Mazda launched it in North America for the 2007 model year, and its blend of everyday packaging and serious performance equipment still makes it worth a closer look.
What the Mazdaspeed3 was
Mazda introduced the Mazdaspeed3 for the 2007 model year as the performance flagship of its Mazda3 range. It kept the five-door hatchback body but added a 2.3-liter direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) turbo engine rated by Mazda at 263 horsepower. That combination is the heart of its appeal: it was not a stripped-down track special, but a compact hatch designed to carry passengers and cargo while delivering substantially more power than an ordinary economy-focused Mazda3.
The name varied by market. Mazda identified the Japanese-market Mazdaspeed Axela as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America and the Mazda3 MPS in several other regions, including Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Mazda’s June 2006 announcement also confirmed the related model’s 2.3-liter direct-injection turbo engine.
Mazdaspeed3 specifications and factory performance claims
Mazda’s 2010 U.S. fact sheet lists the core powertrain and front-drive equipment. The specifications show a car built around more than a turbocharged engine alone: a six-speed manual and a torque-sensing conical limited-slip front differential were part of the package, alongside Mazda’s Advanced Torque Management System.

The figures in the table come from Mazda’s U.S. materials: its 2007 model release and 2010 fact sheet. The available specifications do not establish that every listed detail was unchanged across every intervening model year.
For the 2007 car, Mazda claimed zero to 60 mph in under six seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Those are manufacturer-published claims, not independent test results; they describe how Mazda positioned the car, not a guarantee of what a particular car will achieve.

Why the five-door format matters
The Mazdaspeed3’s performance story is inseparable from its hatchback body. The five-door layout gave it the practical shape of a compact family car, while the turbo engine and driver-focused hardware made it a much more serious performance proposition. Mazda’s 2009 release specifically described an air-to-air intercooler and independent sport suspension, evidence of factory engineering beyond a simple engine upgrade. Mazda’s 2009 release documents those features.
This pairing explains why the car remains distinctive: it offered useful hatchback packaging without giving up the enthusiast-oriented details of a manual gearbox, limited-slip differential, and turbocharged power. The result was a performance compact with a broad everyday brief rather than a two-seat or narrowly focused sports car.

Why it deserves a second look
The case for the Mazdaspeed3 is not that it has been proven superior to every rival. The available Mazda materials do not provide a rigorous period head-to-head comparison. Its more defensible distinction is the unusually direct combination of a five-door body, 263-hp factory turbo engine, six-speed manual, and front differential and torque-management equipment in one compact package.
Mazda’s launch message made the performance positioning explicit. In its September 2006 press release, Mazda3 program manager Tatsuo Maeda called it “a pure enthusiasts’ dream” and described it as a performance car for a buyer who wanted a lot without an enormous price. That is Mazda’s promotional language, but it captures the intended audience: drivers looking for practical packaging with factory-backed performance hardware.

What to check when considering a 2007 car
Recall 4607F applied to certain 2007 Mazdaspeed3s produced from June 28, 2006, through May 19, 2007. Mazda’s July 2007 owner notice said repeated sudden acceleration could loosen the No. 4 engine-mount bolt. If the problem continued, the bolt could fail and allow the transmission to move out of position; in extreme cases, a driveshaft could detach. The campaign does not automatically apply to every 2007 car, so check recall status by vehicle identification number rather than assuming coverage from the model year. The NHTSA-hosted recall notice gives the campaign details.
That documented recall is a specific safety issue, not a measure of overall reliability. The information available here does not establish a quantified reliability rating or a comprehensive list of common problems, so a blanket claim that the Mazdaspeed3 is either reliable or unreliable would go beyond the evidence.
