Mazda’s Iconic SP is a compact sports-car concept that pairs a two-rotor rotary engine with electric drive: the engine generates electricity rather than being described as directly driving the wheels. Unveiled in October 2023, it brings Mazda’s rotary heritage into an electrified design study. Its published figures are concept specifications, and Mazda has not confirmed a production model or launch date in the sources cited here.
What is the Mazda Iconic SP?
Mazda unveiled the Iconic SP on 25 October 2023 at Japan Mobility Show 2023 as a compact sports-car concept. The company presents it as a vision for an electrified era that carries forward its “joy of driving” identity and rotary-engine heritage. Calling the design timeless or saying it “transcends time” is an aesthetic interpretation, not a technical claim.
Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro called it “An iconic model that exemplifies our commitment to the future.” The concept also received the EV Concept of the Year award at the 2024 Top Gear Electric Awards, as reported by Mazda UK. That recognition is for the concept; it does not establish production approval.
How does the Iconic SP rotary-EV system work?
Mazda describes a two-rotor rotary EV system in which the rotary engine generates electricity. The company says the compact engine gives the vehicle layout flexibility; it associates the engine’s central placement with a low hood and says the concept has around 50:50 weight distribution. Mazda does not describe the rotary engine as directly driving the wheels in the cited materials.

Mazda says the engine can burn various fuels, including hydrogen. Its statement that driving could be “virtually carbon-neutral” is conditional: the battery must be charged using electricity derived from renewable energy, and the engine must use carbon-neutral fuel. This is Mazda’s description of a potential operating scenario, not independent lifecycle evidence that the vehicle is carbon-neutral in every use case. How much power, range and size does Mazda list?
Mazda’s October 2023 announcement published the following concept specifications. They are manufacturer figures, not independent test results.

A later figure appears in Mazda’s March 2025 investor briefing: an electric-drive range of 200 km. That is Mazda’s stated range for the concept in that briefing, not a certified or independently tested production-car range. It is separate from the 2023 specification list. What stands out about the design?
The concept’s proportions are shaped around a low hood and compact powertrain. Mazda presents its Viola Red body color as an intentional expression of the company’s interest in red. In its editorial feature, the company also describes interior detailing made with Bio Weave, using plant-derived fibers and dyes, alongside materials made from oyster shells, which Mazda identifies as a Hiroshima specialty. The concept’s appeal lies partly in that mix of continuity and change: a rotary engine remains central to the idea, but its role is to generate electricity in an EV system. The phrase “transcends time” captures that design reading; it should not be mistaken for a claim about performance, range or production plans.

The sources cited here do not confirm that the Iconic SP will enter production or give it a launch date. Mazda design general manager Masashi Nakayama said the concept “is not just one of those empty show cars” and that it “has been designed with real intent to turn it into a production model in the not-so-distant future.” That describes design intent, not a confirmed decision, timetable or production specification. The award and the published concept figures likewise do not establish that it will be sold.

For context, Mazda UK reported that Top Gear Associate Editor Tom Ford called it “Among a slew of new electric car concepts, it is the one we want to see make production as it is.” That is praise for the concept, not an announcement from Mazda. Mazda UK’s award announcement reports the recognition.
