The fundamental difference is drivetrain layout. McLaren’s W1 uses a rear-wheel-drive hybrid system built around a 4.0-litre V8, an E-module, a compact battery and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with an integrated E-Differential. Ferrari’s F80 combines a 2,992 cc, 120-degree V6 with a rear MGU-K and two separate electric motors on the front axle. That gives the Ferrari electric assistance at both axles, while the W1 keeps its published hybrid drive at the rear.
Both cars are performance-first hybrids rather than electric grand tourers. McLaren officially quotes less than 2 km of electric range for the W1. Ferrari’s technical sheet provides unusually specific electrical data, including battery voltage, energy capacity and motor ratings; McLaren’s public overview uses the term “E-module” and identifies F1-derived battery technology but does not publish equivalent standalone figures.

The architecture in one view
The W1 and F80 both use electrification to support a high-output internal-combustion engine, but they solve the packaging and traction problem differently. The W1 is a rear-drive hybrid: its combustion engine and electric assistance feed the rear axle through a transmission that incorporates an E-Differential. The F80 adds a dedicated electric drive unit to each front wheel area while retaining a rear electric motor connected to the combustion-engine drivetrain.

How the McLaren W1 hybrid system works
V8 power with a compact electric module
McLaren calls the combustion engine the MHP-8 and describes the hybrid package as a “McLaren High-Performance Hybrid Powertrain.” Its named elements are the new V8, a lighter E-module, F1-derived battery technology and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The E-module is McLaren’s terminology; it should not automatically be treated as the same component as Ferrari’s MGU-K.
Because the W1 is rear-wheel drive, the published architecture places propulsion at the rear axle. The electric machine is therefore contributing to the same driven axle as the V8 rather than powering the front wheels. That arrangement can keep the front axle mechanically simpler and preserves a conventional rear-drive balance, but it does not provide the electrically driven front-axle capability specified for the F80.
Transmission and E-Differential
The W1’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission includes an integrated E-Differential. McLaren presents that as part of the powertrain rather than as a separate add-on. In practical engineering terms, the differential is the device that manages torque distribution between the two rear wheels while the transmission handles the engine and electric drive connection. The manufacturer’s published description does not provide a separate E-module power rating or a detailed torque-blending map.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the battery disclosure does—and does not—tell you
McLaren identifies F1-derived battery technology, signaling a focus on low mass and high power delivery. Its cited public overview does not state the pack’s energy capacity, maximum voltage or standalone E-module output. That is a disclosure limit, not evidence that those specifications do not exist. It also means the W1 cannot be compared fairly with the F80 on battery size or motor power using the available manufacturer summaries alone.
Why the W1’s electric range is so short
McLaren lists less than 2 km of electric range. That figure frames the system as a short-duration performance assist and low-speed maneuvering capability rather than a plug-in-style electric driving mode for ordinary journeys. The cited W1 information does not establish that the car is a plug-in hybrid, so the range figure should not be interpreted as evidence of external charging hardware or a long-distance EV operating strategy.
How the Ferrari F80 hybrid system works
Rear MGU-K plus two front motors
Ferrari’s technical sheet describes three traction motors: a rear MGU-K and two electric motors mounted on the front axle. The rear unit works with the V6-powered rear drivetrain. The two front machines give the F80 electrically driven front wheels, allowing the hybrid system to influence both axles without a mechanical propeller shaft connecting the front and rear.

This is the defining architectural contrast with the W1. Ferrari can use software-controlled front-axle torque as part of its all-wheel-drive strategy, while the W1’s published system remains rear-wheel drive. The front motors also allow Ferrari to vary left and right front-wheel torque independently in ways a single rear electric machine cannot reproduce at the front axle.

Ferrari’s published electrical figures
The F80 technical sheet gives a maximum battery voltage of 860 V and energy capacity of 2.28 kWh. It rates each front electric motor at 105 kW peak power. The rear MGU-K is listed at 60 kW peak for internal-combustion-engine assistance and 70 kW peak for regenerative braking.
Those separate ratings need careful reading. The 60 kW and 70 kW figures describe different operating functions of the rear unit, not two independent motors. Likewise, the front-motor ratings are component figures; they should not be added mechanically to the car’s headline output without knowing Ferrari’s approved measurement method, operating conditions and any system-level limits.
What the front axle changes
Electric front drive gives Ferrari a second propulsion path and enables torque control at the front axle without adding a conventional driveshaft. During acceleration, the front motors can supplement rear-axle drive. During cornering or regeneration, their independent control can help manage how torque is distributed across the front wheels. The exact control algorithms and intervention thresholds are not published in the cited documents, so claims about specific handling behavior would go beyond the available evidence.
Ferrari’s electric turbo technology is a separate system
Ferrari’s launch document also describes electric turbo technology, or e-turbo. It says an electric motor is installed between the turbine and compressor of each turbo. The purpose Ferrari identifies is faster response from low engine speed and higher specific power.
These turbo motors are not the F80’s traction motors. The two front-axle machines and the rear MGU-K propel or regenerate through the wheels; the e-turbo motors spin the turbocharger assemblies. Treating all of them as one pool of “electric motors” obscures how the car actually works. The turbo motors address boost response, while the traction motors address wheel torque and energy recovery.

The reviewed McLaren overview does not make a comparable electric-turbo claim. That does not prove the W1 lacks any particular turbocharger feature; it means McLaren’s cited public description does not establish one.
Battery strategy: high power versus disclosed capacity
Why capacity is not the whole story
A hybrid battery’s energy capacity indicates how much electrical energy it can store, but a high-performance system also depends on power capability, cooling, voltage, inverter limits and how aggressively the control software charges and discharges the pack. Ferrari publishes both voltage and capacity for the F80, giving readers a concrete electrical baseline. McLaren instead highlights F1-derived technology and a lighter E-module without publishing matching pack figures in the overview used here.
The F80’s 860 V maximum is a voltage specification, not a statement that the battery operates at that level under every condition. Its 2.28 kWh figure is energy capacity, not electric range. Range depends on vehicle load, speed, temperature, control strategy and how much energy is reserved for boost and regeneration.

Why the W1’s range should not be compared as an EV claim
The W1’s less-than-2-km figure is best understood in the context of a lightweight performance hybrid. A small usable energy reserve can deliver strong short bursts when paired with a powerful engine, even though it cannot sustain long electric travel. The published figure therefore says more about the intended duty cycle than about the system’s ability to replace the V8 for everyday driving.
Motor placement and the driving problem each car prioritizes
W1: rear-drive integration
The W1 concentrates its hybrid hardware around the rear powertrain. The E-module, dual-clutch transmission and E-Differential form one rear-drive system. This can simplify the distinction between engine torque and electric torque for the driver: both arrive at the rear axle, and the transmission and differential coordinate delivery there. The trade-off is that the front axle has no published electric propulsion motor.
F80: electrically assisted front axle
The F80 distributes its traction hardware across the car. The rear MGU-K works with the V6, while the two front motors create an electrically driven front axle. This adds control possibilities and hardware at the front, including inverters, cooling and high-voltage connections, but it also gives Ferrari a way to apply electric torque where the W1’s published architecture does not.

McLaren publishes a vehicle-level maximum of 1,275 PS and 1,340 Nm for the W1. Ferrari’s cited technical sheet supplies component-level motor ratings but does not provide a directly matching total-output figure in the material used here.
That makes a direct headline-output ranking inappropriate. PS and kW are different units, and a component’s peak rating does not necessarily occur at the same time as the engine’s peak output. A valid comparison would require both manufacturers to publish total system power using the same test basis, unit convention and operating conditions.
The useful conclusion is architectural rather than numerical: McLaren tells you the W1’s total system result, while Ferrari gives more detail about how individual electrical components contribute. The two disclosures answer different questions.

W1 rear-axle energy flow
With a rear-drive E-module and an integrated E-Differential, the W1’s available electric assistance and regenerative braking are organized around the rear drivetrain. The published material does not specify separate regeneration power, front-axle recovery or a battery operating window. Any more detailed sequence would be an inference rather than a manufacturer-stated procedure.
F80 multi-motor energy flow
Ferrari explicitly assigns the rear MGU-K a different peak rating for engine assistance and regenerative braking. The front motors add another potential recovery path at the front axle, although the cited technical sheet does not describe the exact brake-blending strategy or front-motor regeneration limits.

Which hybrid concept is better suited to which goal?
If the priority is rear-drive purity
The W1’s architecture is the clearer fit. Its published system keeps propulsion at the rear and integrates the E-module with the dual-clutch transmission and E-Differential. The short electric range reinforces that the battery is there for performance support rather than electric touring.

The F80 is the more explicit choice. Its two front motors and rear MGU-K give Ferrari three named traction motors distributed across both axles. That arrangement offers a broader set of torque-control possibilities, although the added hardware also creates more components to package and manage thermally.
If the priority is transparent electrical specifications
The F80 has the advantage in the published material. Ferrari provides voltage, capacity and individual motor ratings. McLaren provides a total vehicle output, a range figure and a description of the E-module and battery technology, but not equivalent component data.
Common mistakes when reading the comparison
- Calling the W1 a plug-in hybrid: the cited information gives an electric-range figure but does not establish external charging capability.
- Equating the E-module with the MGU-K: those are manufacturer-specific names, and the published architectures are not identical.
- Counting Ferrari’s e-turbo motors as traction motors: they spin the turbochargers; they are separate from the front motors and rear MGU-K.
- Adding every published motor rating to get system power: peak component outputs may occur under different conditions and cannot replace a like-for-like system figure.
- Inferring missing McLaren specifications: the absence of a battery-capacity or E-module-output figure in the overview is a disclosure gap, not proof that the hardware lacks that capability.
- Turning manufacturer figures into road-test claims: the published numbers are specifications. They do not establish real-world efficiency, reliability, acceleration feel or durability.
Bottom line: two different definitions of a hybrid supercar
The McLaren W1 uses electrification to sharpen a rear-wheel-drive V8 package: a lighter E-module, F1-derived battery technology and an integrated E-Differential support the rear drivetrain, with less than 2 km of quoted electric range. Ferrari’s F80 takes a more distributed approach, combining a V6 and rear MGU-K with two front-axle motors, while also adding electric turbochargers for boost response.
So the key distinction is not simply engine size or a headline power number. It is where the electric machines work. The W1’s published hybrid system is rear-drive and tightly integrated with its transmission; the F80’s system adds electrically driven front wheels and publishes a fuller set of battery and motor specifications. Those choices lead to different engineering priorities, even though both cars use hybridization primarily to enhance supercar performance rather than to provide long electric journeys.
