CEO Nick Collins said in August 2025 that the company was reducing output to protect residual values; in September 2026, McLaren formally announced a performance SUV and a £500 million UK investment programme. The SUV was not confirmed in Collins’s earlier interview.
Why did McLaren say it was cutting production?
In an interview published by Car and Driver on 17 August 2025, McLaren CEO Nick Collins said the company was reducing production from 3,000 cars in 2024 to 2,000 in 2025. He explained the move as a way to avoid supply exceeding demand and to support residual values. These are figures and a rationale attributed to Collins; the interview does not independently verify the production totals.
Collins described the reduction as a stabilising step, not a permanent ceiling: “It’s not that we’re going to stay static at that level,” he said, adding, “we want to get stable and then grow.” The stated sequence was to stabilise first, then pursue growth.
What did McLaren mean by a stronger design focus?
Collins said McLaren needed to make design a greater priority and argued that its contemporary mid-engine supercars did not differentiate themselves enough. He described the intended customer experience as: “More design, more technology, more quality, more attribute integrity, and a more rounded elevated experience.” These were his stated priorities in the 2025 interview, not specifications for a particular future model.

That emphasis also featured in McLaren’s later identity announcement. On 22 September 2026, Chief Creative Officer David Woodhouse said: “There is something uniquely special about McLaren. Throughout our history, we’ve never been content to follow established paths. We’ve always looked ahead, driven by a restless desire to innovate, create and push beyond expectations.” The announcement used the M6GT and McL 6GT to evoke the brand’s heritage and design direction; the McL 6GT was presented as a concept, not a confirmed production car.
Is McLaren making an SUV?
Yes. McLaren Automotive announced a performance SUV on 18 September 2026, describing it as part of its next generation of cars built in Britain. The company’s investment announcement and its 22 September identity announcement confirm the category. This came after Collins’s August 2025 comments that McLaren needed to expand beyond two-seat models; he did not identify an SUV in that interview.

McLaren has not specified the SUV’s seating layout, dimensions, powertrain, price, release date or production volume in these announcements. A performance SUV is confirmed; those details are not.
What does the £500 million UK investment include?
McLaren Automotive said on 18 September 2026 that its £500 million programme, part of a larger commitment by shareholder L’IMAD, would expand UK manufacturing, engineering and operations. The announcement describes planned capabilities, not completed facilities.

- Expanded operations at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking and the company’s carbon-fibre facility in South Yorkshire.
- In-house development and manufacture of two new engines and transmissions, which McLaren says will support its hybrid strategy.
The announcement gives no specifications for the engines or transmissions and no detailed schedule for the facilities. McLaren forecast at least 1,000 new direct and indirect UK jobs by 2032, plus up to 3,000 additional jobs across the supply chain. Those are company projections, not realised job totals.

McLaren’s stated aim is to grow beyond a supercar-only range while keeping the supercar at its centre. Its 2025 focus on supply discipline and differentiation therefore sits alongside—not in place of—the 2026 plan to add capacity and enter a new category. How those priorities translate into output, product positioning and the final model mix remains unspecified.
