Mazda’s Mobile Carbon Capture is an experimental onboard system that captures some CO₂ from engine exhaust. Mazda demonstrated it on a race car, not on a consumer vehicle: in June 2026 the automaker reported capturing 804 grams during a 24-hour race after adding equipment to release, compress and store the captured gas. That result is a racing demonstration, not proof that the system makes a car carbon-negative over its full lifecycle.
What is Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture?
It is an under-development system intended to capture CO₂ directly from a vehicle’s exhaust. Mazda announced the technology at Japan Mobility Show 2025 and tested it on the No. 55 MAZDA SPIRIT RACING 3 Future concept race car. The system is not identified in Mazda’s reviewed material as a consumer product or production-vehicle feature.
Mazda’s rationale is that engine exhaust has a higher CO₂ concentration than ambient air, making exhaust a potential capture point. At the 2025 show, CEO Masahiro Moro described the technology as one that “efficiently pulls CO₂ directly from exhaust.” The company has also suggested that captured CO₂ could be used to support crop growth or make high-performance carbon materials; Mazda has not said the race demonstration supplied CO₂ for either use.
How does the capture system work?
Mazda’s June 8, 2026 explanation describes a sequence of capture, release, compression and storage:

- Capture: Porous zeolite adsorbs CO₂ from the exhaust.
- Release: Heat releases the captured gas from the zeolite. In the June 2026 setup, exhaust heat supplied the heat for this desorption stage.
- Compress and store: An electric compressor moved the released CO₂ into a storage tank.
The November 2025 race test demonstrated adsorption, or capture, but did not yet use the later desorption-and-storage setup. Mazda said the integrated sequence was demonstrated as a complete system for the first time in the June 2026 test.
What did Mazda’s race tests demonstrate?

Mazda called the 804 g total approximately 9.6 times the earlier 84 g result. Because the hardware and test stages differed, that ratio is not a controlled, like-for-like measure of improved efficiency. Both figures are totals from their respective demonstrations, not a stated capture rate for ordinary driving.

Mazda also reported that the combined CO₂ reduction associated with HVO fuel and the system’s capture temporarily exceeded a target recovery level it assumes for typical production-vehicle use. The June 2026 release says the period was limited and that a full lifecycle carbon balance had not been established.
How is the system connected to the Vision X-Coupe?
MAZDA VISION X-COUPE is a future-vision model Mazda presented at Japan Mobility Show 2025. Its announced powertrain is a plug-in hybrid with a two-rotor rotary turbo engine, a motor and a battery. Mazda linked the concept to Mobile Carbon Capture and to carbon-neutral fuel derived from microalgae, proposing that the fuel’s carbon origin and exhaust capture could together reduce atmospheric CO₂ as the car is driven.

The race tests are separate from that concept-car framing. Mazda’s reported demonstrations used hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), not a demonstrated microalgae-derived fuel. The Vision X-Coupe is a concept, and the cited Mazda material does not identify a production version carrying this capture system.

Not on the evidence Mazda has published. Capturing exhaust CO₂ is one part of a vehicle’s emissions picture; a full lifecycle assessment would also need to account for factors such as fuel production and vehicle manufacture. Mazda’s June 2026 release explicitly states that “A full lifecycle carbon balance for the system has not yet been established.”

The 804 g figure is a limited-duration result from controlled endurance racing, not a verified net-negative result across a vehicle’s lifecycle or normal use. HVO’s lifecycle emissions can also depend on its feedstock and production pathway. Mazda says it plans further work on system efficiency and durability and to investigate driving scenarios beyond experimental vehicles.
Can you buy Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture?
Mazda’s cited announcements describe development and race-car demonstrations, not a consumer system. They provide no production launch date, retail price or compatible aftermarket parts. The Vision X-Coupe is likewise presented as a vision model, not as a vehicle available to buy.
