McLaren W1 Arctic Winter Test: What Its 1,258-bhp Hybrid Was Put Through

McLaren says W1 prototypes faced Arctic winter testing, with engineers checking the hybrid powertrain, cooling vents and control systems on low-grip surfaces. It has not published quantified snow-performance results.

McLaren says it tested W1 prototypes in Arctic winter conditions, focusing on powertrain operation, cooling-system vents and driver-control systems on low-grip surfaces. The company has not published measured snow-performance results, so “slays the snow” is colorful headline language—not a demonstrated record or independent verdict.

What did McLaren test in the Arctic?

McLaren’s account describes prototype validation in sub-zero conditions, rather than a timed snow-driving test. Engineers stressed the engine, gearbox, hybrid battery and electric motor, and checked how compacted snow and ice affected the cooling-system vents. McLaren’s account of the W1’s Arctic winter testing does not give a test date, named facility or ambient temperature.

The cold-weather work also addressed how the W1 puts power down when grip is limited. McLaren says its engineers worked on torque delivery, traction control, stability control (ESP) and ABS. Lead Test Driver Dani Marcos described the challenge: “We’re talking about a car with 1275PS, so to give traction in low-grip conditions is a big challenge.”

How much power does the McLaren W1 make?

McLaren lists combined output as 1,275 PS, equivalent to 1,258 bhp. The W1 is a hybrid, not an all-electric car: its powertrain pairs a 4.0-liter, 90-degree twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor. McLaren also lists an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and maximum torque of 1,340 Nm (988 lb-ft). These are manufacturer specifications; they do not describe power measured during the Arctic tests. McLaren’s W1 specifications do not state a publication year for these figures.

What performance figures has McLaren published?

McLaren gives a 0–100 km/h time of 2.7 seconds, a 0–200 km/h time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). Those are manufacturer-stated vehicle figures, not results from snow or ice testing. The Arctic account does not report a snow lap time, braking distance or other quantified low-grip result.

What the winter test does—and does not—show

McLaren Chief Engineer Andy Beale said that “proving the performance and calibrating for these conditions is an important part of our testing.” That describes the purpose of the work: checking how the prototype and its control systems behave in cold and low-grip conditions, and adjusting them accordingly. The company’s account does not establish how the W1 compares with other cars on snow or how it would perform in a specific driver’s winter conditions.
