Infiniti said the prototype could produce 563 hp—up from 400 hp for the conventional engine—and reach 100 km/h in under four seconds. Those were manufacturer claims for a prototype, not independently verified test results or specifications for a production Q60.
What was Project Black S?
Project Black S began in 2017 as an exploration of a possible high-performance Infiniti model line. At that stage, the F1-inspired performance-hybrid system did not exist in a current road car. In 2018, Infiniti presented a working engineering prototype developed with the Renault Sport Formula One Team.
Infiniti described the car as a test-bed for ideas and technologies, not a retail model. The project’s aim was to explore how the brand’s motorsport partnership and energy-recovery technology might translate into a road-car concept.
How the F1-inspired energy recovery system worked
The prototype combined the Q60-based car’s 3.0-liter VR30 twin-turbo V6 with three motor-generator units (MGUs). Infiniti’s 2018 announcement described a dual-hybrid energy recovery system that collected energy in two ways:

- One MGU-K: recovered kinetic energy during braking.
- Two MGU-H units: recovered energy associated with exhaust heat.
The system was designed to recycle that captured energy and redeploy it to add power and torque. In other words, the F1 connection was not simply a more powerful engine: it was the combination of the V6 and an energy-recovery system intended to supplement its output.
How much power did Infiniti claim?
In its 2018 technical announcement, Infiniti/Nissan said the complete prototype powertrain produced 420 kW (563 hp, or 571 PS). The same announcement listed the conventional VR30 engine at 298 kW (400 hp, or 405 PS).

Infiniti also claimed a 0–100 km/h time of under four seconds for the prototype. The figures describe what the manufacturer announced; the official materials cited here do not provide an independent measurement or road-test verification.

Why do Infiniti’s pages give different horsepower figures?
Infiniti Canada’s concept page currently lists 536 horsepower for the car’s V6, while Infiniti/Nissan’s 2018 announcement gives 563 hp for the complete prototype powertrain. These are different official-page claims, and the Canada page does not explain the discrepancy. The available information does not establish a reason to reconcile them, so they should not be treated as interchangeable figures.

The official descriptions characterize Project Black S as a design exploration and engineering prototype. They do not establish that a production version went on sale, that the system was fitted to a consumer Q60, or that concept-specific energy-recovery parts were offered to buyers.
Former Infiniti president Roland Krueger called the prototype a “test-bed for new ideas and technologies” developed through collaboration with the Renault Sport Formula One Team. Infiniti vice president Francois Bancon described its dual-hybrid system as harvesting heat and kinetic energy. Both statements present the project as experimental; they are manufacturer comments, not independent evaluations of its performance.
