A 2020 McLaren 570S Spider can be both thrilling and unexpectedly easy to tour in, Aaron Turpen found during several days with the car. In his August 24, 2020 New Atlas review, he praised its responsive V8 and composed freeway ride, while noting a cramped cockpit and the attention that followed it wherever he stopped. His account is a review of one Spider, not a current specification sheet or a promise of what every 570S owner will experience.
What car did the review cover?
Turpen drove a 2020 McLaren 570S Spider, the open-top version of the mid-engined, two-seat sports car. The test car had an electrically actuated hard-top roof; its rear glass could be raised or lowered independently. The review also notes that a Coupe version was available, but it does not offer a direct comparison of the two body styles.
The article describes a carbon-fiber structure and a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8. It reports 562 horsepower, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an approximate weight of 3,313 pounds (1,503 kg). These are figures reported in the 2020 review, not independently verified current specifications.
How does the 570S feel to drive?
Turpen’s central impression was that the car paired sharp responses with a more forgiving ride than its exotic appearance might suggest. He called it “a dream to drive,” and described it as “at once responsive and continually engaging” while also comfortable and good at touring. Those are the reviewer’s assessments of his test car, not measured ratings.

Power and acceleration
The reviewer found the V8’s power readily accessible through the dual-clutch transmission. In his reported 0–60 mph attempts, the car took 3.8 seconds when the transmission shifted automatically. His attempts to shift manually with the paddles took 4.4 seconds. These are his results, not controlled independent test figures. The article also says McLaren listed a time of about three seconds; that manufacturer figure is relayed secondhand in the review and was not independently checked.
Modes and handling
In Turpen’s account, the test car let the driver adjust handling and powertrain behavior separately, with Normal, Sport and Track settings. Separate selectors meant he could choose a handling setting without tying it to the engine and transmission setting. The review describes the controls and driving impressions but does not provide instrumented measurements or a rival-car comparison.

Can you tour in a 570S Spider?
Turpen found the freeway ride smooth enough to make the car usable for touring, rather than merely a short, intense drive. The Spider’s retractable roof and independently adjustable rear glass offered ways to change the open-air experience, though the review does not quantify wind noise or compare comfort with the Coupe.
Practical luggage space is limited by the car’s compact layout. The reviewer says the front trunk held a couple of carry-on bags and the roadside kit supplied with his test car. That is an observation about this example, not a stated capacity specification.

What are the drawbacks of living with it?
Low seating and a tight cabin
The low, small cockpit required moderate limberness to get into, and Turpen eventually felt the familiar cramping associated with a compact sports-car cabin. The review does not describe the experience of other drivers or passengers, so prospective owners should treat cabin fit as personal and, if possible, try entry and seating position themselves.
Attention in public
The car drew crowds at stops, and Turpen says people followed it. He found that attention wore thin. This is his experience during the review, not evidence that every 570S attracts the same response or that attention is a predictable ownership cost.

Equipment details are specific to the test car
The reviewed car had McLaren’s Iris infotainment system, which Turpen characterized as relatively simple, and a Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker audio system. The article does not establish that these options or equipment details apply to every 570S. It also mentions a battery-maintenance connection without identifying a charger model or compatibility requirements.

Who is this 570S review most useful for?
Turpen’s account is most useful to someone weighing the experience of an exotic two-seat Spider: its reported blend of acceleration, responsive handling and touring comfort against a tight cabin and conspicuous presence. It does not establish how the 570S compares with a named competitor, what a particular used example is worth, or the specifications of a car offered for sale today. For those decisions, confirm the specific car’s equipment, condition and current documentation rather than relying on a single 2020 test-drive account.
