to provide downforce even when the car is moving slowly, potentially helping it carry speed through slower corners and brake later. The precise performance benefit depends on conditions and has not been independently quantified in the reviewed sources.

McMurtry’s product page quotes former F1 driver John Marshall Watson, MBE, describing how the car behaved in mid- and low-speed corners. That is an attributed personal assessment published by the manufacturer, not an independent test result. Likewise, managing director Thomas Yates’s description of fans as the ideal way to make a car reflects the company’s view of its design.

How should the record claims be interpreted?
- Keep the layouts separate. The 28.6-second figure is for the long layout; 21.958 seconds is for a newly introduced short layout.
- Include the event and driver. These figures refer to the 2024 Laguna Seca Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb, with Max Chilton driving, according to McMurtry’s archive.
- Attribute the claims. The archive is the primary source for the times and comparison with the Lotus Type 77, but the reviewed sources do not provide independent verification.
- Do not generalize the result. These are times for a particular hillclimb course configuration, not a claim that the car holds every Laguna Seca record or is the quickest car at every circuit.
