Mazda has not confirmed a production car named RX-9 in the official materials reviewed through October 8, 2026. The name remains speculation about a possible future rotary sports car. Mazda has unveiled rotary-powered concepts that help explain the interest, but none establishes an RX-9 launch, production approval, or final design.
Why do people expect a Mazda RX-9?
Mazda has a history of rotary-powered sports cars, and its concepts have kept the possibility of another one in view. The key distinction is that a concept can show a design direction or engineering idea without confirming a production model—or the name enthusiasts attach to it.
RX-VISION: a rotary sports-car concept
Unveiled in 2015, the RX-VISION was a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports-car concept powered by a next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine. Mazda described it as “a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality.” That statement expressed an aspiration for the concept, not a commitment to build an RX-9. ICONIC SP: a rotary engine used to generate power
Mazda unveiled the compact ICONIC SP sports-car concept in 2023. Its two-rotor rotary engine is part of a rotary EV system: it generates power for the batteries rather than serving as the concept’s conventional direct-drive engine. Mazda also described the system as able to use recyclable energy for charging and carbon-neutral fuel for the engine. The concept’s powertrain does not establish what an RX-9 would use. What do Mazda’s rotary production announcements establish?
Mazda said RX-8 production ended in 2012. In 2023, it announced that rotary vehicle production had resumed with the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV. These are useful milestones in Mazda’s rotary history, but the MX-30 is not an announcement of a rotary sports-car successor. Mazda’s rotary-engine history

Does the 2025 VISION X-COUPE confirm an RX-9?
No. Mazda presented the VISION X-COUPE in 2025 as a vision model with a plug-in hybrid system integrating a two-rotor rotary turbo engine, a motor, and a battery. The announcement does not call the vehicle an RX-9 or announce its production. It is evidence of another rotary-related concept direction, not confirmation of a sports-car model. How do the concepts differ?

|---|---|---|
| RX-VISION (2015) | Rotary-powered, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports-car concept. | Shows a conventional sports-car layout Mazda explored; Mazda did not identify it as an RX-9. |
| ICONIC SP (2023) | Compact sports-car concept with a two-rotor rotary EV system; the rotary engine generates power for the batteries. | Shows a different approach to rotary propulsion; Mazda did not announce it as a production RX-9. |
| VISION X-COUPE (2025) | Vision model with a plug-in hybrid system combining a two-rotor rotary turbo engine, motor, and battery. | Shows another rotary-related technology vision; Mazda did not call it an RX-9. |
