Mazda’s Forgotten 1990s Sport Compact: The MX-3 and Its Tiny V6

Mazda’s MX-3 paired compact 2+2 coupe packaging with an unusual small V6 option. Here’s what made it distinctive—and how its specifications varied by market.

The forgotten Mazda sport compact is the MX-3, a compact 2+2 coupe introduced in 1991. Its calling card was an unusually small mass-produced V6—but the MX-3 also came with a four-cylinder, and its specifications varied by market.

What was Mazda’s forgotten sport compact?

The MX-3 was a compact coupe with two front seats and a small rear seat. Mazda introduced it at the Geneva motor show in March 1991. It shared components with the Mazda 323, while Mazda presented its styling and sporty character as distinct. Mazda’s corporate history also identifies market-name variants: the Eunos Presso and Eunos 30X.

Mazda’s 2026 German-market retrospective quotes the image used in the car’s original 1991 press information: “Das Gesicht eines kleinen Sportwagens, der den Betrachter ansprang, samtpfotig wie ein junger Puma.” It describes the face of a small sports car springing at the viewer like a young puma. The original statement names no individual speaker. Mazda Deutschland’s retrospective gives the car’s history and German-market details.

What made the Mazda MX-3 unusual?

A V6 in a very small coupe

The MX-3’s most striking feature was its V6 option. Mazda says the German-market engine displaced 1,845 cc and produced 98 kW, or 133 PS, and describes it as the world’s smallest mass-produced V6 at the time. That distinction makes the car an unusual example of compact-car engineering; it does not mean every MX-3 had a V6 or that the engine made it superior to competing cars.

In North America, Automobile Magazine identifies the GS’s K8 as a 1,844 cc, 60-degree, double-overhead-cam V6 with 24 valves. Its published rating is 130 hp at 6,500 rpm and 115 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The account also notes Mazda’s Variable Resonance Induction System, or VRIS. These are North American figures; they should not be blended with Mazda’s German-market 133 PS rating. Automobile Magazine’s MX-3 retrospective covers the North American GS specification.

Not every MX-3 was a V6

Mazda’s German-market account identifies a 1.6-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder as the base engine. Automobile Magazine likewise says the North American base car used a 1.6-liter four. The engine choice is an important part of the model’s story: the V6 was its engineering headline, not a universal feature.

How did the MX-3 differ by market?

The available figures describe different market specifications and should be read in their own contexts.

Market and scope Engine detail Published output Other reported detail
Germany, as described in Mazda’s 2026 retrospective 1,845 cc V6; 1.6-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder base engine V6: 98 kW / 133 PS Mazda reports 7.1 L/100 km for the V6 at a constant 90 km/h; this is a specific constant-speed figure, not a general real-world consumption claim.
North America, as described by Automobile Magazine GS: 1,844 cc, 60-degree, DOHC, 24-valve K8 V6; base car: 1.6-liter four GS V6: 130 hp at 6,500 rpm and 115 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm V6 included Mazda’s Variable Resonance Induction System (VRIS).

These accounts do not provide a consistent, same-market comparison of four-cylinder and V6 trims, so they do not establish a direct performance or ownership comparison between the versions.

When was the Mazda MX-3 sold?

The endpoint depends on what the source is describing. Mazda says production continued until 1998 and reports around 20,000 MX-3 sales in Germany. That sales figure is specific to Germany, not a global total. Automobile Magazine describes the North American car as a 1992–1996 model and says the V6 ended there after model year 1994. Production dates and North American model years are different scopes, so they need not conflict.

What does the MX-3’s “ahead of its time” reputation mean?

The phrase is best understood as a judgment about the MX-3’s packaging and engineering ambition: Mazda put a V6 into a compact 2+2 coupe at a time when such a configuration was unusual enough for the manufacturer to claim a world-smallest distinction. The car also offered a more conventional four-cylinder version. That makes the MX-3 memorable as a specific kind of 1990s sport compact, not proof that it was the fastest, most reliable, or most advanced car in its class.

For anyone considering an older MX-3 today, the sources here establish the broad engine variants and market history, but not comparative reliability statistics, replacement-part numbers, or fitment for a particular service manual. A repair manual needs to match the car’s model year, market, and engine; verify that coverage in the listing before buying.
